I am currently reading it and find it most interesting as I live in Argentina and know lots of areas of Patagonia very well. I should like to point out that we in Argentina do not refer to ourselves as "Argentinians" but as "Argentines".

I was two-thirds of the way through a thoroughly engrossing book when I received the Kindle Daily Deal offer of "Beyond the Pampas", downloaded it, read the opening paragraphs, liked it immediately, continued to read and finished it in one extended session. That, in itself, is a measure of how good it is.Herrad, a German, produces English which would shame many an author with English as their mother tongue with only two small, acceptable errors noticed, but not worth recording, in the whole book. As well as German and English, she learnt and speaks Welsh, an almost unheard of activity for those with no Welsh roots, and, by her own accounts, has passable Spanish. Her languages, her flair for descriptive writing, her encounters with unusual people some of whom, because of her innate shyness, she forces herself to meet with considerable trepidation, and her knowledge of Welsh history combine to produce a captivating travelogue illuminating the history and present circumstances of the still extant Welsh colony established in Patagonia in 1865.Having known of the colony for many years, but never impelled to learn more about it, Herrad transforms it from a mere curiosity into something worth investigating further and, for good measure, throws light on the efforts of the Argentine Government to eradicate the indigenous people in much the same way as occurred in North America.My only regret is that, so far, "Beyond the Pampas" appears to be Herrad's only full-length book. Perhaps she could turn her attention to Pembrokeshire, the "Little England beyond Wales".

Unlike the other reviewers I am not Welsh. In fact I don't see the point in the road signs :-)However this book was absolutely fascinating. It falls into a never world between travel, bio & history. It is all the better for not being able to pigeon hole it.The writer has a light touch and really brings to life the lives of the people she meets on her travels and opens up this Welsh speaking outpost in Argentina. The life of the Welsh speaking German writer is almost as interesting as the subject matter.Read it!

I'll put my particular interest in this book up front. I live in Wales and have met descendants of the original settlers. I have family connections to the very southern part of South America. So I look for contemporary accounts of life at the end of the earth.This book ticked all the boxes. Ms Herrad's narrative is easy to read; descriptive without being too wordy. There's a mix of past and present, Welsh and Spanish, old and new. The constant juxtaposition of cultural origins and differences is presented to explain how and why a small group of people set sail from Britain in the mid 19th century and settled in a vast , bleak and unknown territory.I was familiar with the background, but this book has added so much to my knowledge. I was unaware, for example, that the first settlers set up a constitution and more than 50 years before the vote was afforded to women in Britain, they had equal voting rights. The struggles experienced by the original settlers are considered in context. they were white people emigrating to a new land where they were granted ownership rights to land in preference to the indigenous population. This aspect is ignored in other works and Ms Herrad has done well to explore this controversial aspect.In addition, she writes well. Simple scenes of sunset, or vast expanse of pampas are brought to life . A hair raising coach trip is long, dry and dusty for the reader. The friendships and bonds she formed with individual descendants of the settlers are heartwarming and real. This book is an account of discovery, for both author and reader and I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you.Copied from my Amazon UK review.

