This is a well written story of Jane and the heartache she goes through after her parents die and she lives with her uncle & aunt - who treat her like a slave & there is physical abuse.. Being Amish and trying to live as God says - to honor your mother & father - no one in the family says anything to their Bishop and anyone else. There are a lot of references to the book "Jane Eyre" but this is what helps Jane become a strong woman.Her cousin and friend help her to realize she needs to get away and she travels to another Amish community to stay, at least for awhile. Luke loves Jane and has for years but finds himself attracted to another female when Jane leaves. And Jane is attracted to the grandson of the woman she is staying with. Lots of emotions and growing and learning to trust again.This is a book and not a short story. And a totally different type Amish book.

Plain Jane is a modern day retelling of Charlotte Bronte's classic novel,Jane Eyre, set in the amish comunities of western Pennsylvania and southwestern New York State. The author expertly comunicates the spiritual truths that healing comes only through forgiveness and both are processes that take time to complete. It is when we practice God's forgiveness towards those who hurt us, that we experience His healing for our damaged souls.

Love all of Karen Anna Vogel's books about the Amish community. I always learn something good whether it's recipes or life lessons!

Very well written story about love and forgiveness in Amish families.I love how the Amish help each other out,caring for individuals as well as the community.

That deals with abusive behavior that show how demeaning it is, how lives can be ruined by it but through the grace of God, healing can take place and relationships can be restored. Great book to read.

Another good one by Karen Vogel....more modern topics this time....child and spousal abuse....main them (I assume) is give it to God and learn to practice forgiveness.....

Karen brings us into the Amish world and reveals some of the struggles and blessings they face. Well written and kept my interest. It was a 2 day read!!

This book is somewhat based on Jane Eyre. There are a lot of references to that book and Charolette Bronte. Overall however this story is completely different. It was an enjoyable short read.

I have bought other yoga books before; but I'm SO glad I took a chance with this one! I am 66 now, but after years of hard farm work, schoolbus driving, I have found that I no longer want to do 'hard core' workouts, to stay active and fit. Parts of me hurt now and then, I am a semi regular chiropractor patient and I retired from schoolbus driving (30 years), with health issues of high blood pressure, and an overload of stress. I have run 5ks for a few years, now I'm not anxious to do even that. But I clean houses, walk a LOT, so I am active. But, the will and the want to, to do 'hard core' isn't there. I take tai chi for seniors, for falls prevention and balance. This led me to do qi gong dvds at home,,further research led me to chair yoga dvds. I can do yoga, but not much on the mat, my body doesn't like that sometimes. I wanted a yoga book, a gentle guide to keep me doing gentle(r) exercise, knowing I was on the right path. This book does that. I love the drawings, rather than the pictures of size 0 models I often see in other exercise books, or the bending into pretzels pictures I've seen in other yoga books. I really enjoy being told that I AM doing what my body/mind needs, and NOT to strive to do more.

This book is a gem!I have been teaching yoga for 17 years and am a yoga teacher trainer for both entry and advanced level yoga teachers. As such, I am always on the lookout for solidly researched, well-written books on yoga technique 1) to enhance my teaching skills and teach to other yoga teachers, and 2) to recommend to students for doing yoga at home when they can’t get to a yoga class. Relax Into Yoga for Seniors fits the bill on both counts.First, the layout of the book is comprehensive and approachable, beginning with basic information and guidelines on safety and the practical aspects of yoga, to laying out a 6-week progression of poses and actions that allow the student to gradually become more comfortable, strong, and flexible. Further, a huge plus is the book’s focus on making yoga accessible to all people, to all types of bodies. The book’s target audience is seniors, and it accomplishes that goal very well. However, most of its guidance could apply to the general population, anyone new to yoga, or anyone just wanting to take a more gentle approach to beginning yoga. Moreover, its guidance on yoga adaptations for such challenges as arthritis, osteoporosis, joint replacement, heart/lung/circulatory issues, chronic conditions, and cancer, all issues present in both our aging and general populations, along with as its illustrations of real people with real, less-than-perfect bodies, makes it highly accessible to a wide audience.In addition, the book is a treasure trove of additional resources. There are links in every chapter for downloading audio recordings to lead the reader through the breath work, meditations, and yoga postures presented in the book. The authors have even thought about yoga teachers and have provided a link to a guide for helping yoga teachers begin adjusting their instructions to safely and effectively work with aging populations.So, I shall be recommending this excellent book as a resource to yoga students, especially to gentle and extra gentle yoga students, to yoga students healing from trauma and stress, and to yoga teachers as a resource to enhance their teaching skills for teaching seniors and students with illnesses, injuries, and special conditions.Finally, I had the good fortune to study with the authors in 2011 at Duke Integrative Medicine’s Therapeutic Yoga for Seniors Professional Training (now Integrative Yoga for Seniors). Their knowledge and skill in adapting yoga to the needs of seniors, as well as their deep understanding of the yoga practice and ability to explain how to safely adapt the yoga came through in every class. This book represents their deep love of sharing yoga with all.

