This was a great, but disturbing read, but needs to be read by everyone. It is hard to believe that the Jews were treated this way and makes you think about mans inhumanity towards man. It is a very frightening scenario that will happen again if we don't watch carefully what is going on in government.
This was a memoir of a young Jewish girl that should be in the holocaust survivor library. Testimony that should never be forgotten to prevent such horrific events in the world ever again.
Most liked was her telling the hard story. Least liked was the heartache and pain of what she went through.
I read a lot of books related to the Holocaust and every one of them is unique. What I noticed is that every witness of that dark period saw the different part of it and lived through it differently. It is amazing how much you can learn reading story after story written by people who survived the Holocaust. Especially those people who went through concentration camps have stories which all talk about the same things but from the different angles, giving the story that individual touch which makes it different.This book is so intense yet, the author uses such simple words, describing short scenes from her life, scenes that are sharp as a knife. Those small and strong pictures stay carved in your memory for a long time after you read this book. A picture of dividing men and women in colons. the picture of a mother who wanted to stay closer next to daughter. And being killed for that wish. The picture of ripped dresses, food with a send in it. Vivid. Alive. Like it all happens in the front of your eyes.Amazing and scary at the same time.

I’ve read quite a few memoirs of holocaust survivors last year, and although the subject matter is harsh and depressing, I still enjoy reading them – for in every story, there’s a glimpse of hope, there’s a portrayal of hidden strength that allowed the author to survive and perhaps even more astonishing, that allowed them to live, to continue on living life, even after all the horrors they have witnessed.Risa Shtauber is one of these survivors, a brave young man who was shipped to the Oradea Ghetto, along with many other Jews, and then was later dispatched to the Plaszow Labor Camp and Ober-Altstadt Labor Camp and eventually to arguably the most famous camp of them all: Auschwitz.The fact that Risa survived is nothing short of a miracle. In this book, Dan Shtauber interviewed his grandmother, Risa, and was able to write down her experience through these harrowing, traumatizing years. The book was a gift from the grandson to the grandmother, and that alone already makes it unique and inspiring. Risa is truly an awe-inspiring woman, and she definitely deserves such a thoughtful gift. It’s heartwarming to know that, even in the most terrible darkness, the strength of a human soul can survive and hold on to the light. When I Fall, I Shall Rise is a fitting, inspiring title for this memoir.
Every Holocaust surviving story is inspiring and a testament to human strength and spirit. They are all alike but none of them are the same. This one is special because it was written as a gift from grandson to his grandmother. The family connection gives it beautiful dimension because that is the most important thing. Had Risa not been such a strong woman, fitter and a survivor, Dan would not be here to tell her story. It is so hart worming to read all that she went thru and know that she defeated the darkest hour in human history and lived a full life after that.
I have long been interested in the Jewish concentration camps and ghetto life that victims of the Holocaust had to endure during the rise of Hitler and his nightmare regime .In all the books that I have read in the past, I have never felt the deep revulsion and sense of being there that I experienced in reading this book.Despite all the difficulties you feel by reading the book, it is a must book!
