Once I started reading this book, I couldn't take it out of my hands. If you happen to know Aron Ain, this book is nothing less but an authentic projection of his style and eloquence. This piece is an eye-opener on how much time, effort, dedication and care leaders need to put into their organizations to carve a unique culture...that sometimes we (employees) tend to take for granted. One takeaway from this book is that it is very much possible to be both a successful leader and a selfless and caring human being. Aron Ain proves it in this book.
Very Kindle highlight worthy! ( And you'll want to export and save those notes too). As you'd expect perhaps from the cover, it is heavily focused on the value of, and investing in, the people at Kronos - but a bit surprisingly, there is real heft and good insight and ideas on innovation, business strategy and disrupting the norms. Some great stories by the CEO with entertaining but helpful lessons along with "evangelizations" that resonate with memorable phrases and branding you can use.Nicely done in taking those difficult to influence yet vital skills like creating trust and communication and giving them tangible actions steps. Add the gutsy efforts to "Put Kronos Out of Business" learnings and amping up the accountability ( in a good way) on Managers and it's a book you should steal shamelessly from.
Aron is an amazing leader and offers practice advice that is easy to follow and more importantly easy to share across the organization. A must read for modern companies.
Work Inspired: How to build an organization where everyone loves to work is CEO Aron Ain’s advertisement for the greatness of Kronos, “the billion dollar global software firm founded in 1977†by his brother Mark and now managed by him since 2005. Aron shares with his readers all that he has learned over the years about building a business that puts customers first by supporting, encouraging, and rewarding employees. Those readers who have a degree in business management won’t find much new in Aron’s book, but they will get a good review of management theory and concepts applied to the day to day problems and challenges of building a business valued by both customers and employees.Many readers of this review can share stories about managers they have worked for that have made their jobs a joy or a sorrow. A great manager helps to make life better both at work and at home. Of course the reverse is also true. Bad managers poison the work environment and send employees home with anger, anxiety, and stress, which often adversely affects home and family. At Kronos Aron Ain and his team created the Management Effectiveness Index to identify good and bad managers by capturing “employee judgments about managers’ performance on relevant questions.†One item on the index I thought was particularly relevant to most of us at work is: “My manager provides ongoing feedback that helps me improve my performance.†Most of us at work live in what I call a feedback vacuum. That is, we hear nothing about how our work contributes value to the organization until the end-of-year performance review. Even then we may get little feedback that helps us become more effective at our job. I think it was Ken Blanchard that said, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions†and Aron Ain would heartily agree with him.Aron recommends we go to YouTube to learn more about the Kronos story and I took his advice. Enthusiastic employees tell us about how great it is to work at Kronos and national magazines like Fortune have listened to them making Kronos a top 100 corporation for employee satisfaction. Not all is roses, as readers probably surmise. The more deeply I checked feedback from employees, the more disgruntled employees I found who state that Kronos is not always honest and upfront with decisions concerning them. Aron tells us that he regularly works 80 to 90 hours a week and some employees tell him how unreasonable it is to expect this kind of commitment from the rank and file. Aron himself seems a bit over the top to me. He says: “It’s not just any chief executive who uses the phrase ‘yikes-a-roo’ and I have to agree with him – yikes-a-roo!!! – a little of that kind of language and enthusiasm goes a long way with me.At the end if his story Aron asks us: “Who would want to read a book by me?†He follows that up with “I’m not sure I would read a book by me.†Fair enough. I did read his book and recommend it for anyone who wants a good review of effective management practice by a successful, hard working, enthusiastic leader. Aron does not sit behind his desk in a corner office with lots of windows, but gets out at the sharp end where the people are and talks with them, one on one and in large groups when appropriate. Yes, his book is a good advertisement for his company Kronos, but that does not detract from some of the good ideas he shares with us. Recommended with noted reservations.
Everyone deserves a great manager, Aron Ain, the CEO of Kronos is repeatedly quoted. It’s not just lip service. He ensures that it’s true and validates mangers effectiveness using data. I have a confession, I know this because I am one of the coaches that supports the managers at Kronos. The mangers are measured twice yearly using a tool called the MEI, Managers Effectiveness rating. The MEI is a result of experiments over many years to enhance the culture to one of innovation and inspiring. The MEI is taken seriously. I’ve never met Aron and I have heard many stories that reinforce all that is said in this book. I’ve also worked with many managers to help them be great managers.Aron’s brother Mark started the company and Aron took over as CEO in 2005 when Kronos had $500 million in revenue. Today Kronos is a 1.4 billon dollar company. Aron says his satisfaction as a leader has little to do with the revenue, rather it has everything to do with the impact it’s had on its people. The book is full of heart-warming stories. The only negative I have on the book is the constant use of, “whom I’ll callâ€. The disclaimer at the front of the book states that they are not all real names should be sufficient.At the core of his convictions is that,†focusing on people and culture was the soundest possible business strategy.†He also wanted Kronos to be “nice†to people. Kindness, caring, diversity, authenticity, and collaboration are all ingrained in the culture. One Kronite told me, that collaboration is in every job description.In my opinion, and it’s talked about in the book, there are three things that balance out and make all this kindness work in business: They are not publicly traded, they act fast to fix mistakes, and they have a huge focus on customers. By no longer being publicly traded, they are able to focus on the longer-term strategies, like creating culture. I’ve worked for a multibillion-dollar company that failed and one of their biggest errors was letting mistakes and poor performers linger and they never had a layoff. At Kronos you must deliver and if you can’t you are given chances and help. At the end day, if you can’t contribute it’s goodbye, in a very supportive and humane way.Because I’m so close to the content of this book, my review is not unbiased, rather it’s a validation that this is the real deal. It warms my heart and I wish all CEO’s and leaders would follow suit and put people first. It works as a winning business strategy too.