The poses are mostly just laying there, RELAXING. There is no way you can build strength from the poses in this book. It appears that the "majority" of the reviews are friends or acquaintances of the authors, who think the book is great but gives no reasoning for the book being great because it appears they didn't actually use the book, they just liked that it was a great concept.I am 61, with osteoporosis and I need to stretch and build up my muscles. At the end of the book there are some poses but most of the book is mostly about breathing and resting. It's laying and breathing or sitting and breathing. I realize that yoga teaches mindfulness but I wanted more. The book has pencil diagrams of people laying on the floor for instance, breathing to relax. The title says this was a program for Strength but not til I got to the end of the book, did I see a Bridge pose.

I've only read 1/3 of this book and I'm already more relaxed! The philosophy fits with the type of yoga I enjoy (no contortions, comfortable temperature) -- and everything is possible with a little searching for the right adaptation. Yoga for everyone, no matter your particular issues or (perceived) inabilities. (dealing with cancer? replacement parts? excess weight? Don't want to embarrass yourself or hold back a class?) The benefits of yoga are profound, and this book makes yoga available to us all. If you can breathe.... Im a female in my 70's who never even tried yoga until just a few years ago. Luckily my first teacher adopted the philosophy of this book. Read it!

My yoga partner and I wanted something to do that was easy for both of us. This book shows drawings of real people, you meet them and the end of the book, doing this yoga exercises. My partner is 77 and worried about the kinds of positions and poses she would be required to perform. This is a step by step way to stretch, breathe, and tone without becoming a pretzel. A great choice for ANY beginner~ age aside!

I really enjoyed Mr. Honda's book. I have been growing CPs for 15+ years, and own several books on the subject, and this volume is like a breath of fresh air. Although not a book on cultivation of these plants (of which there are already many), it offers a vivid peek into the natural habitats and life cycles of the different species. Beautiful close up & panoramic photographs will spark a fire in the heart in even the most jaded CPer, and the text is very well written...ranging from purely scientific to beautifully poetic. Very well done, I highly recommend it!

More of a documentation of them in the wild. The photos are wonderful in color, so I would invest in the color version instead of the black and white. These books too often go out of print quickly and are only available on the secondary market.

I really liked the pictures very much. The text was nice but I did not read very much which was new for me.

I have all their books - I recently received the large paperback as a gift. The Photograhy is just stunning. Some photos look like exotic seahorses, some look like alien off world plants with statures & colors that are literally out of this world!

this book was an amazeing read, Five stars! I would reccommend new readers look at it to learn how to raise these plants

About the Author

Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, MD, is a world-recognized medical doctor and spiritual teacher. He is the founder and director of the Tree of Life Foundation, which trains Essene priests and priestesses and coordinates international humanitarian programs benefiting disadvantaged families, children, and indigenous cultures through holistic education. Loved that Journal Me Organized has tons of idea pictures for both artsy and non artsy people. There are tons of great ideas and the book is layed out in logical sections. Lots of inspiration for those just starting in bullet journals or personal organization/artist journals. This book is where function and organization meets the artist in everyone.

Now this is REALLY a good book to purchase for creating your journal!! The author is a young woman with a great deal of creative talent. I was up late last night , just could not put it down, creating all of the unique planning styles for my daily journal. She includes “clip art” that you can use. They are so cute too, like the “garbage can” , which reminds me to put my trash can out on Wednesday nights, the box of popcorn 🍿 for 🎥 night. I can go on and on, but you must see it for yourselves.

