One of the wonderful 'Art of' books for Miyazaki contains his preliminary sketches as well as artwork from the original manga this film was based off. I had to go through a few returns to get a decent, non-damaged copy as most of them are coming from third parties now. I particularly love Miyazaki's beautiful backgrounds and there are plenty of those offered here, esp. the glorious seascapes and Porco's hidden island hangout. Miya-san said he targeted this film to the middle-aged salary-man and he hit the mark, the book is a tremendous reminder of the magic of the film. Highly recommended.

A good book for Porco Rosso fans. Gives some background info and beautiful artwork.Good addition to my Miyazaki collection.

To me this artbook follows the line of the Studio Ghibli artbooks, with a lot of storyboards and beatiful sketches, but with a different content structure. There's even a whole chapter for the "Ships in the Sky" which is awesome.

Amazing art book, but wish there was more drawings and less pictures from the movie.

Half of this art book is taken up by the script of the english translation for "Porco Rosso." What art you can find here is really quite spectacular, but I honestly expected more from such a beautiful movie.

I love the movie Porco Rosso.I liked the book a lot. It described where the story came from, and the historical background. It also had a small section describing each character. The most interesting part is where they describe the various backgrounds.There honestly was not that much interesting information.I was expecting for an explanation of the ending of the movie. They didn't even mention the part of the movie where Marco and Curtis fought. They didn't mention that Porco may have became a human again, (because of Gina's love and Fio's kiss, and because Curtis kept asking to see Marco's face after they fought) or whether or not Gina and Marco ended up together. (Porco's plane could be seen in the background)Altogether, the book was good.I am glad that I bought it.

Now that Master Miyazaki has announced that he is retiring, and with no prospect forPorco Rosso II, this could be like a consolation for the future.From the technical point of view the book contains convincing sea planes from the “The Age of the Flying Boat” and likely prototypes or hybrids. It also contain some drawings of real and believable Pre WW I, and WW I planes.This book also may appeal anime fans of alternate history (although not that alternate).If you are a fan of Miyazaki and seaplanes, this is a must!

Yet others seem to travel the wonderful path between the first two groups: gifted with amazing language and the depth and skill to write almost poetically, while also keeping a very interesting plot alive and burning (Banville once said he hardly even cared about plot—when it comes to plot he uses his alias Benjamin Black).Nadeem Aslam, by my lights, delivers the best of both worlds. A language so rich and filling it sometimes resemble very thick, sweet, cream, traversing a story that on occasion (and unexpectedly) literally (pun intended) explodes into action.Reading Aslam is like walking a dense jungle, you take care where you place your feet and you take in an atmosphere and surrounding that, at times, is almost too rich to comprehend. So, you re-read the sentence, or paragraph which now makes perfect sense: sings perfect sense.This book moved me on many levels. For one, it raised the bar on how well something can be written while it, for two, also opened my eyes (and I mean A Clockwork Orange style opened my eyes) to the mind of the devout Muslim. This terrified me a little—until I realize that we encounter the same mind in the devout, fundamentalist Christian: only the words and names of prophets differ.I must say that I am surprised that Aslam has not join Rushdie’s fate, he is that open (and, I assume, critical) about the often unreasonable and now and then bordering on insane dictates of the prophet. He also makes it very, very clear that women hardly even exist for the devout Muslim; she has very few, if any rights, beyond conceiving and giving birth (to, we pray, boys).There is a gripping plot-thread running through this amazing narrative, that resolves in an amazing fashion toward the end of the novel. I wondered how Aslam was going to handle this, and he handles it admirably.To beat a cliché to death: I could not recommend this book any higher.

From the newspaper reviews I expected the book to be sad, and to involve long-suffering women, traditional religion( fundamentalist Islam) and shame. But It was so sad that I found I could only read a little at a time, But I kept going because it was so beautifully written, and because, unexpectedly, I felt sorry for the men, too. Everyone seemed trapped within a structured life that left little room for the imagination, or creativity, The two children fled their judgmental mother, but had real difficulty forming relationships and finding their place in society, not only in England, where they were raised, but in Pakistan as well. Readers will probably like the father best, because he has more in common with us Westerners, loves poetry and is the only secular- minded person in the book. I found myself pulling for him to find happiness beyond his life with his narrow-minded wife, I learned some new things about Islam, such as that a man who divorces his wife and regrets it must give her up to marry another man, and then she can return to him again as his wife. There was a woman in the English-Pakistani neighborhood whose arranged marriage (in Pakistan) ended in divorce, brought her back to England in search of a man to briefly marry, then divorce, so she could return to her son and her husband, abroad. I was pulling for this women to find happiness with the secular husband. It's a fascinating view into the lives of first and second generation Muslims living in England and I hope it finds a wide readership.

A very apropos novel about the Pakistani immigration to the London area in the 1960's. The experience hasn't much changed with regard to today's immigration crisis in Europe and the politicized immigration environment in the US. The book provides a devastating look at Islam and how religion contributes to the lack of assimilation and the building of cultural walls. The author is Pakistani and immigrated to London when he was a child, so the story is based on real experiences typical of the time. The book is beautifully written with exquisite, sensual descriptions of the world around the characters all the while contrasting with the cruelty and superstition that flourished in the immigrant settlements.

A beautiful lyrical novel about Pakistani immigrants in England. I have read all the books written by Nadeem Aslam and this was almost my favorite. I say that because he is such a skilled and talented writer it is hard to choose. Although beautifully written it is also brutal and very sad. It was really informative regarding the brutality and unfairness and selfishness of many religious traditions.