With a hero who articulates in grunts and single words and a heroine who talks enough for six people, you wouldn’t think this book would be so enchanting, hilarious and holy-hades-hot, but that is the mastery and magic of Pippa Grant. Ares easily already had a place in my heart from the previous books, that whole still waters thing really piquing my curiosity, making me eager to learn more about him, but Felicity was a virtual unknown. Yeah, her throwing her voice at Manning's dinner party was a hilarious scene in “Royally Pucked,” but her being the sister of the Thrusters’ goalie, Nick Murphy, and a talented ventriloquist was about all we knew of her before this book.One of the things that makes this book so great is the dual POV. The Ares chapters are the most concise I’ve seen, but he says a lot with a few words. Felicity more than makes up for it with her multiple puppet voices. Actually, that’s not really fair. Even without the puppets, the characters are omnipresent with Felicity and never hesitate to interject themselves in conversations or just talk among themselves. Okay, I know that sounds schizophrenic because the characters exist only in Felicity's mind which she then manifests through ventriloquist puppets, but they're actually strong, secondary characters in the book, and it's fascinating to watch Felicity use them to sort through puzzlements, argue with herself, provide comic relief, and express herself (and sometimes Ares) through these characters.It makes me wonder if this isn’t another glimpse behind the curtain of Pippa Grant. If the characters of her books are as alive to Ms. Grant as Felicity's are to her, it explains why Grant's characters are so realistic for the reader. It's not only as vivid as watching a movie play out on the big screen, but it's like sitting in the same room with them. But it’s even more than that because I never laugh so hard or read such creative cursing and other made up expressions as when I read one of Grant's books. She puts the “com" in rom-com, but there's still plenty of heart, emotion and tender moments, so reading her work is an all-consuming, fully engaged, visceral experience. Somehow, she manages the perfect push and pull between snarky and tender, and humor and heart. She leaves her readers hung over on these amazing characters, with a stitch in their sides and a huge happy sigh.If this book does nothing else, it gives hope that there’s someone for everyone. Not someone perfect, but someone whose quirks and crazy are the perfect complement for that one person. Ares and Felicity are that person for each other. Felicity is a super smart genius with four college degrees but still looking for the place she fits in life. Ares personifies a scary, dumb brute but Felicity sees deeper, clear down to his soul. Felicity says it best, that being with Ares “isn’t about power. Strength. Ritual. It’s about a magnetic force of connection. It’s about butterfly wings in my belly. It’s about craving, but also about fitting.” And with Felicity, Ares finds a place he fits, saying “I’m finally where I’m supposed to be. Where I never thought I’d find. A home. For my heart.” “Everything. She’s my everything. The last piece to my puzzle.” For a man of few words, he makes every one count.It's always bittersweet when I finish reading a Grant book. It's supremely satisfying to get more of these incredible characters, but I’m always sad to get to the last page. I don’t know how long this series will continue, but into infinity would suit me. If there are a hundred books in this series, it won’t be enough for me. If you’ve read any books in this series, you certainly don’t need my encouragement to buy this one since you're probably already reading it. If you've not familiar with this author or series, grab this one today. It sounds corny to say a romance novel has the potential to be life altering, but Grant's work does. This book is weird. This book is fun. This book is sweet. This book made me cry.Who would have thought that a story about a guy who only speaks in grunts and gifs and hangs with an emotional support monkey that falls for a beautiful genuine ventriloquist would be a book that makes you cry?Only Pippa Grant could pull this off and I love her for it!!Ares Burger is the epitome of the strong and silent type. No, he is the extreme version of strong as silent and I couldn’t possibly love him more for it. I have been waiting, quite impatiently I might add, for Ares’ book. I think that I just knew from the first time we met him that he was going to be my favorite and boy was I right.Felicity was the only possible match for Ares. She’s brilliant, beautiful and totally “talks too much”. She’s also one of the more complex female characters that Pippa’s introduced to us. I cried for Ares but I bawled for Felicity. Her struggle to find her place in the world, specifically within the Thrusters organization where she always wanted to be, was rather heartbreaking. Mostly because she had no control over the way she couldn’t fit induce to the actions of almost everyone around her.I fell in love with Ares and Felicity as individuals but together they were just more...complete. They complimented each other in the best of ways and you could FEEL the love and devotion they had for each other. Their story was perfection!

I wondered how Pippa, would write a whole story, about a man who says very little words and speaks in gifs that make no sense to most people.A gentle giant, with a big heart that plays himself off as not being smart, and not worthy anyone's affection.He's loyal and kind and always putting others above himself.He's a protector on and off the ice.Who would not desire man like that, and of course he from my state in Minnesota.Felicity, doesn't know where she belongs.She's wickedly smart. Has several college degrees with an IQ that blows most of of the water. Her current degree is physical therapy.She desires to work for the Thrusters, a hockey team.When here ex makes trouble for her, her overprotective brother, decides Ares should watch over her.Hockey, is his life and passion, but an injury has him in need of someone to make sure he stays off of it, and to able to get back to the game.The perfect match.They can help each other start out of trouble, what could go wrong?Throw in a monkey and puppets into the mix, and you've got the makings of a beautiful love story.Pippa Grant, is a master at writing the story of Ares and Felicity.This book, will go in your favorite to read again and again.It has mine.

As I began to unpack my mom's things after her death, I found hundreds of letters that she saved from Dad during the war. Surprisingly there were no letters to Dad from her among any of her things which made me wonder why. She had all the letters in chronological order so the very first letter was the day he left for overseas. As I progressed through the letters it became obvious why there were no letters from her, he never received much mail due to being constantly on the move flying around the world.The more I read, the more the words sparked memories from my childhood and extended family. There was an overwhelming tugging that urged me to write the stories down. Writing those stories showed me that it is family dynamics that help build you into the person you become. Good or bad and we all have a little of each. There were 5 kids in the family and all turned out different despite a similar childhood. I was curious to see what I would uncover as I perused through personal encounters of his life.This was a different journey for me since all of my other books are children's picture books. My mind works in simple concepts - writing a grown-up book was a challenge and a thrill.I can't help but think what our Flyboy would say seeing his picture on the cover, "Well ain't that something!"