First off, you might be like me and thinking "do I really need this book? I can find journaling/BuJo ideas all over Instagram/blogs/Pinterest/etc."And that's 100% true. You probably don't need this book, but here's why I recommend it anyway:1) You want to have a solid overview of some basic journaling workflows - this book is a great overview of various journaling styles, including bullet journaling, the Alastair method, etc and it's extremely helpful to flip through and have these all in one place.2) You interested in getting started, but have gotten way too much information overload from YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, etc - if so, I can definitely recommend this book. It has a wide variety of styles ranging from the simple to the complex but also gives a nice array of examples. I'll still be checking out YouTube/Skillshare for inspiration, but I like that this is something that I can come back to when I'd like to keep a collection of basic styles to reuse and elaborate on.3) You prefer a more minimalistic style, but don't mind getting the occasional burst of inspiration - this definitely is a good book for minimalists, and the author does a pretty good job of calling out the more bare-bones layouts. If you'd like a minimalist guideline w/o having to search through a ton of tutorials this is a great resource.The only minus against this book, in my opinion, is the sections on lettering/the index at the end of the book - the doodles are nice, but the lettering examples are pretty atrocious (or perhaps the author's style just isn't for me). But that's not really the point of the book so I don't count it against that. Overall a solid purchase that I'd recommend to anyone either who is getting started, or would just like a collection of ideas to reuse w/o having to scour the internet to find some simple layouts.

This has taken me out of my comfort zone, and into a world of creativity. I’m not artistic, but I do love everything to be beautiful. This book is full of ideas, and I have so much to learn, but I’m already diving in and planning our school year in my journal. Thank you, Rebecca!

What a great book!!! Such an easy read and so inspiring with all those pictures. I absolutely love her habit tracker and habit breaker page idea. What a great way to keep yourself accountable. I also love the brain dump page idea. I always have a million thoughts running through my head and this has really been helpful to write it down so that I know I won’t forget. I love that she shows you fun ways to get a little artistic with the journal rather than just boring writing. And those templates in the back are GREAT!!! Awesome job Rebecca. I will be recommending this book to all my friends.

Easy to understand and then put the advice into practice

I am a homeschool mom to 5 kids so naturally I have to be very organized and relaxed at the same time for our days to run smoothly. Rebecca introduces and teaches a whole new way of planning and journaling that incorporates functional lists and art using your own creative style. She writes it for the beginner to the expert planner, allowing each reader to embrace a new freedom in their planning and displays contemplative methods using art to organizing daily to do lists, weekly schedules, monthly events and even the whole year. I highly recomend this book, it is well worth the purchase and I know I will be using this book for years to come. I am so excited to finally create my own planner using my own creativity and inner artist to organize and journal our beautiful busy life!

This is amazing. My mother has dementia and forgets almost everything. When she gets overwhelmed looking at this book calms her. The pictures are amazing. My son likes to look at it too. I was going to take this to school for my students, but it didn’t get that far. I am keeping it at home to make my mom’s life more relaxing.

The book has beautiful pictures of all of the 59 U.S. national parks. Each park is briefly described. The pictures make me wish I had more vacation time to visit all of the locations!

Beautiful pictures and great information. Some of the cut-ins, words on pictures, should be moved or darken. They are hard to read in some places. Otherwise Beautiful picture book of the places and their food information.

I didn't know how things would play out, with the auction but it was strictly a business transaction that turned into something more. I was pleasantly surprised and actually found myself entertained. I would have finished this yesterday but with the time change messing with my head...I went to bed really early.I ended up giving props to Kiki, who didn't want the money. Tate wanted to give it to her but went about it the wrong way. And he paid for it. I thought it was very big of Kiki. She really showed us what a true, high class person should be. Even though she was uneducated she really shone her true colors. Which were very bright! I enjoyed the high stakes poker game. I loved how Tate thought he could inadvertently give Kiki her money. I thought that part of the story was genius. But unfortunately for Tate it backfired. Though the idea was still genius.I liked Kiki. I really liked Tate. They had a really good chemistry. I enjoyed their relationship and their interactions. This story was written well and the dialogue was really good.

Kiki arouses Tate's protective instincts, and he will go to any length to save her, even when she thinks she doesn’t need saving! Well-written, quick moving, entertaining story.

Mac, owner of Res, has always had it in for Tate and figures out a way to ruin him. First comes blackballing, then stealing employees and, finally, kidnapping! I have to say there was a lot of action and a lot of emotion in this story. Everything comes full circle and, in the end, they all get what they deserve. Surprising and fitting epilogue!

