Six of us used this to help plan how to divide our time between a two-week trip to England and Scotland last year. In the end, in part because of the many insights this book offered, we thought we'd better not assume we could get a good sense of both countries in such a short time, and so for this trip we decided we'd only sample Scotland by visiting Edinburgh for a few days. This book helped us plan that visit well, with interesting commentary on the many ways we could spend our time.Maybe it's just the way my brain works when planning a trip, but the reason I didn't give five stars was the way the book is organized. By grouping things primarily by categories rather than primarily by geography, it seemed I had to spend a lot more time with the book to find answers while on a very narrow visit like we had. Others may not find this a frustration, though, especially if you have plenty of time for planning, and like to make sure you structure your visit with very specific experiences in mind.

It was time for a new one, and I didn't hesitate. This and our old Taste of Scotland book are what we use as guides (as well as the Undiscovered Scotland website). This is not a guide book per se, but rather provides some very accurate descriptions/ratings of hotels, restaurants, pubs, etc. We have always found Irvine's recommendations accurate and worth taking. We use this rather than a guide book frankly, but we have been to Scotland many times, which might make the difference.

Bought this based on reviews. If you are touring planning on hitting the top tourist locations, this is your book. We were touring to see the country, not visiting a city larger than Inverness, and that for a morning. Spent 5 weeks seeing the highlands, and perhaps used this book two or at most 3 times.

We have traveled to Scotland for almost 40 years now - yikes. We learned about places and experiences there by talking to people met along the way and hunches about what to do and see. This book proved to be good reading - maybe too much at times, providing worthwhile suggestions of places and things to do off the beaten track. The accommodation suggestions were often good starting points for finding places to spend several nights at a time. One hotel suggestion - with the author's disclaimer that he had not stayed there himself, but heard good reports proved to be a version of Faulty Towers - with enough quirkiness to fill a book. Beverage cans, bits of litter, broken window frame, and peeling paint at the entrance - omg - wood paneling, sparkling crystal chandelier in the lobby, holes in the carpet, hallway with no ceiling - open wires ("we are in the middle of renovations..."), a spacious, clean well appointed room with large windows and new pristine en suite bathroom, superb fish for supper cooked by the wife/partner...Susie the sheepdog mascot - highlight of the journey. Need to investigate if author maintains a web site for updates. If he doesn't, it is a good idea.

I have bought every edition of Scotland the Best since 1998, and I find it totally addictive. Let's be clear - the book is a personal selection of the author's favorite places in Scotland. If you don't already know Scotland, you'll do better with a Fodor or Lonely Planet guidebook to give you the background and orientation. However, if you want a list of great places to guide your travels then this is a great book. It includes gardens, churches, mountains, prehistoric sites and castles as well as the obvious restaurants and hotels.

fall 2016 trip to scotland -- I bought this book beforehand but had a much deeper appreciation for it ON the trip. There are maps in the back that have the locations of all the "Best" places -- which i didnt find right away, but made all the difference.

Briefly, this is probably the book that most Scots would buy when traveling around Scotland. I want the books that most Americans would buy and which do not need an interpreter. It's most likely a great insider's guide, but I'm an outsider.

This is a well researched and very comprehensive guide--best for places to stay and places to eat but also good for picking out the best sites to see and good walks. We found it very useful every day of our trip.

Brilliant man, but flawed thinking. As Jonathan Culler and other collaborators in the book point out, Eco arguably contradicts himself in his theories, but hey, it just makes analyzation that much more fun for a cynical theorist!

