About the Author

For 37 years Jim Garland worked with children ages 5 to 11 as an elementary physical education teacher. For more than 20 years he coordinated summer soccer camps and clinics for Motion Concepts Summer Camps, where he coached teams from beginning to high school levels. As an undergraduate at Towson University in Maryland, Garland earned Most Valuable Player and All Conference Awards for two consecutive years. In 1970 he was selected as Senior Athlete of the Year. He was inducted into the Towson University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985. Garland earned his master’s degree from Morgan State University in Baltimore in 1978. He earned a National Soccer Coaches license from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 1998 and a doctorate in youth and child studies from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1999. Garland has been an Olympic Development Soccer Program assessor for the state of Maryland and a featured clinician at the local, state, and national levels. He has been a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America; Maryland Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Recreation; American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Recreation; United States Physical Education Association; and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

A very good book. My only complaint is that what I would consider to be a variation on an exercise, they counted as a completely different exercise. It would be nicer to see this woven together more. Still, very practical and easy to understand for youth soccer. I wouldn't use much of this beyond U13 unless the players are new to the game.

This book has been poorly written and it is not recommended for any age group.Most of the drills are useless to teach soccer skills.Other drills are so basic that probably a kid learns more if he/she is left alone with a ball.Drills to increase physical fitness lacks creativity and probably will drive your players away from practice.I purchased this item at Amazon. There are good alternatives out there. I have been a youth soccer coach for over 3 years and did not find anything that I could use here.

Lots of practical drills for a new coach to plement.

What an awesome resource! A few years ago, I was trying to find a book to help me teach my children how to play soccer. This book wasn't around, but I wish it was. I homeschool and I am going to use some of these drills for our outdoor exercise time because they're great for teaching kids about personal space and other kids of space as it relates to soccer. I think that several of the drills in this book would be particularly helpful for kids with autism and other issues with understanding personal space. I have a friend who's son is autistic and I know she is often reminding him and working to help him understand how to give others personal space. I think the exercises in this book could help a lot of coaches with younger teams and particularly if their players struggle with space. In the case of my girls' team, one of the boys is always punching other kids and getting in their space. I think several of the drills could really help that kid...I've watched as the coaches on my son's team have started out trying to figure out how to coach since they're brand new to coaching soccer to kids under 8. This book would be invaluable to coaches in the same position that they are. The drills break down the skills kids need to learn and grab hold of.I highly recommend this book if you are new to coaching soccer and I suspect that even if you've been coaching kids a while, it may give you some new ideas that you can add to your players' practices!

One of the most difficult things for coaches is to find drills all in one spot. No, I not a coach, but have tried to scout on many different types of drills on the Internet for an assortment of sports for young people. The nice thing about this particular book and another by the same publisher about baseball is that it’s not all cluttered up with extraneous material. There’s nothing more aggravating than to have to wade one’s way though piles of material to find the basics.Each chapter is prefaced with some conversational introductory material pertinent to the topic at hand. For example in the “Dribbling Drills” chapter, Garland discusses why working through the subsequent drills “will enable players to keep the ball longer, penetrate the defense, create spaces for passing and shooting, and relieve defensive pressure.” Very clear-cut line drawings accompany each drill in the chapter.The drills are consistently set up with the purpose in mind, the skill level, equipment you’ll need, the time the drill will take, the procedure, key points, related drills, etc. Instead of variations, we’re referred to other related drills in the book. There are numerous informative line drawings that help illustrate the setup when necessary. Most drills are pretty straightforward and addition of drawings are unnecessary and would only manage to clutter up the pages.Having a large, comprehensive number of drills all in one book is perfect for the home or school coach. Individual players will also find these to be quite helpful. Skills are incorporated into drills for spatial concepts and movement, dribbling, passing and collecting, heading, and shooting. I’ve scouted out some plays on YouTube, which could be a supplement to some of these drills. This book is truly a masterpiece. My daughters love it and so do I but probably for different reasons. They enjoy the sweet, funny story of the girl who knits sweaters for everyone and everything in her little town and then triumphs against a mean archduke with a long mustache in the end. Good stuff.I love the book too because it has so many layers; it is easy for adults to appreciate the yarn as a metaphor for happiness. Klassen's powerful illustrations show us a dark, snow-covered landscape at the start of the book. Then Annabelle finds the box of yarn amidst this dreary backdrop and sets about knitting sweaters for everyone. We see her kindness and joy transform the bully, Nate, and his dog and her grumpy teacher, Mr. Norman, and the rowdy class. We see the people she knits sweaters for attached to each other by strands of yarn. People look happier and connected. The landscape brightens. Then the archduke enters and tries to buy her happiness and then tries to steal it but of course that does not work. Then he tries to curse her so she will suffer from the same lack of happiness that plagues him and his family but of course that does not prevent her happiness from finding her again. I love that message and I love this book.