Through the correspondence of a post-World War II pilot, “Football Flyboy” reconstructs the life of (what I hope the author won’t be offended by me calling) an ordinary man. The author found letters written by her father to her mother while he was stationed at various Asian posts immediately following the end of World War II and has used them as an outline, if you will, to reconstruct his life. It is an interesting effect and coupled with information gleaned from family interviews and first hand knowledge she tells the tale of his life.Again, this is not a football hero or Army Air Corps Ace; Bill “Buster” Cannon was an everyday kind of guy but I think that’s what makes this work. Sometimes it is the everyday people who are the most interesting.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

America is quickly losing the remaining World War II veterans. There has been a lot of interest in collecting their stories. However, most of that interest is focused on the small portion of their lives that was spent in combat with the Axis powers. There isn't as much interest in their births, their formative years, their marriages and families, their post-war jobs, etc.Author Lisa Reinicke has found an interesting way to battle this trend. She obviously cares about the subject of her book – her father. And, of course, she KNOWS there's so much more to him than his service to his country. Ms. Reinicke has collected many of the letters that her father wrote to his young wife during the war, and has augmented them with information about the complete life of First Lt. Bill Cannon – birth, early years, adult years, and death.Occasionally, the connection between the letter and the post-war years is a bit tenuous, to the point of wondering WHY the author chose to attach a particular post-war anecdote to a particular letter. This is the exception, however. What a gem. I'm so happy to have come across this story! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just turned 50 and am already one of those that are ranting "God, I miss the good ole' days" and "They just don't make em' like that anymore." I truly miss the days before technology took over our lives, and I appreciate this glimpse into a life with some REAL. I was raised by a very old fashioned southern gentlemen from Alabama and a gentle loving mother from Mississippi, who taught me how to be a good person, old-school style. My parents are now gone, but their lessons will live on forever. A beautiful story with beautiful narration.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

An incredible story about a man who had no idea what he was headed into. This book had me on a roller coaster of emotions from laughing to crying to awwwing. I loved how the author put in her Dad's letters at the beginning of each chapter, it gave me some insight on what his war was like. I also loved the fact that his wife was his everything, and that I got to learn about the wild family members! I could relate to that, even though this was written in a different time!

I LOVE how the author illustrated the relationship between her parents based upon the letters her father wrote. I also enjoyed that she was able to help me feel like I got to know her entire family from her descriptions. Her insight into how her father grew as times changed, and how he became a better man is incredible. It is wonderful to learn how one man can make drastic changes in his life, while instilling principals and values into the lives of his family. Definitely a must read!

This was an outstanding read! Let me first preface this by saying this is not a book of war time heroics. This is a wide open door to the chaos that was the Cannon family.Each chapter began with one or more of the letters home. After, it went on to explain why he wrote what he did and explore his family and his life. What this is, is an amazing snapshot into late 1945 Army Air Corp life! Being active duty myself, I can relate to some of his letters and the frustration (Although we have email and skype which move FAR faster!)I would like to note also the letters being transcribed exactly as written was a phenomenal touch, and about as close to holding the real things as we, the public, can get!Long story short: Read it. You will feel like you've been a family friend for years afterwards. Keep some tissues close, there are some very touching moments. I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't moved to tears in the waiting room...

I have only finished four chapters, but love it. Superb and humorous narrative on the property of liquids. Interesting historical/mythological digressions that provide deep and lasting insights.

I picked this book up on a whim because I have ongoing issues with liquids. Roughly 20 years ago we moved to the windward side of Oahu which is essentially rain forest. It rains 24/7/365. ...maybe 355. I frequently wake up in the middle of the night because of my inability to breathe liquid, and look out on my back yard which has pools of same. My relationship with liquids is not particularly good at the moment. It is, however, pretty fruitless to do battle with a state of matter. When the opportunity presented itself to understand it somewhat better I decided to give it a go.Mark Miodownik has written a surprising and immensely entertaining book on liquids, to include those which sit right on the border, like tar and peanut butter. He stages his discussion on a transoceanic flight which brings the subject into sharp focus as he argues the property of peanut butter with TSA and goes on to discuss the subtle differences between same and kerosene or nitro glycerine. He strikes a unique balance between levity and serious science in a way that engages both scientists and those who would nod off during a drier and more direct discussion of the topic, or so I think. I fall in the first camp.I not only got a refresher on a subject, or point of view which I had not considered in many years, but learned a good deal on the way. It is not and easy task to write a general interest book on science and keep it interesting, even more so to do it in a way which is neither condescending nor too obtuse, and one which does not require an introductory course. He must be a wonderful professor. To be able to so engage people in print is quite a trick.All that said, I am not quite sure who this was written for or who to recommend it to. I believe that just about anyone could pick it up, have an enjoyable ride and learn quite a bit along the way (to include practical topics, like how to make the perfect cup of tea, a skill which likely needs some honing for those of us in the Americas). This does present an opportunity for those of us not lucky enough to study at Cambridge to experience the gifts of a great popular science educator..someone who understands his subject matter so well he can bring it down to earth even for the uninitiated. Though somewhat less well known, I would compare his writing to Carl Sagan, or Brian Greene (maybe less well known to those who have not tried to grasp string theory) or even Bill Nye or Neal DeGrasse Tyson.That said, perhaps it offers something for everyone. I do believe it is a book that just about anyone can enjoy.