When reading a text, how much does what the author intended count for, if anything? Is there any way to tell what a text "really" means, or can it be read however you like for whatever purpose you like? Simple as they seem, these are the fundamental questions this book is concerned with, and it is Eco's task to explain why he thinks there should be limits to interpretation - against the prevailing opinions of many modern critics and thinkers.The book is laid out in eight sections. The first is the Introduction, which is substantial. If you're in the habit of skipping the introduction I would advise against it here, unless you consider yourself thoroughly familiar with the subject - it's helpful.The next three sections consist of a series of lectures Eco gave on this subject, where he establishes his main points. It's quite accessible to the layman, and in the few places where the terms get a bit obscure you can usually figure out what he's talking about from the context. He uses several historical examples which keep things interesting, and his arguments are interesting whether you find them convincing or not.Essays by Rorty, Culler and Brooke-Rose in response to these lectures make up the next part. Rorty, a self-described "pragmatist", makes the argument that we shouldn't concern ourselves with what makes a "valid" interpretation, and instead just use texts as they come before us for whatever purpose suits us best. Culler, coming from the side of the deconstructionists, argues that what Eco calls "overinterpretation" has a value of its own and reacts strongly to the implication that there should be any limits whatsoever imposed upon the critic. Brooke-Rose's piece on "palimpsest history" is not uninteresting but somewhat tangential, and you really have to stretch things to relate it to the argument going on between Eco, Rorty and Culler.The wrap-up section is a response from Eco, mostly addressing Rorty's points though dealing somewhat with Culler's objections. There is no clear "winner", and you may not be swayed to Eco's point of view if you found one of the others more compelling, but there is ample food for thought.

Umberto Eco's discussion of interpretation and overinterpretation sheds light on several of his fictional works. In the same way, his fictional works help us to better grasp his technical writings. I am thinking especially of Foucault's Pendulum. The lead characters illustrate how the "diabolicals" engage in gross overinterpretation as they try to use historical materials to feed their conspiracy theory construction. The lead characters take all of this a step further, illustrating Eco's technical discussion of how we often move from "interpreting" a text to "using" a text. The lead characters definitely begin "using" the materials gleaned from the work of the diabolicals, reshaping and reforming connections between disparate facts, observations, theories, guesses, and hopes to finally conjure a sort of "super" conspiracy theory that captures the imaginations and jealous desires of the diabolicals. Because of their long-practiced habits of overinterpretation, the so-called Diabolicals are unable to resist the results of the main characters "use" of the texts. They are captured by the occult metatheory that they construct, with disastrous results. The lesson in the story is two-fold, I think. The first is that overinterpretation is irresponsible, risky, and even dangerous because it lacks discipline and self-restraint. It puts you in the position of considering or belieiving whatever reading one chooses to make, as long as there are SOME sorts of connections (real or imagined) to cling to. The second lesson is that the move from "interpretation" of a text to crass "use" of a text is manipulative, seductive, and dangerous in the sort of backlash it can generate among those that do not recognize the sort of interpretive move you have chosen to make. "Using" the work of another in a selfish or self-serving way can be trivializing at best and damaging at worst. Similar illustrations of Eco's work on "use," "interpretation," and "overinterpretation" of texts can be seen in many ways in The Name of the Rose, as well. This is especially true of the main character's interactions with the monks and their interpretations of what is happening in their monastery, including the legendary library, itself. Similar issues are at work with the Inquisitor, as well. I heartily recommend reading Eco's works on semiotics at the same time that you let yourself plunge into his works of fiction. The two help explain one another in a helpful manner.

Being a knot enthusiast, I was immediately interested about this book when I heard about it from a friend. I own several dozen books dedicated to knots and their uses, and while some are better than others, most show what is essentially the same content. Since this book appeared to be a different take on knots, I pre-ordered it from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised when I got the e-mail that it had shipped last Friday. I received it yesterday and proceeded to spend hours reading it and practicing the knots and ties inside. As the name implies, these knots are decorative in nature, and provide a beauty to projects and crafts made in rope or similar mediums. Many of these knots are esoteric, and that is what makes this book stand out from the rest. While every other knot book focuses purely on knots for their function, and there is certainly nothing wrong with that, this is one of the few books to focus almost exclusively on the aesthetic value of knots as an art form in and of themselves. Of all the knot books I own, and the countless other's I've browsed through, I cannot think of any other book like this one. If you are interested in knots or rope in any capacity, or work in any crafts that use cordage, then you must own this book because there is not another title like it!