If you are a knitter then you should get this book. I first saw it in my local yarn shop. It is about a little girl who, in the middle of winter, finds a box filled with yarn of every color, so she knits herself a sweater. When she was done she had extra yarn so she knit a sweater for her dog, Mars. Annabelle ends up knitting sweaters for just about everyone in town, except for Mr. Crabtree, who just didn't wear sweaters. He got a hat instead. News of Annnabelle and her extra yarn spread and a cheeky Archduke tried to buy Annabelle's box of yarn. Well, she refused his offer. Rebuffed, he hires robbers to steal the box of yarn from her. The story ends well, however, for Annabelle. My daughter loves this story and Jon Klassen's illustrations are as good as ever. The text is simple and fun to read. This is an awesome bedtime story for all young children and parents alike.

I love this book. I saw Mac read it at an event, and as my son got a little older, I bought it for him. He's 18 months, but the illustrations are wonderful, and reading the book with many voices (as Mac did) keeps him very entertained. There are many little themes just under the surface of the cute story, to me it mostly comes out as a story about selfless sharing and love. Anyway, highly recommend this book.

Bought this for my toddler as I am an avid knitter and we both loved it. I totally won't mind if it becomes one of those bedtime stories that I read a thousand times. He loved seeing the town go from black and white to hand-knit rainbow as the book progressed. It has some good lessons in it, too: confidence, generosity, using your talent to enrich your community, knowing something that has worth beyond monetary value; all the stuff that goes over little kids' heads. The illustrations are clean, simple, and tell the story just as well as the words.

I recently enjoyed an economics presentation for elementary teachers. Not only is Extra Yarn an engrossing picture book, it is also an easy one to use with teaching economics to primary students. My second graders enjoy a good "yarn," they learn basic economics, and they understand writing at a deeper level.

I adore this book. My father got my children a copy from a book signing with Mac Barnett and I purchased this for a friends shower. It's a wonderful story, beautifully and simply illustrated.

Introduced this book at 2.5 years and kids LOVED it, finally bought it as a Christmas present!! About a little girl that finds a box that provides endless yarn for her to knit sweaters, hats, etc for everyone she comes across in her town, she even knits sweaters for buildings and trees and never runs out of yarn! At one point an EVIL Archduke tries to offer the little girl millions of dollars for her endless box of yard and she refuses.................really a book about spreading kindness, and how a simple act can make a difference.Love the story, the characters and the illustrations!! Can't say enough good about this book!

I like Mac Barnett a lot but I LOVE Jon Klassen. Klassen tends to use earth tones in his illustrations, which is no exception here. However when a basket full of colorful yarn is discovered, Barnett's world gets a lot more colorful! With a never-ending supply of yarn, everyone in the town gets a new sweater, including trees, mailboxes, and more. It's a great story about friendship, happiness, and sharing.

