Got this for my 1st grader who is working hard to become an independent reader. He and his 4.5 year old brother love having me read them aloud, and then he will persist through several more pages when I decide that I am not going to read any more. I think he'll be working through them again on his own within the next few months. The stories are easily digestible for the kids, not too dumbed down for the adults, and each one takes about 5 nights to read if you spend 30 minutes or so per night reading aloud. The craft ideas at the end are creative, but we haven't tried them yet...

My son loves this series. He's a second grader who just started reading chapter books this year independently. This is by far his favorite chapter book series and I've purchased a ton to encourage his interest in reading.

Bought this for our 8 year old daughter for her birthday. She loves the series and was thrilled to have a set of her own. She admits that a few of the books and sequences are a little intense, but overall enjoys all the stories greatly.

My six year old is into the Magic Tree House books. We had read all of the first series and found out there was a whole second series. It was nice to be able to get the whole thing at once. It came quickly and it perfect condition. We are having a blast reading our way through it.

A great series to undertake with a class of 7-9 year olds

This was a Christmas gift for my 7-year old great nephew. He loves these books. He had read through the first group at record speed and was ready to move on the Merlin Missions. He is enjoying this set as well if not more than the first set.

My six-year-old son loves books. He loves to listen to me read them and he looks forward to bedtime now.

This is a Christmas gift for my 7 year old grandson. He has read most of the Magic Tree House series. He will be so excited to get this set.

An excellent read about a little-known aspect of The Space Race.

Great read! Fills in some sadly missing critical history of America's space program.

I really enjoyed this book, even though I am not all that interested in history or aerospace. You really come away with an understanding of what it took for these women to become pilots and try to become astronauts. Excellent overview of Talmud. This book gives a history of the Talmud, as well as underlying. concepts. It is illustrated by specific passages. Great introduction for people who want to know about the structure, history, and messages of the Talmud. It is not overwhelmng.

Excellent intro primer to the Talmud! It would have been helpful to have more examples, especially about the discussions of how various sages and rabbis came to same conclusions through different logic or different conclusions via the same logic. But an interesting introduction to the Talmud.

Disappointed! It's more a commentary on the parts of the Talmud.

This is as close as I have come to the real thing. The author does an excellent job of translating into layperson's language the insights one gains from scholarly study of the Talmud.

I love the way Rabbi Steinsaltz walks his reader through the pages of such rich history, such beautiful lore and meaningful tradition and makes it all living. I highly recommend the book for beginners who approach the topic of Rabbinic literature and related studies. Those who know Rabbinic literature and history already might be bored a bit. The book gets to be a bit philosophical but not too scholarly. It is fairly easy to understand and really should be read in one gulp. This way the information scattered in all the chapters would make sense. My only disappointment with the book, though the material is excellent, there are not sources listed, there are no detailed bibliographies. It is as if Rabbi Steinsaltz just wrote it all from memory one afternoon. May be it is just me but I crave sources and bibliographies on the information that interests me so much.

It was what I thought it would be do not think this will be the only book you will need to understand the Talmud

Talmud for dummies--very helpful.