I was also a bit frustrated with Kiki, her pride, stubbornness and hate towards Tate was too much and if I was Tate, I would have left her after not hearing his side of the story. I did enjoy the beginning and the time they were togther, playing board games and getting to know each other, and how Tate could finally be himself and not put on a fake self.*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*

This version of Finney's Lectures was formatted for an easy read of a classic work.The writing itself was more holistic than I expected and his call to what normal Christianity is a challenge for those of us who live in easy believism. However, because he is writing as a reaction to extreme Calvinism of his time that was always "waiting on God" even when God is clearly working in the hearts of people, Finney errs the other direction, saying that people can do good and choose God, that God only gives us power to will it, which I don't find in scripture. Also, his expression of what purity in the Lord should look like is legalistic and culturally driven. But given that, it still challenges things in my life I had been excusing as acceptable to God, when they are really wasteful and indulgent and are distractions to those who are looking at my life to see if Christianity really has the power I say it does.This is a good read of pastors and lay leaders, not only for the historical knowledge of hearing his thoughts Finney's own words, it is also a good challenge for those in of a thought provoking challenge to the revitalize their spiritual life and ministry.

Don't let the picture on the cover scare you off. He was definitely anti alcohol, tobacco(smoking & chewing) and slavery. You will need to read his comment on tobacco juice on the church floor to get an amusing analogy.

I haven't read this yet - but understand (see William McLloughlin's "Modern Revivalism") that this Finney work is STILL USED by Revivalist IN the 21st Century for inspiration and guidelines. Finney wrote with work in the mid-19th Century.

That it is not. It is selected stories of the Bible. Either way, I would recommend the book to anyone with small kids.

This Bible is one of our favorites! My kids were begging for me to read it every night before bed during our reading time, and when we would stop, would beg me to keep reading. Even after finishing the book, my kids asked me if there was another one, like a follow up to this one. Since that is not the case, to my knowledge, we just started back from the beginning. Such cute illustrations, to the point of giggles for everyone, but the wording is very clear and easy for small children to comprehend. I love, love, love that these illustrations show people of a darker skin color, which seems truer to Bible times! Absolutely recommend this Bible!

I am so delighted with this Bible! The stories are as engaging for small children as they are for adults and the pictures are stunning. The 33 stories selected by the editors provide children with a great overview of the Bible and the Christian faith. I am most impressed by the fact that this Bible did not omit the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ as so many other children's Bibles have done. Some Biblical subjects may be more challenging than others to explain to small children, but Christ's death and resurrection are crucial aspects of our faith. I applaud the editors for including this information. In light of this, it's puzzling to note that the editors didn't explicitly discuss the concept of sin. Understanding sin is also incredibly important. Without the knowledge of what sin is, it removes some of the color and context from the stories. Nevertheless, this book is well done overall. It'll be in heavy rotation in our home for years to come! I received a copy of this Bible from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

We are thrilled with this Bible. The intentional inclusion of women in the stories, the portrayal of the people, and the way the stories are told has made this my favorite kid’s Bible.

I love it! Easy to read with my boys. Its great to have a Bible with diverse illustrations.

My 2 year old son loves this bible and I love that the stories always point to how much God loves him and all people. So good.

The Tiny Truths Illustrated Bible is a Zonderkidz (Zondervan's children's branch) storybook created by Joanna Rivard and Tim Penner. All scripture quotations in this are from the New Living Translation (NLT). The NLT is my personal favorite whenever it comes to children. This book is chronological, for the most part, and it is more paraphrased than word for word stories. The first half has creation, Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Saul, David, Solomon, Daniel, and Jonah. The second half has Jesus' birth, John the Baptist, Jesus' ministry, some parables, the crucifixion (which is briefly mentioned), resurrection, Pentecost, and Paul.The illustrations are adorable (after I realized the eyes do in fact have tiny black pupils and aren't just scary white circles), and some are really funny (like Joseph wearing black and white striped clothing when he was a prisoner). I'm really sad Esther and Ruth weren't featured, along with Job and some of the OT prophets! I also would have loved to see Lazarus, and some of the events in the epistles.I'm a little annoyed sin wasn't mentioned, and the part about the Nile turning into blood said, "First, God made the water in the river impossible to drink and all the fish in it died." It was just little things here and there that weren't 100% accurate. So this was more like Tiny (Partial) Truths.Regardless, this is a cute book and it's great for children of all ages. *I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

I loved this book. Beautifully written, perfect tone (occasional humor, tho it's not a comedy). It's a lovely, thoughtful, imaginative exploration of faith and how it can be contorted to harm people who are still figuring out who they are and who they want to be (Tess, in fact tries on several personas thru the text). And, how people can recover their faith, make it their own, and heal. It's at times lighthearted and at times darkly serious, not shying away from past trauma, and readers who struggle reading stories of abuse should tread carefully.I will say, after reading some of the other posted reviews, that while Tess of the Road is its own story, readers will probably enjoy it more if they read Seraphina first. Seraphina lingers in more detail over the world building, the role of dragons and the way dragons exist in this world, etc; Tess of the Road doesn't spend much time reiterating these world building elements, so I can understand why some readers might have been frustrated. I love revisiting this world and look forward to Hartman's next book!

