I have a tendency to want to race through the Passion to reach Easter joy. Wangerin's daily devotions have helped me slow down and enter into the sorrow and pain that come before the Resurrection. Recommended.

This book is wonderful to use as a meditation enhancement. Walter Wangerin Jr. relives the passion from his own views. His decriptions brought me to places in meditation that I never traveled before. I felt as if I was with Jesus in Calvery at one point and feeling my own feelings to the passion at another. This was easy reading but intentensly emotionally. I used it as a lenten reflection and loved it.

This book also reminded me that I can do quick, basic mani-pedis at home weekly rather than going to a salon. It's just a matter of working self-care into one's routine. I love that Blanchard's books are so short that I can read them in one sitting. I have the other book by Blanchard, on fashion (I found this one more helpful, but that one was good too). I am about to purchase the one on home-making. I am really enjoying this influence in my life.

Hiram Bingham had the courage to do that and as a result saved over 2,500 lives of Jews and others on Nazi death lists. This book tells the story of Hiram Bingham after he resigned from the Foreign Service in 1945, but also tells about his private life after that time. Also included are posthumous awards for Bingham and the story of his families 7 year campaign to have a postal stamp issued in his honor. I had such a feeling of sadness reading this book and seeing the struggles Bingham went through in his career for the simple reason that he did the right thing in such terrible times. Much of the book is very uplifting though, when Bingham's family finally receives the recognition their father deserved. A great book about a very courageous man.

This is the only published acccount of the story of Harry Bingham, Vice-Consul, at the U.S. Consulate in Marseilles in Vichy France (circa 1940-1942). While working for the consulate Bingham worked with Varian Fry's Emergency Rescue Committee (ERC), American and French Christian refugee relief groups, and Jewish refugee relief and rescue organizations. Harry Bingham and others succeeded in rescuing hundreds (possibly thousands)of refugees(mostly Jewish)from deportation and death. Bingham was villified by the Consul-General in Marseilles and his diplomatic career ruined by the State Department in Washington, when they became aware of his clandestine efforts to provide visas to numbers of desperate refugees. Long after his death, Bingham was finally exonerated and honored by U.S. Secretary of State Collin Powell more that sixty years after his work in Marseilles, France. The book is written by his son and mostly based on a trove of correspondence and papers found in the Bingham home. While not a truly historical work, Courageous Dissent tells a history story that must be told.

This is a fine well researched book on a portion of early 19th Century African exploration by Gordon Laing and other courageousexplorers of from the 1820's . Most of these explorers died by Arab guides or thieves or suffered unbearable hardships fromthe Sahara Desert or disease solely to be the first to reach Timbuktu and discover the source of the Niger River. The author'sability to form a coherent and convincing narrative is truly extraordinary.

The Race for Timbuktu is an interesting history of the fabled city and the Niger River. However, I would suggest that you find some maps of WestAfrica to follow the routes of the various expeditions. I read the e-book version, and like nearly every e-book there are errors in the grammar, and spelling. It is also a slow ponderous read much like the camels crossing the Sahara desert. Much of the book contains correspondence from the expeditions leaders to the British consul in Tripoli, also to tribal leaders, and the French and American consulates. The book captures the characteristics of the time period, people and terrain in much detail, including the ongoing distrust between expedition leaders, tribal leaders, the British, and French personnel. The author also covers the ongoing war of words between the French and British as to who ultimately found Timbuktu first. In the end Timbuktu was not at all the city of golden streets and walls of precious gems, but more like current day Mogadishu. Finally, would I tell a friend this is a must read? No.

