I appreciated this brief treatise on eternal security.However, I’m not quite certain, after all, who the intended audience was. You see, people who read this book usually aren’t going to be the people who are very settled in their security; they’re going to be looking for help. This book, while it does offer some elucidation on the issue, is essentially a condensed restatement of the Calvinistic doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints (complete with relevant Scriptural exposition through that theological worldview), along with some neat testimonies of folks who’ve found assurance through their circumstances or by reading Scripture. Like I said — nothing new. But that doesn’t necessarily make it a poor work; it’s simply an abridged approach to a classic subject.This book certainly won’t persuade anyone of anything they don’t already believe, to be sure. But I don’t know that it set out to do that. I think this book would be a welcomed companion to a list of books to which one might refer someone who is researching the topic of eternal security.Lastly, a point of interest/contention: if you’re going to mention Barker, who went into atheism after a life of apparent service to Christ, who then deconverted his parents and his brother, you should probably have a bit more of a developed apologetic than, “well, he wasn’t ever really saved.†Same goes for someone like Charles Templeton or any of the modern defectors. These are deep waters, far deep to merely wade, and to attempt to introduce people like this by name but not deal thoroughly with some of the factors involved in their deconversions is folly. I don’t think it’s good polemics to use specific people as an example of “they went out from us because they were not of us†only to blithely dismiss their conversion experiences wholesale. It needs more discussion. So if you’re not going to deal thoroughly with the topic, don’t bring it up only to cheaply use them as examples of charlatans who tricked everyone into thinking they were saved. I think it goes much deeper than that.So, in summary: this is essentially a primer on the “P†in TULIP, and it does a good job approaching the subject from the Calvinistic point of view, even if it does have a few misses. Nothing new, no new gold standard, but a nice short work.