I have read a lot of knot-tying books. This is the best one I have found specifically for decorative knots and lanyards. This isn't a book for knots to hold things fast (although many knots will work for that) but more for decorative knots and lanyards. I bought the book to further my knot-tying skills beyond the basic sailing knots. I have tied a few braided lanyards and wanted to make a braided hatband. This book taught me so much more than I expected. Well worth the money spent. This will keep me busy for a while.

I got this book because I used to make knotted wall hangings and was thinking about doing it again. This is definitely NOT a beginner's knotting book. The knots are pretty complex, for the most part, but they are also beautiful. The knots are photographed well, so even if you can't figure out what they're talking about, you can follow the photos to achieve the knots you want to do.

If I could give no stars that's exactly what I'd do. The very first knot from which they seem to base the rest of the knots in this book is not completely conveyed in the book. Went over the knot numerous times and followed directions closely the end result is never what's shown in the book. Very dissapointed as this was a gift for my sons and daughter whom have shown an affinity for thing knots. May seek to send book back for a refund😡

Lots of interesting knots. I know they are decorative but most of them collapse or fail to look pretty when being put to real use. I prefer functional knots that are pretty as well.

I like this book, but not as well as his first book. I first found JD on the internet and after tying some of his creations, I had to buy his books. In this book he adds some new twists on some older knots and does so with excellent illustrations. If you're into paracord keychains, bracelets, etc. get his first book. If you want to expand into other knots for Knotboards, etc. then this is the book. Either way, if you are one who appreciates the art of knot tying, you will become a fan of JD Lenzen. Oh yeah, don't forget to go on YouTube and search for some of his insturctional videos. The boy has talent. :-)

I bought this book for more practical application in tying useful things. There are some good and useful knots in it, but overall it is exactly what it says, decorative knot work. The instructions are fabulously laid out and easy to follow. If you know the specific knot your want to work with, go to the you tube videos. If your looking for something unique and you don't have a name for it, this is a good place to find it. These knots can lead you to your own applications. I made a belt with the trilobite knot and it turned out great. I am sure that a lace maker could learn a lot from this book about new and unique patterns and knot tying is a great way to entertain yourself at a boring job.

Ok...FIRST...this book and it's author are BY FAR the best instructional information that is avaliable out there today!. JD'S passion REALLY shows through and the "EYE" view his instruction give...REALLY helps a NOVIS and experienced knot tyer understand the method of fusion knots...it is "KNOT" just about military style knots...IT IS about a person that has instructional skills that allow the end user to really understand what knots are ALL about...yes functional...and yes beauty...but most of all you get what you put into learning about knots. MANY of the listed knots can transition into military and survival applications...but BEYOND that it's the sheer talent of JD that shines through and I would recommend this book HIGHLY to beginners AND the experienced knot tyer...JD is constantly updating and pushing the envelope of knot tying...check his web page and you tube videos and you will agree...

This is the most beautiful wedding decor book I've ever seen. Finally, a wedding book that speaks to the couple who loves modern and colorful design. No shabby chic or rustic or vintage in this book. The DIY ideas are fresh, new, and inspiring. This book would make a great gift for the newly engaged couple who wants a wedding full of color and contemporary decor. Every photograph is this book is eye popping beautiful - I want to frame them all and hang on my wall! Maybe the authors will release some big posters of some of the images?? Hint, Hint. I would definitely buy those for my house.

Of all the wedding decor books I read this was one of my favorites. There are actually ideas and suggestions that you don't typically encounter and it inspired me with new ideas. Great visuals were helpful also.

I got this out of curiosity and was really amazed at the beauty, practical ideas and content. For anyone looking to get some ideas for their wedding this book is a great source. There is something for every taste. I highly recommend it.

The book is lovely, however based on the description I read it sounded like the book would have sections suggesting colour pairings ( for example, if you chose red as your main colour for your wedding, what colours work well to create a tasteful palate) which it does not.

this is great for the bride who wants a modern wedding. however the ones who want a more traditional approach might enjoy The Knot's Look Book instead.

Think outside the box and create your own designs; full of fun, whimsical designs and loving the visual aid.

It was hard to put the book down once I received it, such fascinating colorful information. I love it and it has given me many wonderful ideas to use.

