If you're like me, you're an English speaking Italian learner looking out for something meaty but manageable to read. This definitely fits the bill, and there is a freely available English translation you can use as a crib sheet when you get stuck.The Italian is straightforward to read, but also includes some colloquialisms, so it really is good for learning if you've already got the basics of Italian down and now want to start challenging yourself a little without going overboard.Now about the story: it's a little boy's journal about his life in the 19th century during the school year, and the whole book is him learning how to be a good citizen. His teacher assigns him stories to read about other little boys doing what's best for their family and country...and a lot of the kids in these stories DIE...and it's odd how these are painted as somewhat bittersweet happy endings. The very strong nationalist vibe might be a little distracting for some readers (a very big deal is made out of shaking the king of Italy's hand). But on the other hand, it is an interesting snapshot of the mindset of what morals parents wanted to pass on to their children.So, good book for learning Italian! Also a little depressing but otherwise warm and well-meaning story. Enrico is surrounded by some big-hearted adults.

Now I am learning italian and I am enyoing this tender book. The book it's recomended by children but I am having a good time reading it again and I am sure it's good for all ages.