A few years ago I was contacted by Deni Cooperrider, who's husband was staying in a hotel in Timbuctu. Bob Coopperrider, her husband, had discovered that the host at the hotel was Miranda Dodd. Now Miranda was the daughter of Terry Dodd who had rented our old house for some years. To a great extent Miranda had grown up on our property and with our books. I knew that she had visited Africa while she was in College, or afterward, but I didn't know that she had married a Timbuctu chieftan and that they had a hotel. Bob Cooperridder and I had collected firewood together in the 70s and shared an old Farmall Cub tractor. Bob was a teacher then but was interested in organic farming. He later edited a Tilth periodical. He eventually retired and found himself helping Africans set up grain cleaning operations and other agricultural functions. At the hotel in Timbuctu, Miranda and Bob found that they had lived on the same road less than a mile apart. When this book became available I thought that perhaps I should know more about Timbuctu. And there was a hint of an ancient library there something like that in Ethiopia, full of ancient scrolls that exist no where else.Well, this book is not about the details of what remains in Timbuctu but about the British search for the source of the Niger River and Timbuctu. Timbuctu is near to and possibly once on the river. Africa was basically closed in the early 1800s to Westerners. And then there was that Sahara Desert to cross. Or maybe one could go up the Niger River from the coast. But no one knew where the Niger River went! This book is about the Brits who died trying to get to Timbuctu and to find the route of the Niger. Mostly they failed and suffered greatly in the process. The excrutiating British hierarchy that created these explorers is well displayed. And this drama takes place in preparation for the colonization of Africa, which followed these explorations, orchestrated by men in plush armchairs in private clubs in London. The book has a great amount of detail about the other men with boots on the ground or on camel back struggling through the sand and rocks, and drinking bad water.

Sit was a good story with footnotes to say where the evidence came from. The author told the story in detail, but in the way a story teller would tell an exciting story and with feeling for the character and places. It brings to life a story that was not well know to our modertime. The stories of Burton,Speke, Livingston, and Stanley are better known because the lived and wrote wonderful books. Now the other side of Africa's exploration by Europeans is brought to our modern times.

This is an excellent and rare historical look at the race by Western powers to control Saharan Africa. It is historically broader than the Gordon tragedy . I bought the Kindle version and, as in most cases, the maps that come with Kindles are less than useful so would suggest either have a map of Northern Africa handy or buy the hardback.

Interesting story and description of Tripoli and its politics in the 1700's. Has anything changed? Incredible that Britain sent out so many adventurers and many came to a sad ending. I also found the descriptions of the slave traders very interesting. It was fairly well written considering the book had to jump around quite a bit between explorers and continents.

I have to admit I never heard of the principles in this book. Back in the 50's and 60's we didn't study a lot of African history. The tales of the explorers were gripping. Well written and very addictive. I didn't like to pick it up unless I could devote a lot of time to it. In one sentence: enjoyed the hell out of it!

Treacherous conditions, strong characters, historical accounts, and great storytelling make this book an exciting read. Puts you there in Africa in the early 1800s.

Two of my favorite women in early British history are Empress Matilda, Henry I only surviving legitimate child and heir the the throne of England and Eleanor of Aquatine, Queen to two Kings as well as mother to two kings. This book is mainly about Matilda and I enjoyed reading it. She had a fascinating life because even though she was the daughter of Henry I, she was treated as property, a brood made that Henry married to Emperor Heinrich of the Holy Roman Empire. Reading about their marriage and how Empress Matilda was treated by her father after Emperor Heinrich passed away is unreal. Empress Matilda helped her husband rule their empire yet her father and the Norman Barons only saw her as a woman.I highly recommend this book. And I look forward to reading the six books before this book.However, I was disappointed that there was not a lot about the time period between "King" Stephen stealing the throne and the war with Empress and true Queen of England Matilda and Stephen naming Matilda's son Henry as his heir. That, in my opinion, is the most interesting time as it is also the beginning of the Plantagenet Dynasty.A great follow up book would be Eleanor of Aquatine but unfortunately that hasn't happened. Yet!I was provided a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

I loved this book! It was informative, well written, and I learned much that I had never known about Matilda of England, daughter of Henry I Plantagenet, King of England, and the granddaughter of Malcolm III Canmore, King of Scots. It isn't overly long and is actually easy to read. One doesn't get bogged down in a lot trivia, but the historical characters are brought to vivid life. Margaret, who was my 23rd gr-grandmother, grew from an intelligent child to an intelligent woman, married at age 8 to Henry V who was to become the Holy Roman Emperor and she its Empress as well as the King and Queen of Germany. The charts, lineage and timeline of people and events at the end help one to better understand the history of that far away era. The only fault I found was that a little more attention to the editing would have been helpful. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, so I could give an honest review. I did that.

