I have a tendency to want to race through the Passion to reach Easter joy. Wangerin's daily devotions have helped me slow down and enter into the sorrow and pain that come before the Resurrection. Recommended.

This book is wonderful to use as a meditation enhancement. Walter Wangerin Jr. relives the passion from his own views. His decriptions brought me to places in meditation that I never traveled before. I felt as if I was with Jesus in Calvery at one point and feeling my own feelings to the passion at another. This was easy reading but intentensly emotionally. I used it as a lenten reflection and loved it.

This book also reminded me that I can do quick, basic mani-pedis at home weekly rather than going to a salon. It's just a matter of working self-care into one's routine. I love that Blanchard's books are so short that I can read them in one sitting. I have the other book by Blanchard, on fashion (I found this one more helpful, but that one was good too). I am about to purchase the one on home-making. I am really enjoying this influence in my life.

It takes a lot of courage to stand up to your own government, especially when they are telling you to do something that is obviously morally wrong. Hiram Bingham had the courage to do that and as a result saved over 2,500 lives of Jews and others on Nazi death lists. This book tells the story of Hiram Bingham after he resigned from the Foreign Service in 1945, but also tells about his private life after that time. Also included are posthumous awards for Bingham and the story of his families 7 year campaign to have a postal stamp issued in his honor. I had such a feeling of sadness reading this book and seeing the struggles Bingham went through in his career for the simple reason that he did the right thing in such terrible times. Much of the book is very uplifting though, when Bingham's family finally receives the recognition their father deserved. A great book about a very courageous man.

This is the only published acccount of the story of Harry Bingham, Vice-Consul, at the U.S. Consulate in Marseilles in Vichy France (circa 1940-1942). While working for the consulate Bingham worked with Varian Fry's Emergency Rescue Committee (ERC), American and French Christian refugee relief groups, and Jewish refugee relief and rescue organizations. Harry Bingham and others succeeded in rescuing hundreds (possibly thousands)of refugees(mostly Jewish)from deportation and death. Bingham was villified by the Consul-General in Marseilles and his diplomatic career ruined by the State Department in Washington, when they became aware of his clandestine efforts to provide visas to numbers of desperate refugees. Long after his death, Bingham was finally exonerated and honored by U.S. Secretary of State Collin Powell more that sixty years after his work in Marseilles, France. The book is written by his son and mostly based on a trove of correspondence and papers found in the Bingham home. While not a truly historical work, Courageous Dissent tells a history story that must be told.