We didn't have anything quite like this when I started getting interested in pulps 10 years ago. There were some other books that covered some of the same ground, but not with this combination of excellent illustrations and concise but helpful text. The various authors of the essays are dedicated pulp culture enthusiasts with long years of experience. Ed Hulse, one of the editors, wrote The Blood 'n' Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction, an excellent, detailed overview of the writing that can be found in pulps (much of which is well done, and a lot of fun). Hulse covers the western pulps in this volume, and "The Great Pulp Authors." He is the right guy to do these segments. Doug Ellis, who co-founded one of the best pulp conventions now running, The Windy City Pulp and Paper convention, has edited several pulp anthologies, and put together an excellent study of the "spicy" pulps, a 2003 award winner. David Saunders, whose father was the celebrated pulp cover artist Norman Saunders, has done more than anyone I know to preserve the art and biographies of numerous of the artists whose work is seen in these pages. Each of the other authors are notable contributors themselves. Why do some of us become so taken with the pulp world? I think these pages help make that clear. During their years of popularity (mainly the first half of the 20th Century), pulps were central to American popular culture. As one dives into this world, one can find both much of what we grew up with in terms of cultural icons (both admirable and perhaps less so at times...), as well as the seeds of what was to come. Television, comic books, and hip pocket paperbacks eventually brought about the demise of the pulps, but not before the pulps left their stamp on our world. In part because of the efforts of the people involved in this book, pulps can be collected and preserved by those of us who have the collecting bug (like me, I confess). A 60 - 70 year old pulp in great condition is a delight to behold. As this collection attests, the illustrators involved could paint figurative story-telling art with terrific skill, craft and imagination. It's becoming a bit of a lost art it seems, but here it is to enjoy. Further, several of the writers in this book are involved with the mini-industry of reprinting pulp fiction to enjoy today, without trying to read the darn pulps themselves (which tend to be rather fragile, for reasons explained along with the history of the pulps in this book). For me, reading and collecting pulps has brought some real pleasure into my life -- a world totally different from that in which I make a living, and, too, a wonderful microcosmic view of the beginnings of the culture we live in. If you can get through this book without getting hooked, I'll be a bit surprised.

I have been collecting pulp magazines since 1972 and own at least a half dozen books about pulp magazine art. This one is the best of the lot by a country mile. It is true that good things come to those that wait. This is a must have for anyone that not only enjoys the art but also the history of the pulps.

What I loved about it: high-quality color reproduction, wall-to-wall eye candy but tastefully presented; the astounding variety in the pulps—genres and odd subgenres—is well represented; the editors clearly took pains to minimize overlap with previous books on pulp art; they don’t point it out that often, but there are a lot of ultra-rare covers depicted, items you would be hard pressed to discover any other way; there’s a nice selection of the overlooked British pulps and at least one Canadian; the text sections are nicely written and not fannishly detailed; great captions for every illo; and the book has an index for voyeurs in a hurry. Finally, there’s nothing stingy about this book. It has A LOT of art. What I didn’t love about it: nothing! Terrific book!

Super quality all the way around -- the art itself, the rich color, the writing and organization, the splendid pull quotes, and even the glossy paper (not a bit pulpy!) that is a pleasure to view and touch. It's a treat to see decades of pulps given such loving treatment by talented editors who know the subject like they know the bite of cold air and bitter coffee on a long stake out. The book beautifully draws in the novice, while providing plenty of detailed content for people who are already fans of the genre. It's a panoramic window to a time when men were men, and women were glad of it.

This is the best presentation of the broad range of pulp art I have ever seen. Beautifully produced, with individual chapters devoted to each of the main fields of pulp magazines: Detective, Horror, Science Fiction, Sports, etc. Profusely illustrated and written by experts in the popular magazines of the first half of the 20th century, the book will please anyone interested in the pulp magazine phenomena, and popular art in general.

This book is gorgeous! As a die-hard pulp fan I ordered this book months ago. It was well worth the wait. Beautifully illustrated in full color with enlightening quotes from famous authors and others about pulps; chapters are arranged by topic. Hero pulps, westerns, spicy pulps, and more, all are lovingly detailed by experts who really know their stuff. This is a book to treasure and peruse over and over again. This is clearly a labor of love and that affection shows on each and every page