Unlike anything I've ever read about the war (and I've read a ton). Written in 1947, Junge tells her story of living daily with Hitler right up to the day of his suicide, completely without guile or pretense. Later, as is revealed in the preface and afterword, she suffered from guilt and depression, but the narrative itself is that of a naive young woman recounting in affecting detail everything surrounding her most peculiar situation. There is a clarity about her telling that I think could have come from no other source. This turned out to be much more interesting than I expected. It contrasts markedly, for example, with the book by von Below, which reads like an objective textbook. This book is written by a recognizable human being, as hard as that can be to square with the circumstances. The details really set the scene, and can be strange, like one of Hitler's monologues on evolution she describes, or witnessing Eva Braun smoking outside the bunker (a big no-no as far as Hitler was concerned).A genuinely interesting book. True, like most of these memoirs, the author gives no hint of knowing about the worst activities of the regime. I don't know what to say about that, but she herself said something interesting, many years later, in an interview which you might be able to find online. She's talking here about one of the college students in the White Rose opposition to Hitler:"One day, I walked past a plaque on the Franz-Joseph Straße (in Munich), on the wall in memory of Sophie Scholl. I could see that she had been born the same year as I, and that she had been executed the same year I entered into Hitler’s service. And, at that moment, I really realised that it was no excuse that I had been so young. I could perhaps have tried to find out about things."

Traudl didn’t say but her friendly and naive personality must have helped. She fit in well with the others. She also wasn’t tempted or compromised by working with hundreds of young & not so young soldiers.From around December 1942 to April 1945, about 2 1/2years, Traudl Humps Junge worked for Hitler & saw him/interacted with him just about daily. The Hitler she “knew” was not the raving mad man we have been led to believe he was. He had an almost unwavering unassailable certainty in the infallibility of his own prejudices, theories, and abilities. He could be kind to people close to him even while he could be merciless to others.

Wow, this was an inside look at the day to day work of secretariesat the mobile headquarters of the Third Reich. Traudi was 25 andvery sheltered. She saw Hitler as a good boss, a nice man witha sensitive stomach. Because of his high pressure job and theirisolated surroundings he needed to socialize in the evenings with hissubordinates and co-workers to unwind. His tastes were rather primand he expected his women secretaries to behave and dress withtotal decorum. He treated them with respect and care. His onlyconcession was to Eva Braun who is regarded as something of aclothes horse and flashier dresser than they were allowed to be. Eva'sexplanation was that she was trying to keep his spirits up. This girlwho saw Hitler's chiefs coming and going on a daily basis and wasclose by during the assassination attempt writes her memoirs laterin life with the gained knowledge of the horrors of the Holocaust, etc.

I'm giving this book five stars because I have discovered quite a lot from reading it. The way it was written caused me to feel as though I was right there, in which I experienced a sense of suspense during my reading of the moments right up to the very end of the Third Reich. I especially appreciated the special attention to details. I have read many books about Holocaust survivors and the inhumane conditions that Jews had to endure, as well as the horrific ways millions of them were murdered. This would be the very first account of the Nazi Party members, but especially Hitler's close entourage, that I've read which gave an inside look of their day to day lives, conditions as it were for them up to the very last moments before the Russian invasion. I absolutely despise the National Socialist Party for their role in bringing about Hitler's sickening 'Final Solution'. I just find it interesting the way the Party members continued to follow such an obvious criminal regime, without thinking for themselves. Then to witness their beloved leader to go out like a coward. What a slap in the face that must have been. Anyone interested in history and especially WWII will find this book to be very enlightening and informative.

Ian Millhiser is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and the editor of ThinkProgress Justice. He received his JD from Duke University and clerked for Judge Eric L. Clay of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. His writings have appeared in a diversity of publications, including the New York Times, the Guardian, the Nation, the American Prospect, and the Yale Law & Policy Review. I just want to point out that very few of the bad reviews (including just 1 of 9 that gave the book a single star) are by verified purchasers, nor do they advance actual critiques of the book or its arguments. The idea that the author is expressing some deep-seated hatred for the American working class is patently absurd; as the title suggests, his point is that, for most of its history, the Supreme Court struck down labor laws and other legislation aimed at protecting workers, Africans Americans, and others "afflicted" by injustice. As he shows, the Court's willful misreading of the 14th Amendment, which turned it into an instrument of big business, is especially egregious.