Mark Miodownik is Professor of Materials and Society at the University College London. He studies the properties of matter and their applications to various areas of science and engineering. His first book for a general audience, Stuff Matters, so fascinated me that I wanted to go back and reread it as soon as I had finished it! In Liquid Rules Miodownik continues his exploration of one important type of material, liquids. Before he discusses specific liquids, though, like a good scientist he defines his terms. Just what makes something a liquid? Is peanut butter a liquid? Yes, he says, and so does TSA in American airports! ( In layman’s terms, liquids are just things that assume the shape of their container.) After the introduction, each chapter talks about a different type of liquid, specifically the liquids he encounters on a transatlantic plane trip: Explosive (jet fuel), Intoxicating (alcohol), Sticky (glue), etc. There is a LOT of science, including diagrams of molecular structure (There were some passages where my eyes glazed over a bit.), but also history, little-known information, like the fact that George Orwell, in addition to writing about dystopias in 1984 and Animal Farm, wrote about how to approach utopia by publishing eleven rules for making the perfect cup of tea, and fun tales like Miodinow’s account of his experience getting VERY close to an active volcano or the story of Professor Thomas Parnell of the University of Queensland, who studied what happens if you dump a bunch of tar into a funnel and let it sit for more than 80 years.While Miodownik is explaining the properties of various liquids, he naturally talks about how they are used. I confess that I never thought about how wings are attached to airplanes, and I was more than a little disconcerted to learn that they are GLUED on…until Miodownik described the nature of glues and put my mind at rest. Well, mostly at rest.Some of the liquids he chooses to tell us about are fairly obvious choices, like the jet fuel; others are more idiosyncratic. I was especially intrigued by the discussion of saliva in the chapter Visceral. Saliva is certainly not something that we think about very often, but it plays a big role in our everyday lives, as Mlodinow engagingly explains. I never realized quite all the good things saliva does for me, and I am once again amazed and grateful for the wonder that is my body. Given his intimate acquaintance with saliva and everything it can do for our gustatory pleasures, I guess I should not have been surprised by his rapturous description of just what a good cup of tea should taste like or by his cogently argued case for why you should order coffee rather than tea if you are in an economy-class seat on a plane.Any reader interested in the world around them will find delights in this book, but it will be of most interest to those who can remember a fair bit from their chemistry classes in high school or, better yet, college. Others may need to skip a few paragraphs here and there and move on. So just relax and go with the flow; after all, that is what liquids do!

This is another one of those fun pop-science books that teaches you cool things in a fun manner. He tells the story through the story of an airline flight, starting with the thousands of gallons of kerosene that get loaded into the plane. He explains chemistry at just a deep enough level that even a layman can understand why we use kerosene in lanterns and not gasoline, and why we can cook with olive oil, but also use it for light. He explains why olives were so important to ancient societies, and why whale oil became a prized commodity in the 19th century. As he continuse talking through why alcohol makes us drunk, or glue sticks to things, he maintains a focus on his airplane theme. It makes for a fun unifying piece as he walks us through the science. It's just a fun book - I liked reading it on a Saturday afternoon in a sunbeam.

So I just passed the test yesterday!! I did buy the official ANCC book, but the writing was so dry, and the text so small, I found it impossible to really study from it. I bought this book hoping it would help, and it did! It presents the same information in an easier to read and digest format. You probably have already discovered there aren't that many extra resources to help you study for the Gerontology borads, but this book is definitely the best of what is out there. My study tip is to concentrate on information that is unique to Gerontology, and was not covered in your initial NCLEX testing, and do as many practice questions as you can. Good luck!

I completed 240 of the 500 practice questions - they were very good, and I felt confident taking the ANCC gerontological nurse certification examination (which I passed on the first attempt). Additionally, the summaries of knowledge needed for various content areas were helpful. I always struggle with theories, and the section covering that content was quite helpful. I would definitely recommend this resource!

This is the only book I️ used to prepare for the Getontology Nurse certification exam. It had the most practice questions out of any book I could find rationales were great. I took the test today and passed.

I credit this book to my passing of the exam. I learn best by going through test questions, and this book had more than the others that I looked at. The explanations of the answers are thorough.

500 sample questions. I used this to study along with one other guide...i only reviewed for 2 days and passed.

This book has a lot of great information but a lot of errors as well. It advertises 500 review questions. Well that’s great and all but a lot of the questions are repeated and some of the choices for answers are the same. I don’t think this prepared me as well as others have said.