I got this from the library out of curiosity. I read maybe 20 pages and skimmed the rest. I'd have read more, but it was unreadable.Hundreds of pages of imaginary concepts with absolutely nothing to tether them to reality or science.The lies start on the the cover, which refers to the subject as a science. If it's science, where are the studies? Where are the peer-reviewed journal articles? The replication studios? Heck, any studies at all? The statistics, the control groups, anything?Hubbard repeatedly refers to studies in this book, but there are no footnotes to studies, no bibliography, no data another that a couple of silly charts.There are a few ridiculous equations with nothing to back them. Hubbard doesn't even claim that he personally did experiments or name anyone who did studies, he just writes "The studies conclusively showed" and loves the passive voice "... was shown by studies ..." This isn't science, it's just hand waving and not even particularly good hand waving. It's full of made-up concepts like "engrams" with no evidence to back them. In addition to the overwhelming about of nonsense, at times he makes flat-out false statements. (The book claims that the mind records things perfectly and that all experiences can be recalled, or relived, with perfect fidelity. Um, no, memory is quite fragile and changes over time as memories are recalled and laid back down.)The book wasn't even good for more than a couple of laughs. It depresses me to think that this was a best-seller and people thought it was useful as self-help or -- gulp -- science, since it's so obviously a complete fiction from cover to cover.

Pure ridiculousness. I had to read this for a class, I now know for certain the professor is a secret Scientologist. Makes a fantastic doorstop though.

I don't like the presence of this book in my room. hahaha, was recommended by somebody, now I realized it's a test hahahahaha!

This book is terribly written. It is pure fiction pretending to be science. Sad to know that so many have been fooled into joining a cult and throwing their lives away over the author and his creative imagination.

Was not who I expected! But a very interesting book on one man's opinion of why,how and who is in charge of the inside mechanics of one'mind, & body!!

I pre-ordered this book based on the blurb alone; it sounded like a good domestic/psychological thriller. Had I known it was part of a detective series, I would’ve skipped it.Still, I tried. Amid mounting cliches and mistakenly attributing “More Than A Feeling” to REO Speedwagon (cringe), I tried. But ultimately, I couldn’t press on .... too many cliches, too juvenile-sounding, too boring, too formulaic.For fans of this author — as well as detective series books — it might be an enjoyable read. Just not my thing, and I wish there had been some indication that this actually isn’t a stand-alone domestic thriller.

Laurie & Robert have a toxic marriage. Laurie is the victim of years of psychological abuse. One afternoon, she overhears Robert talking lovingly on the phone. He wants a divorce, so he can marry his mistress with whom he fathered a child. (Their daughter is 7 months old.) That day, Laurie has a major meltdown & publicly outs his affair at a neighborhood barbecue. They've been living apart, ever since.One day, she's expecting him to come over but he doesn't show. While she's waiting for him, she drinks an entire bottle of vodka, some wine & prosecco and she blacks out. When she comes to, she's lying on the bed & she's covered in blood. She has no recollection of going upstairs. She finds her estranged husband dead in the guest bathroom of their home with his throat savagely cut, his head almost decapitated and he's been stabbed 18 times in the chest & stomach. He was slaughtered. She calls the police & when they arrive, she's intoxicated & incoherent. It appears as if a spurned wife took revenge on a cheating husband. It has all the hallmarks of a crime of passion. But, the lead detective intuits there's more to it than meets the eye.Her best friend Monica had introduced Robert to Laurie. Laurie & Monica have known each other since they were teens. Monica tells the detective about an auto accident that Laurie had about a year ago. She was 8 months pregnant with twins, when she discovered Robert's infidelity. She was in a terrible state, crying, hysterical, hormonal, heavily pregnant, devastated & in total despair. She had been driving down to where he was working to confront him, when she lost control of her vehicle & careened off the road. It took them nearly 6 hours to pull her out of the wreck. She was barely alive, when they finally got her free. She suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a shattered collarbone & internal bleeding. They weren't able to save the twins; a girl & a boy. She completely unraveled. She had a mental breakdown & still suffers from a deep, dark, debilitating depression. She was prescribed antidepressants, sedatives, a cocktail of prescription drugs AND she self-medicates with alcohol.Someone murdered Robert. Perhaps, that someone is her. But, she can't remember. And, just because she had a motive & found the body doesn't mean that she's the killer.Robert was a womanizer; a sexual predator. So, they can't rule out a jealous husband or boyfriend, or even a lover. Early on in the investigation, it's perfectly clear that Laurie is being framed. Someone has set her up. But, who & why remain a mystery.Fragments of her memory return. She remembers being carried up the stairs & the person who was carrying her was wearing perfume. Someone else was in the house on the day Robert was murdered. She is sure of it. But, no one will believe her. Her DNA is all over the murder weapon, she had motive & opportunity, a history of depression & mental illness, there was no sign of a break-in, no evidence of 3rd party...It all comes out in court. Monica & Robert are brother & sister. Their incestuous relationship began when Monica was only 13. Their chosen method of birth control is abortion. Monica has had 6 or 7. It's a sordid, deviant story. ICKY!!!