An unbelievable coffee table book of more pulp covers than you could ever possibly need in more genres than I even knew about. Its dimensions are similar to a record album and it's an inch thick. Fantastic color reproduction on sturdy paper. Besides the eye-catching content, it acts as a history of early American art illustration, a gap which really needed filling.Chapters:Foreward: F. Paul Wilson (writer of The Keep, etc..)Introduction: Birth of the PulpsIn Search of Adventure (action pulp, ERB, Adventure covers)Cops, Crooks & Private DicksRiding the Range (Westerns, Max Brand, etc..)Above the Clouds & In the Trenches (Aviation & War, Zeps & Subs)Armchair Athletics (Sports, Sport Story, etc...)Love on the Newstands (Romance, Daisy Bacon, Western love, etc)The Horror! The Horror! (Horror, sex & sadism, The Big Three, etc..)Adventures in Other Worlds (sci-fi, fantasy, Hugo G, British Sci Fi, etc)When We Needed A Hero (Heroes, The Shadow, Doc Savage, Villain Pulps (Fu Manchu), etc)Adding More Than A Pinch of Spice (sexy stuff, Henry Marcus, NSFW stuff)Wizards with a Brush (incl. Norman Saunders & Walter Baumhofer)Wizards With A Pen (Lovecraft, Howard, etc)Honestly, it's a treasure trove.

Beautifully written, with genuine enthusiasm for the subject. Problem: The subject, at least when it comes to "ideal" crystals, is inevitably mathematical. Symmetry, with attendant group theory, is in there starting early on. And since this is a VSI, there's no room for a sidebar on what the heck group theory is. So if you have no clue (I do have some exposure to "abstract algebra"), you're pretty much blindsided. This one you really need to page through first, to see if you can hold on for the ride.

The author of this book should write so many more books, what a good read! The illustrations were informative and clear and the writing was not only informative, but there was also a distinct sense of humor. I would highly recommend this to anyone working with or interested in crystallography or XRD.

Great for updating after 50 yrs

Dubai: The Vulnerability of Success

Review

This is the best study of Dubai that I have read and an important contribution to the still meager literature on the extraordinary formation that is the United Arab Emirates. Especially interesting is the book's discussion of the emirates' founding under British rule and the continuing influence of this imperial history on its politics and society; the imported character of its 'Arab' identity; and the regional context that informs everything from security concerns to demography. (Faisal Devji, St. Antony's College, University of Oxford, and author of Landscapes of the Jihad: Militancy, Morality, Modernity)Davidson traces Dubai's rise from sleepy Gulf port to player on the world scene. (Christopher Hawthorne Los Angeles Times)Mr. Davidson nicely lays out this flashy emirate's astonishing ascent from tiny fishing and pearling village to global hub. (Stephen Kotkin New York Times)Davidson offers a detailed historical and topical study of the Dubai phenomenon. (Foreign Affairs)Davidson gives an excellent overview of Dubai, the UAE in general, and its path to economic development... Recommended. (Choice)Perhaps the best look at this desert mirage is this prescient book published in 2008. Well before the real estate debacle, Davidson raised questions about how long Dubai could remain immune from regional conflict, organized crime, and terrorism, all of which would swiftly affect its allure as a haven for investment and luxury travel. (Foreign Policy)It is no surprise a book that analyses Dubai's weaknesses, as well as its virtues, provoked nervousness in the emirate and was under threat of being banned.... Davidson's book should be seen in Dubai as an important contribution. The city-state has been running fast and wild for years. Taking a pause to consider the impact of its rapid growth is a healthy exercise. (Financial Times)A noteworthy reference for future studies on the country and related topics. (Mei Zhang Journal of Regional Science 1900-01-00)Comprehensive and detailed. (Arang Keshavarzian Arab Studies Journal 1900-01-00)This monograph is a first-rate piece of scholarship, and provides a wealth of information and analysis about Dubai. (Erik Eliav Freas Historian)

Davidson takes the reader behind the scenes of Dubai. Roughly a third of the book is about the history of the UAE. The rest of the book covers such topics as economic diversification, organized crime, and the challenge of developing a federalist mentality. If there is a theme to the book, it is the dilemma of the "rentier pathology." In this term, Davidson is referring to a citizenry who are, in a word, spoiled. If they have jobs at all, they are no-show sinecures in the public sector. Many of these citizens have never had to work, have never had to pay taxes, and depend on imported temporary workers to do the grunt work. Such largess has allowed the emir to maintain power as an absolute monarch, but can this arrangement survive an economic downturn?Davidson is appropriately critical of the Dubai monarchy without being sensationalist. There are times when the professorial tone becomes annoying, as when names of numerous minor historical figures are thrown at the reader. All in all, it's an excellent book for someone with a serious interest in Dubai. Those who have an interest in Dubai should also read Jim Krane's "City of Gold: Dubai and the Dream of Capitalism," which is lighter in style of writing and puts a greater emphasis on day-to-day life.