Immigrants living in England find the merging of two cultures difficult. Their fundamentalist religious practices are already at odds between the generations and the murder of two family members cause even more dysfunction, misunderstanding and distance between them. The authors descriptions of life, food, community, flowers and butterflies add both color and flavor to the story. The words 'dark' and 'thoughtful' could also be used to describe the mood of the read. A very good read.

In this beautifully written book, Aslam paints a vivid picture of life for a Pakistani family as it struggles to exist in London. Part of the family tries to assimilate, the other resists assimilation, both with disastrous consequences.

This book took a while to get into, but really sucked me in. I felt at first that the analogies were just over the top. Every sentence, so it wasn't subtle. But it really turned into an incredibly sensitive discussion of the Muslim community in a UK town and all of the challenges that they face socially. A very worthwhile book.

I have read numerous books on this subject. Many of them have too many errors, focus on trivial considerations or arcane mathematical technicalities, and few cover the important subject of applying critical thinking not only to numbers but words (logic, reasoning protocol, etc.). Given that, this is one of the very best books on the topic I have read yet.I really liked the author splitting his subject in three main categories: 1) evaluating numbers; 2) evaluating words; 3) how the scientific method works. Each section covers its respective subject in a thorough and entertaining way.Within the evaluating numbers section the author covers all the ways in which visual quantitative data (graphs) can fool you. You really have to watch very carefully the scale of the X- and Y-axes to understand if someone is trying to trick you. The author does a good job of explaining the difference between correlation and causation (and how not to confuse the two). He also warns you not to confuse what is tested as statistically significant and yet can be immaterial (small differences pop up as statistically significant that have little bearing on the outcome when you have very large samples). The author also warns against extrapolating trends especially when you go outside the boundaries of the variable values you observed within the learning sample of your data set. The author covers well the various biases and errors that can affect sampling (participation bias, reporting bias, etc.). The chapter on probabilities is excellent with a well-defined differentiation between classic probabilities, frequentist probabilities, and Bayesian probabilities.Within the evaluating words section, the author warns about understanding the actual domain narrowness of experts. He does a good job of explaining the difference between incidence and prevalence rate. He provides a very good coverage on behavioral risk perception that is so detached from probabilistic thinking.Within the scientific method section, the author defines the different types of reasoning (deduction, induction, abduction). He also covers logic and logic notation. He also covers in greater detail Bayesian statistics. The latter is a subject that permeates every section of the book. And, he does a good job of explaining Bayes thanks to his four- quadrant framework that is really helpful in calculating the related Bayesian statistics.The author makes just one small error where he confuses R Square with R (correlation). R Square explains how much the variance in one variable can be explained by the other variable. Meanwhile, R simply tells you the strength and the direction of the relationship between those two variables. Also, remember R is often negative (so the explanation bit here not only is wrong but is divergent) meanwhile R Square can’t be negative by definition. This is a minor typo. I know the author knows that stuff. One math typo in a 250-page book is far better than most books on the subject.

I've seen some reviews lamenting that this isn't a book on the causes and nature of cognitive errors, and I agree that's a fascinating subject, but there are other books that address it.Weaponized Lies is, in essence, an entertaining beginning textbook on logic, fact checking, critical thinking, and information assessment. Readers already familiar with these subjects may find it a bit slow, and those well versed in one or more of these areas may even be frustrated when the book doesn’t go further or even stray into areas it’s not actually designed to address.Daniel J. Levitin is a noted American/Canadian cognitive psychologist and neuroscientist. He’s also a musician, a record producer, and - of course - an author. He’s contributed to the Billboard Encyclopedia of Record Producers and edited Foundations of Cognitive Psychology: Core Readings, and written numerous academic articles and four bestsellers to date.The first two bestsellers were on music and the mind, which is not surprising, as Levitin is a noted expert in the field of music perception and cognition, but these books have a very broad footprint, touching on social behaviour, the development and evolution of language, and more. His third bestseller essentially seeks to explain how the brain works, how we perceive and think, and to teach how to do so more clearly and efficiently. Weaponized Lies seems to be a natural progression of this line of thought, addressing a cluster of cognitive issues that may, together, constitute most people’s greatest obstacle to effective thinking.In terms of scope, Weaponized Lies could be used as a secondary or possibly even primary textbook for a 100-level class on information analysis, critical thinking, and logic. Levitin also talks a bit about how people sort the truth by simply making false graphs with unlabeled axes or how there are more subtle aspects such as subtly changing the denominator (eg when talking about individuals versus families). Altogether I found these extremely useful reads. One thing that was a little troublesome to me was that they were fairly similar books. I think it does make sense for the author to repurpose his text into more current times where we talk about fake news and so forth but I still found the overlap between the two books disconcerting.

Great road map of the island. Each side is has a different half of the island. Folds into 5"X10" size with sturdy glossy cardboard cover. Each map side is comprised of 21 map panels so a height 30" and a length 35". The scale of the map is 1: 14 500. There is a nice place name index so you can easily locate cities and sites. I have a collection of maps for every place I travel. This is the best one for Bermuda now that the map by Brian Horsfield is out of print (The Bermuda Islands, 1996). Another excellent one is The Bermuda Pullout Map produced by the Ministry of Works and Engineering in 2003. I have visited Bermuda every year since 1997. I highly recommend this map for excellent quality of paper and visual display.

I'm a map lover, and this map was much better than what I could find in the guide books.

This map is so old, out of date. Incredible they have the guts to sell this and call it a guide.