Chang's first cookbook, Flour, is one of my favorite baking cookbooks. But I decided to be cautious before pre-ordering Flour, Too. So I made the recipes that were available on Amazon "search inside this book." These were the available recipes: Classic Apple Turnover, Cinnamon-Creme Brioche, Vegan Vanilla-Mixed Berry Muffins, Brown Sugar-Oat Cherry Muffins, Twice-Baked Brioche, Fabulous French Toast, Decadent Sunday Waffles, CJS Spiced Banana Pancakes, Steel-Cut Oats, and Denise's Dutch Baby. Made all the recipes except for the Vegan Muffins and Twice-Baked Brioche. Here were the results.1. The waffles are decadent and have become the favorite in my household, beating out N. Silverton's sourdough waffles, D. Greenspan's waffles, and the old but reliable I. Rombauer waffles.2. Denise's Dutch Baby is excellent. It is more sophisticated than A. Thomas's German Apple pancake. Would make a good dessert.3. The French Toast is fabulous but you must remember to start the night before.4. The cherry muffins turned out wonderful, even with substituting the all-purpose flour for the whole wheat flour. I would make them again, but substitute chopped dates for the cherries next time, just for something different.5. The banana pancakes are fine but prefer plain pancakes using M. Cunningham's recipe in The Breakfast Book (and also repeated in P. Reinhardt's Crust and Crumb.)6. Steel-cut oats are delicious. I have made plain steel-cut oats for years. But based on inspiration from her recipe, I incorporate cinnamon and nutmeg to the milk, water, brown sugar, and salt and bring to boil before adding the oats and cook for about 15-20 minutes. The spices add a warmth to the cereal. And whenever I have pears, usually Dánjou, I cook them as stated in the recipe. They are a delicious addition.7. The apple turnovers are superb. Just a note, I did not use J. Chang's puff pastry recipes because I already had some puff pastry from an N. Silverton recipe. Either way, definitely try. (N. Silverton's apple turnovers are, also, excellent. Better yet try the Lemon Turnovers in her book Pastries From the La Brea Bakery but use J. Chang's Lemon Curd. Delicious.)8. The Cinnamon-Creme Brioche was sublime. Heavenly may be the way to describe these treats. J. Chang's brioche recipe is my favorite and most reliable brioche. All her recipes using her brioche dough are wonderful, and I even use it when other cookbooks call for brioche, e.g. C. Hitz's Lemon Brioche Doughnuts (a must try, along with his Gibassier).My one complaint about the cookbook would be that liquid measurements were given only by volume, both U.S. and metric, and not by weight. For those of us who cook by weight, we must do the conversions.When reviewing the Vegan Vanilla-Mixed Berry Muffins recipe, I noticed either the volume or weight for the flour seems to be incorrect, or at least not consistent with the flour conversions in the other recipes. The cookbook Flour did not have this problem. Hopefully, this is the only recipe in Flour, Too with this discrepancy. (10 June 2013 NOTE: This discrepancy has been corrected for both the book and search inside. Must have caught it before the printing. Good editing!)I would have liked to try some savory recipes but unfortunately none was available.And again, whatever you do, make the Cinnamon-Creme Brioche.PS: Disclaimer: I have never been to any of J. Changs bakeries or restaurant.6 June 2013Received cookbook today. Had a chance to look it over but not to cook from it.Layout is basically the same as her first cookbook, flour, with one important exception: the ingredient list is easier to read because the typeface is bold, not normal weight. I still wish for black ink instead of gray ink. Quality printing. Well bound, sewn binding. Professional photos. Just like Flour, the directions are clear and concise and the stories are a nice short read. Well written and thought out.Reviewed the brioche, pastry cream, and lemon curd recipes, listed in the Basics chapter. Exactly or nearly the same as before, which is good, because they are excellent recipes.Kosher salt is used in both cookbooks. In her first cookbook, she notes under the ingredients chapter that "You can use table salt if you don't have kosher salt, but only use about half the amount called for." I did not see this very important note in flour, too.10 June 2013Tried two savory dishes with two positive outcomes.The first savory dish was Christopher's Oven-Baked Potato And Red Pepper Tortilla, aka frittata. Having crisp potatoes cooked with smoked paprika is a nice variation. Would recommend serving it with a green sauce such as the one that accompanies the Summer Squash Frittata in D. Madison's The Greens Cook Book. The Tortilla would be an excellent meal for guests, because it can be made ahead of time and is just as good cold as hot.The second savory dish was Vegan Carrot And Ginger soup. I like carrots but have not found a good carrot soup. Until today. The soup is hearty and delicious. Roasting carrots did make the them sweeter. Thanks J. Chang. And thanks for the tip on freezing ginger.And of course, tried one sweet recipe. Decided to make the Maple-Apple Upside-Down Buttermilk Cake because it was straightforward and could be eaten about 1 hour after it was baked. Another winner. J. Chang recommends to eat this cake warm. Actually, we thought it was even better the next day.Highly recommend