Despite the myriad of articles and sound bites about the latest achievements of Dubai, works dedicated to an in depth analysis of the city state have been extremely sparse. Search Dubai in Amazon and nearly all the books published were travel guides, with the exception of the book Dubai & Co.: Global Strategies for Doing Business in the Gulf States. There is a smattering of outdated literature about the UAE, but this does not little to illuminate the underlying trends and contradictions of the Emirate. Therefore Christopher M Davidson's academic work is particularly interesting and timely. Titled the vulnerability of success, this book has become the `go to' for a history of the Emirate and the ability to put the current achievements in context.Upon starting the book, I immediately skipped from the 19th century tribal histories to the last chapter on the eponymous `Vulnerabilities of Success'. I was disappointed to find little that had not already been discussed in further detail elsewhere. For example, the subsection: `Present threat of Terror' merited only 2 pages, and the dynamics of the economy in the last few years seems largely neglected. For those looking for an up to date picture of Dubai politics and economics, even The Report Dubai 2007 contains more depth. But lacking any other reading material on Dubai, I flipped back to 19th century tribal politics.Despite his title, Davidson's work on the history of Dubai is the core of this book, and where he certainly has the most to contribute. Through his narrative it becomes clear how far back the tradition of capitalism and immigration extend, exemplified in the anecdote that "Some of the earliest motorcars imported into Dubai were purchased for the expressed purpose of bringing Pakistanis across the mountains from Fujairah so they could work without the need for visas or time consuming paperwork." (91) Davidson also gives satisfactory answers to some of the most vexing questions about demographics, such as stating authoritatively that nationals account for only 4% of the population, and that 75% of the population is male. (168, 192) Finally, he manages to provide a complete picture of Dubai's role in the UAE and the gulf. One revelation is that the UAE actually convinced Saddam to leave power:The UAE also tried to head off the 2003 Anglo-American invasion of Iraq by offering Saddam Hussein and his family sanctuary on the condition that he respected Bush's ultimatum and left Iraq. Although it would appear that Saddam actually accepted this proposal, only for the Arab League to later force the UAE to withdraw it on the grounds that it represented interference in a fellow member's internal affairs. (p. 168 from Sheikh Muhammad bin Zayed in 2005)Another is the recent integration of Dubai's forces into the UAE network, and the Unions attempts to cozy up to numerous western powers. In sum, this is the reference book that lays the groundwork for further research on Dubai's history. While weak in analyzing emerging trends, Davidson's is valuable due to a thorough and interesting investigation into the context of the phenomenon that is Dubai.

This book is for the serious reader; it reads like an academic treatise--dense, magnificently researched with fascinating subject matter. The first couple chapters succinctly cover the emirate's history. The following chapters detail the first free zone--Jebel Ali port--and the recent emergence of Dubai's diversified economy.Chapter five concentrates of the distributed-wealth principle and Dubai's reliance on its rentier nature. The next chapter speaks of the paradoxes embedded in present day Dubai(the mix of East-West).Dubai's relationships with the other emirates are explored in chapter seven, providing some really fascinating insights (who know alcohol was legal in Sharjah until Suadi helped bail the emirate out of its banking crisis in 1989?).And the book concludes with a chapter on Dubai's naughty underbelly--gun running, terrorism, etc. Personally, I found it the least interesting chapter of the book. One warning: if I hadn't lived in Dubai for a year before reading this book, it would not have resonated as strongly. Frankly, if you don't have a baseline understanding of Dubai, you may not get much out of it; the book is too dense and specific for a cursory understanding.