This was a good book..but I give it four stars because there was something I didn't like...I had this book figured out half way through and knew exactly who was the bad guy here because the author completely gave it away. I don't like that. Not that early anyways. I kind of thought that was a bit of a let down.

Another disappointment from the recent onslaught of trendy Brits falling far short in attempts to clone The Girl on the Train. The biggest mystery of this book is the questionable glowing reviews that lure in hapless readers. The plot never thickens, the characters are predictably two dimensional and the writing has no depth. As for its ‘unpredictable’ conclusion, any mystery buff can figure that out in the opening chapters. What’s most tiring of all is the use of trendy brand names routinely thrown onto the pages as a shortcut substitute for scene development. If you love a well thought out, artfully described story with authentic characters and meaningful plot development, don’t waste your time on this.

This is a wonderful mystery! The characters are very real in all the aspects of human emotions revealed by Weatherly! She pulls you along, revealing the best and worst of human motivations!My one negative comment concerns the regular misuse of pronouns: using her where she is correct, using their where sexual identity of character is known- meaning there is no excuse for using "Their" when his or her, the correct singular pronoun is demanded! This is a pet peeve of mine and has ruined many a story for me. But Anna-Lou Weatherly's masterpiece compelled me to over look these errors, because her writing is so well crafted.

Perfect gift for a 9 year old's birthday party. He was reading it as we left! I do have to say he is a very good reader and it was a bit below his reading level, I think, but it didn't matter, he just couldn't wait to read about his hero.

I bought this book for student who loves WWE to help spark his interest in reading. The book look great, was in perfect condition, and shipped quickly.

I bought this for my 10 year old for Christmas and he loves these books. He is reading so that makes me happy and he actually enjoys them.

Parents are always trying to find some hook' to get their children to read more - this is one of them!My 7 year old is enthralled with the WWE - not so much in school work. But when I bought a few of the DK readers (in subjects that he likes), he took to it like a fish to water! I've never HAD to make him read it to me - he forces me to sit down so he can read it to me over and over again. Gotta love it!Only setback I can see is that the WWE books are not all on Level 2. We have Cena, Undertaker, and Triple H - and they are not all Level 2. Would be nice if DK reader offered modified versions of this series on levels 1, 2 and 3.I Highly recommend this book for anyone with a child who is learning to read. Even my 2 and 5 yr olds like the book due to the BIG colorful pictures in it.

Purchased for my 7 year old- 2nd grader because we started allowing him to watch wrestling over the summer. He struggled through reading in 1st grade and I didnt want him to loose everything over the summer. He was able to breeze throught his book because of the reading level so it might be more age appropriate for a 6 year old/1st grader.John Cena is his favorite of favorites so this was a great light biography for a child. It touched on his early years and how he got started in wrestling. There were some great pictures and lots of cool highlights in his career thus far. We ordered the other 3 DK wrestling books and have Rey Mysterio on pre-order. Hopefully they'll come out with a few more!

I'm a student and struggled with learning about all of the parts of the spine. I ordered this to help me with learn and understand the spine better. Really good study manual, would highly recommend. Covers a lot of great information! Great illustrations, easy to see. When ordering, I did not realize that it was a folding study guide, I was under the impression that it was a large poster, but that was my bad for not reading the description clearly. Either way, it's a great study tool and it's great to have when I need to make a quick reference. Would highly recommend!

This is an excellant summary of the spine, am currently studying for my Chiropractic Doctorate and find this very helpful and easy to carry at all times. I have order the rest of the series.