I have Joanne Chang's first Flour cookbook, and live three blocks away from her first bakery -- she now has four of them scattered around Boston/Cambridge. I am 'currently reading' this second one, but have already determined that this will be a go-to cookbook that gets heavy use.The first cookbook, I am quite sure, has made me a better baker. Her directions are clear, the recipes really work, and she demystifies a lot of processes and techniques. But this one is even better: it also has FOOD!! Not just baked goods. Luscious salads, soups, sandwiches and some main courses (not a ton, but the ones I see look very good). I have already made the white gazpacho and cannot wait to make more of the delicious-sounding soups as winter approaches, and the salads look absolutely terrific. (I am about to look for 'nigella seeds' -- something I never heard of before, because two of the salad recipes call for them.) Another plus to this cookbook, besides spelling out techniques, is that she includes a series of foundation recipes at the back -- soup stocks, the focaccia dough that creates the bread for all her sublime sandwiches, for example, and the roasted plum tomatoes that make her BLTs a standout even in the dead of winter.Many of the recipes from the first Flour cookbook are in heavy rotation at my house. Every cookie recipe is excellent, and the almond macaroons with ganache filling are made probably every 1-2 weeks because my friends LOVE them. In this sequel cookbook she gives the recipe for the fancier macarons -- the kind sold by French luxury patisseries like Payard and Ladurée -- so I'll have to try those too.I can definitely recommend both Flour cookbooks, and if you're in Boston, go visit any of her Flour cafés, or Myers+Chang, her low-key Asian restaurant. Even though I love to cook, I go to Flour because the atmosphere is just plain happy. And that is reflected in Chang's writing -- she has found what she loves to do.

Absolutely worthless in planning a trip along Route 66 unless you only want to know about the major cities along the route. I bought this book just as it was released so there were no previous reviews. I like most Lonely Planet books and have probably bought 100 of them in the past 25 years. This is the worst one I've bought. It is very superficial and minimally useful for planning a trip (which I'm doing now) along Route 66 and I certainly won't waste the space to take it with me. In reality, it is mainly a book that describes the larger cities along the route (Chicago, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Santa Fe, Flagstaff, LA) with a bit of information about the other sites along the route. I'll go over the Arizona information as an example. The Arizona chapter consists of a description of Flagstaff and the surrounding areas along with an inset about the Grand Canyon. A total of 10 pages in the Arizona chapter! And almost only about Flagstaff. And much of that is devoted to worthless things like the fact that there is a Macy's and a Whole Food market in Flagstaff. Not likely to be of much interest for those looking for a Route 66 "experience." Granted, there is the additional section with 4 pages for Arizona at the beginning but this is still a very superficial description of the highlights of the route. The author could have written this highlight section in an hour from the internet without having been anywhere neat the route. I would strongly suggest people not bother with this book. I'm sure there are much better options.

Not very helpful. Spend your money on a different guide. Did not have any new information than many of the other and much better guides out there and limited information on many Route 66 specific destinations/sights.

This was a fabulous little book about stoppingbpoints along the old Route 66

This was not worth the price not one of lonely planets better books.

Has very good options on traveling, and many places to stop and see

Kicking around the idea of doing the central segment of US Route 66 perhaps this August 2018 - just me and the Cooper S - should be great fun!