Although written by an academic authority on the subject this book was very readable, and in places I had to remind myself this was non-fiction, such is the scale and pace of Dubai's development. I ordered this quite some time ago, as a pre-release, and only received it this month, so there must have been some delays, but it was worth it. The history is fascinating and it is clear that the origins of the city still have a major influence on its current activities. I never understood before how the UAE and Dubai fitted together, along with many other questions I used to have in mind, but I now found explanations to this normally hidden and secretive part of the world. The information on the ruling families is incredible. Although it would have been good to have some color to the maps included, this book is absolutely invaluable and seems to be written by a genuinely neutral and construcitvely critical author, unlike most other books on the Persian Gulf.

Without a doubt John Peel changed my life he opened me up to a world of music I never knew existed - you are truly missed!

The first half, written by Peel, is fairly interesting, if disjointed. But the half finished posthumously by his family is a shocking derailment of a narrative just getting underway. It's a shame that John couldn't finish his autobiography - he led an interesting life at an interesting time.

I stopped reading this once I discovered it was more of a love memoir from Peel's wife than a biography of his brilliant life as a dj.

Ah, to think what this book could have been. As you probably know John Peel died before he could finish this memoir, which is a shame because in the 165 pages that he does write, Peele proves to be a very engaging, very self-deprecating, and very funny writer. Die-hard Peel fans and music addicts may also be disappointed that most of these chapters focus on his childhood and young adulthood period, including the years that he spent living and working in the US state of Texas in the early 1960s (Peel writes one amazing account about meeting JFK in Dallas!). So, what made Peel most famous --- his years as a BBC disc jockey and influential music tastemaker --- is not covered by the man himself. But even in those 165 pages, Peel offers many examples of what influenced and powered his love for music. But the music does not entirely die with the end of Peel's contributions to this book. His widow, Sheila Ravenscroft, does an outstanding job of filling in the resultant blanks, plus she uses portions of Peel's diary to recount various events, incidents, and personalities that he meets over the years as a DJ. His close friendship, and later falling out, with Marc Bolan of T.Rex, is one especially fascinating passage. Of course we all could have wished for a "complete" John Peel memoir, and lots more music observations, but given the situation and limitations, I feel that Sheila did a most commendable job of finishing this book and making it as interesting as it was. And frankly, she's a darn good writer too. Sympathetic, observant, and funny. No wonder she and John were such a devoted couple.

A beautifully written account of the life and thoughts of one of the UK's most popular DJ's. This book is written in two halves. The first half is in the words of Peel himself, and due to his untimely death, he never got to complete the full autobiography. His wife Sheila Ravenscroft narrates the second half. This is an unusual way to have completed the book, but it works and both parties can be proud of their literary skills. The book charts Peels life through his tough unbringing, difficult parential relationship, his time in the army and his five years overseas in his own words. His wife picks up the latter years but also gives an insight into their life together. I must admit to never actually listening to his radio shows (they were a little before my time) but was quite familiar with his reputation of breaking through and discovering new music. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it will appeal to any music lover. It is well written and I think that John would be proud of the final draft even if he is in another heavenly place.

for this to put on the shelves in the US so I ordered my copy from a UK shop. Was a funny and bittersweet insight into my favorite voice on the radio.Years spent listening to Peelie via internet at odd hours here in the States, collecting the Peel Sessions... Peel formed my youth and adult life by championing the champions of music.Best to read about his life in his and his family's own words (and getting to the point where his are cut short is just as jarring and upsetting as hearing the news back in Oct '04).John would probably be embarrassed by a five star review but here it is.

Having been one of the girls who was mesmerized by John Ravenscroft when I was 14 and a Beatlemaniac in Dallas, imagine my surprise to find out how famous he had become. Although he had a virtual throng of young ladies eager to spend time with anyone remotely connected with the Beatles I found him be quite the gentleman whenever we were together. I remember him playing the Stones and telling me that someday they would be as big as the Beatles. It was a pleasure reading about his life with Sheila and a little bittersweet that his life ended too soon.