This book is wonderful, but you have to go into it understanding that the protagonist is (intentionally) an unlikeable screw-up (with a heart of gold). To that end, I had a real issue with Tess at first. But since I love Rachel Hartman's other books, I gave it all of my attention and put my faith in her, and it paid off. Tess of the Road takes you on an amazing journey with twists you don't see coming, and gives you characters you shouldn't like but do anyway. One thing to keep in mind is that the fantasy elements here are very small—it's not a book about dueling wizards and spectacular feats of sorcery on every page. It's more about a girl coming to understand her place in the world and that she's maybe not as big of a screw-up as everyone has led her to believe.

I feel like every time I read one of Rachel Hartman's books, not only does the writing get better, but what surrounds the writing gets better. I wasn't expecting this book to cover so much ground that it did, and I definitely think the author contacted the right sensitivity readers when she wrote about a paraplegic character. But that's perhaps not a good enough reason to read the book, so let me explain why this book is so good!This book is all about Tess, a character who I believe was named after another famous Tess, Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Like Hardy's Tess, this Tess is a girl with a terrible lot in life. She was taken advantage of by a man, and had her life slip out of her control before her eyes, and now she's angry and frustrated and snippy and rude. Tess has nowhere to go... until she decides to make her own way into the world and goes on an adventure on The Road.I came in expecting this book not to be as mystical or magical as the books about Seraphina, if only because Tess is a normal girl without dragon's blood and no special abilities otherwise. But I was wrong! Tess journeys with a quigult friend who is on a very spiritual pilgrimage and who lends a lot of fun and creativity to the story. And even the mundane parts of the story are very entertaining. Tess discovers more about herself and it's satisfying to watch her grow and change throughout the book.I very much enjoyed this book, and I'm very much looking forward to reading more of Tess's adventures. Super recommended!

Wow. As a young woman reading this book I was a little nervous that it was going to be targeted towards a younger audience, and while it is about a teenage girl, it strikes some awesome chords of the truth that young troubled women find in growing up. I feel like so many young women have the same experiences that Tess has and while shes so unlikable in some aspects, I really feel like I felt the same kind of unlikable when I was Tess' age. I felt for her. This book was painful, but it was so beautiful. Highly recommend to young women who had trouble finding their footing in the world as youth/teenagers. Love it!

Tess Dombegh is the younger half sister of Seraphina, the champion of the two prior books set in this beautifully rendered world of saints and dragons, and it is Tess's story we pick up in this next chapter. From the previous books, we know Seraphina's younger siblings mostly as bratty inconveniences for Seraphina to bear, but in this book, Tess is given her chance to stand center stage alongside such richly developed supporting characters that it could certainly be read as a stand alone (though don't skip Seraphina and Shadow Scale altogether -- they are lovely as well).The story follows our "brat", Tess, as she begins to reject the incredibly stifling life she felt she deserved after committing heinous sins (the details of which are slowly revealed over the course of the novel). She has been lead to believe (as many deeply fundamentalist religions convey) that her very existence as a woman is sinful in and of itself, and that she has committed the worst sin by "falling" as no good woman should. So, at age 17, facing decisions made for her by her deeply religious mother and her incompetent father, she strikes out on her own, finding company in her childhood quigutl friend, who sets an adventurous quest at her feet for them to follow. And follow she does, revealing her anything -but-sinful nature as she encounters many brilliant characters along the way.This borders on a spoiler, but I feel it's important to mention a CW: this book deals with rape, sexual shame, and ultimately, infant loss. While I'm no longer in a place where these types of storylines would destroy me, I found myself incredibly sad and tearful many times as her story was revealed, and feel most responsible sharing that warning with those who may *not* be in a place to read such moving and detailed descriptions of sex without consent, without understanding consent, against a very young teenager, and such details of premature birth/subsequent infant death.