This books is clearly written and the historical context of the periods is a very nice touch. With many works we are told a given decision souly in a modern context without the context of different factions at that time. Or at least some of the factions in power, in this case legal views by conservatives on the supreme court and the well to do. I think the context is helpful to set up the information and decisions.The book is laid out temporally and focuses particularly on some of the biggest/worse decisions the SCOTUS has made based on some strained readings of the Constitution or by weighting some sections to much at the expense of others to fit ideology. These include various measures to protect monopolies by the court, legalize child labor, prevent safety regulation of nearly any kind, battles with Roosevelt and so on.Some may agree with some of these decisions in terms of ideological free market sorts of reasons, but in a full context reading it is hard not to say that many on the Court at this time were biased not by the law but their own views. This is still likely true and always will be whether you agree with the court or not, but it is nicer if they act to protect people that need protecting instead of protecting those already with vast power and resources.

This is a thoroughly entertaining and well written overview, presented in a style that's easily accessible to the layperson, of the Supreme Court's checkered history and performance in the century-and-a-half since Reconstruction. Mr. Millhiser persuasively demonstrates how business interests, aided by sympathetic Justices on the nation's highest court, co-opted the 14th Amendment, which was obviously intended to address the aftermath of slavery and give an abused people true dignity and a real opportunity at self-determination, so that its primary impact was to provide corporate interests with a previously unknown, constitutionally guaranteed, "freedom of contract." What this meant in practice is that the Supreme Court, during it's so-called Lochner era, repeatedly struck down legislation, implemented by the people's representatives in Congress, intended to prevent child labor and perilous working conditions, among other things.Milhiser's thesis is that the Lochner era, which was arguably ended by the threat of Roosevelt's court-packing scheme (although Milhiser, who knows history better than I do, says that it was a fortuitous change of heart that changed the Court's balance, instead), was not an aberration. He demonstrates how arguments carrying the day in several recent Supreme Court decisions,for example, including the Hobby Lobby decision and the decision that stopped just a hairsbreadth short of invalidating the Affordable Care Act, are essentially the same as those that undergirded the Lochner Court's activism in an era where the Court felt free to invalidate any legislation that it considered unwise. Of course, even the novice student of of our Constitutional structure understands that this is not the role assigned to the Court.Does Milhiser approach this material from a progressive/liberal perspective? Unquestionably. Does that diminish the value of his contribution to our understanding of the Supreme Court's actual role in our history? Not one whit, in my opinion. One doesn't have to agree with Howard Zinn's political worldview, for example, to acknowledge that his "A People's History of the United States" has done much to ensure that students of history today are provided with a much more nuanced, and much more realistic,view of our nation's history than the Columbus-was-awesome-and-it-has-gotten-better-ever-since version of history that we older folks were taught in the 1960's and '70s. While I'm not suggesting that Milhiser's "Injustices" will have a similar impact, especially given the overly distracted times in which we live, I am suggesting that his critical assessment of the Supreme Court as a potentially malignant force is worth serious consideration by thinking people.

Mr. Millhiser does a fantastic job of providing insight and history pertaining to the "esteemed" U.S. Supreme Court. History shows how many of the former and current justices are motivated and influenced by their own ideology, prejudices, and social settings. As Millhiser clearly points out, it is less about the law and more about fitting/shaping the law to meet the justices' preconceived notion, prejudice or ideology. This is not to say that all justices are bad, but it does show the fallibility in our thinking that the Court's opinions are supreme - far from it. As more controversial cases are being brought to the Court, it is required reading to the know history of the Court. Knowing the history will help us understand the failures of when it comes to meeting the needs of all citizens and just not the rich, the powerful, and the dominant White male.Given that the Affordable Care Act ruling is upon, along with marriage equality, this book is required reading to understand the mistakes the U.S. Supreme Court made in taking on these two cases, as well as others in the past.