To combat this problem, Xander's grandmother gives him a special baku charm, which is supposed to ease his dreams by taking them away. Xander soon realizes that he has turned his world upside down by using the baku foolishly. Thus begins a new adventure for Xander, who must save his family and friends. Dilloway's research into Japanese folklore, the well-crafted characters, and the setting make this fast-paced tale perfect for fans of Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson" and Jennifer Nielsen's "Mark of the Thief" series. VERDICT Readers will eagerly anticipate the next volume. Purchase where mythology-based adventures are popular.—William Anderson, Scott County Public Library, IN

Review

This sequel to Momotaro: Xander and the Lost Island of Monsters(2016) begins on the heels of Xander Miyamoto learning he's the new Momotaro, a demon-fighting warrior. He should be thrilled, but his powers have waned, he's plagued by nightmares, and his long-absent mother has returned without warning. Xander's grandmothergives him a baku (special charm) to help fight the nightmares, cautioning himnot to use it unless absolutely necessary, for misuse causes the theft ofdreams. Signs reveal that Xander's use of the baku could open the door for oni(monsters) and their king to cause mass destruction in the world. It's up toXander and his friends Peyton and Jinx to step into a dangerous dream worldwhere they encounter fantastic beasts, the Angry Lord of Light, and a host ofphysical challenges. Xander is forced to make hard choices and discover whetherhe's true hero material. Lessons are learned--some the hard way--but perhaps themost important are sacrifice, selflessness, and that words and imagination dohave power. -- Jeanne Fredriksen, Booklist Dilloway's research intoJapanese folklore, the well-crafted characters, and the setting make thisfast-paced tale perfect for fans of Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson" and JenniferNielsen's "Mark of the Thief" series. ¬VERDICT Readers will eagerly anticipatethe next volume. Purchase where mythology-based adventures are popular.-William¬Anderson, Scott County Public Library, IN, School Library Journal  With higher stakes than before, this half-Japanese, half-Irish 12-year-old dives deep into his own personalpsychology as he battles demonic oni on his quest to find the baku (adream-stealing anteater) and restore his Momotaro power. In a plot that feelscomfortably familiar, Xander is lured by the forces of evil, is offered thepower of ruling the galaxy, and is horrified when he sees that the enemy hashis own face. But through the kabuki mask of Japanese mythology, these familiarthemes take a surprising twist, with appearances by Kintaro, the Golden Boy,Fudo-Myoo, the Angry Lord of Light, and the Princess Kaguya. Xander slowlyrealizes that true things bring power and assistance: true anger, true fear, and true compassion. He also learns the importance of words from PrincessKaguya. "Words are the sounds of the heart, Xander-san....What you say toothers--and yourself--matters a great deal." A satisfying sequel thatbalances the monsters of Japanese mythology with the personal demons of alikable protagonist; fans will be waiting to see what battles he will fightnext. My daughter absolutely loved reading this book! Finished in 2 days!

I was drawn to the Momotaro series because it features an Asian hero and mythology and because I love children’s books. Xander’s adventures remind me that people go through growing pains and become stronger individuals for them.Note: If you haven’t read the first book, there will be spoilers from that one!!WHAT I LIKEDEverything I Liked from the First BookAsian MC, Japanese mythology & culture, good family dynamics (minus the entrance of the mother figure), beautiful artwork . . . Momotaro #2 remains true to the elements that I enjoyed from book one. For more details, click here to read my review of Momotaro #1.Character GrowthXander is still a pubescent teen dealing with tween issues, and now he’s one with special powers. He’s quite the handful. That said, this provides much room for character growth, and Xander does just that. Young readers can relate to Xander’s problems and learn how to work through issues.Follows Events of the First NovelI love how Xander of the Dream Thief follows through with events of the first novel. For example, the primary conflict in the novel is spurred by the after-effects of Xander’s last adventure. Also affected are his relationships with friends, classmates, and family. (I’d talk more about these details, but that would go into spoilers!)WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE (AS MUCH)Adults are Absent or in Need of Saving (Once More!)In my review of the last book, I explained how it’s unrealistic that children would be the ones saving the day without help from any adults. This still holds true. However, I do appreciate how Xander is able to work through his issues and mature as a character. Sometimes, we do need to learn the hard way outside of parental guidance. And I appreciate his parents’ love and understanding through it all.Quick, Not Well Developed ResolutionSome of the issues are wrapped up too quickly. In particular, there is one big issue that was introduced at the end of the last book and which proves a problem at the beginning of this book. I was expecting to see more development on this issue; however, it was resolved at the end without us seeing Xander work through it. I wish that more attention had been paid to this issue.FINAL THOUGHTSOverall, Xander and the Dream Thief is an enjoyable followup to the first novel. As long-time readers know, I always appreciate a novel with good family relationships and Asian characters. I especially love how this novel isn’t another episodic adventure in Xander’s life but incorporates elements from Momotaro #1. I’m looking forward to seeing where Margaret Dilloway takes us next!

Xander is not doing so well since his last adventure. He's having horrible nightmares every night and not sleeping well. He doesn't know how to respond to his mom showing up after being gone for so many years, but he knows he's angry at her. And everyone keeps telling him to use his powers wisely, but he's tried and angry and he doesn't really care. When he gets an amulet from his Grandmother to call a baku to eat his nightmares, and misuses it, his powers and everyone's dreams are taken away. He must find a way to right his wrongs, deal with his anger and impatience, and free the dreams before the people he love lose the will to live. This was a decent fantasy/mythology adventure follow up to the first book. I find it highly realistic that Xander would be a little power happy (I mean, he's a 12 year old suddenly given massive powers) and angry (it would be hard to swallow suddenly finding out your mom left on purpose and could've visited even if she had good reasons not to). I felt like there could've been better adventures and issues that Xander confronted to deal with his impatience and anger. I liked the way he learned about abusing his power. I felt like that lesson and relating adventure was done very well. The way to deal with anger...well, it may have helped Xander but it didn't seem to have anything to help and tween readers also dealing with anger. I did like him realizing that his pent up anger was hurting him and others, but the way to deal with that wasn't super practical in real life. And I'm not super convinced that Xander's impatience was dealt with (I could think of some better challenges that would more convincingly have taught him patience). I did like meeting all the characters from Japanese mythology. It isn't a mythology I'm super familiar with though I see some of the everyday items related to it around (I live in Asia). Middle graders who enjoy fantasy/mythology adventures should like this one. I personally felt it could be better, but I doubt the target audience will care so much, especially those hungry for some Asian-based mythology fantasy adventures.Notes on content: No language issues (it just says Xander sometimes says things he shouldn't, but not what they are). No sexual content beyond some parents kissing. A menacingly broken nose, and some battles with monsters...which are serious though no really gruesome details.

TED Talks reminds me a little of a book I read decades ago… Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. As I read that book I kept thinking, yes, interesting idea – and another. When I finished, I thought ok good pointers but will it make any difference? Then I played someone who I had never won against in dozens of opportunities and I beat them.Bobby Fischer’s book was one of the first popular books I read that used programmed learning… stepping the reader through a series of painless exercises. I’ve also seen that technique also used in a book that teaches math by setting up the problems faced by Euclid, etc. and giving readers enough clues so they too can reach their own aha moments. While TED Talks doesn’t use programmed learning, it is very painless reading, packed with lots of good ideas. You may not come away and be able to deliver a TED Talk right away but you will come away with at least several new ideas on how to improve your ability to get your message across in group settings.Anyone who has seen several TED Talks knows there is no one way to deliver the talks but the book has plenty to say about what generally doesn’t work and what does. I’ll just hit on a few that struck me as helpful:• Don’t give a sales pitch. The speaker’s job is to give to the audience, not to take.• Sometimes it takes a little demolition before changing minds. Example: In ancient societies, a third of men died violent deaths. Modern media plays up violence because that’s what sells. We've changed. After crushing their stereotypes, now you can go onto your points.• Take your audience down your own path of discovery. By asking them to join the process, they get more involved.• Make sure your words and images work together.• Don’t leave a slide up once you are finished with it. Better to put up a blank screen to avoid distraction.• Transitions in Keynote should be kept simple. Cut when shifting to a new idea. Dissolve when slides are related. Dazzle distracts.• Most TED speakers memorize and then practice so much it sounds spontaneous.• Wrinkled clothes telegraph you don’t try. If you don't care, why should they?• Breathe deeply, take your power pose. Be sure to hydrate.• Keep your notes by your water. When you grab a drink, you can quickly glance at where you are. Notes can be there if you need them. Hopefully, you won't.I’m sure you’ll come up with your own list of tips from this very helpful book.

A friend told me about this book as I was in the midst of preparing for a TEDx talk. I picked it up with the same enthusiasm a 5th grader has for homework: "Guess we have to do this now, siiiigh." It turned out to be a compelling enough read to have me blaze through it in one sitting, way past my bedtime. As head of TED, not only has Chris Anderson seen a lot of extraordinary speakers, but also a lot of terrible ones. So he knows the ingredients of both great and mediocre speaking, and how to transform the latter into the former. He presents a highly structured framework useful for beginners all the way to seasoned professionals:• Foundation: presentation literacy; idea building; common traps to avoid; and the all-important throughline• Talk Tools: connection; narration; explanation; persuasion; revelation• Preparation: visuals; scripting; run-throughs; the open and the close• On Stage: wardrobe; mental prep; setup; voice and presence.Anderson does a particularly deft job of explaining the throughline concept and emphasizing its importance. So many talks and pitches miss this point, consequently making only a fraction of their potential impact. What holds together the disparate elements of the talk? Without a clear throughline, listeners may never take any of your lovely ideas home with them. The advice in this book ranges from the lofty and overarching -- e.g. a show of vulnerability brings the audience to your side -- to the technical and specific -- e.g. busy patterns on shirts come out looking funny on video. You may want to speak your talk and transcribe *that* instead of writing it out first. As a professional speaker and speaking coach, I really appreciate how Anderson has compiled many trade secrets that are understood unconsciously but haven't necessarily been articulated all in one spot. And the illustrative examples drawn from all-time greatest TED talks -- Sir Ken Robinson, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jill Bolte-Taylor -- are alone worth the price of admission. If you are a professional speaker or an aspiring one, this is a supremely useful reference. I applaud that one of the main themes of the book is to *serve your audience*. If you only do that, all your talks can only improve. And special thanks to Chris, for being kind enough to release this book just in time for my 3rd TEDx talk :)-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., Speaking Coach & Pitch Doctor, KNP Communications; author, The Tao of Dating: The Smart Woman's Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible, the highest-rated dating book on Amazon for 4+ years

Some books are easy to imagine exploding into narrative form from an Author's lifetime of work. Then there are the books that probably took years of cajoling from well intentioned friends before they finally come to fruition. This book seems like the latter. In a quiet signature style, TED founder Chris Anderson takes readers behind the scenes of some of the most well known moments from the iconic TED stage and what it took for those speakers to get there. Before TED Talks, the idea of a 17 minute non-fiction talk going "viral" with millions of views would have been unheard of. The point this book makes over and over again is that this is the real power of a great talk in the right moment. It can turn companies around and inspire people like nothing else. The premise of delivering an actual TED talk may seem like the most intimidating way to try and improve your speaking skills. The vaunted position TED talks take in our consciousness could make it seem like an unapproachable ideal. Yet reading this book, the one belief that comes through loud and clear is that being a powerful speaker is a skill that is within reach for anyone. Rather than sharing a secret formula for an ideal TED talk, Anderson offers tips and techniques that TED speakers use, but which could be applied for anyone. Aside from having delivered 2 TEDx talks myself, I also currently teach storytelling and speaking at Georgetown University. I will be recommending this book to my students - and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an actionable and entertaining book on becoming a more persuasive speaker as well.
