Got this book for my husband at Christmas. He's always wanted to build a wood boat and he wanted several books to gather information and opinions. This was one of two. My husband really liked the information and photos in this book. It arrived quickly and in good condition with some other items I had ordered. It was not wrapped or protected, but it made it. I will update with any further thoughts my husband might add

Great book! I have been planning (dreaming) of building a wooden boat for a number of years. Only space and time have held me up. Now that I have both, I can begin serious research of the various methods and materials and set those dreams in motion. I have a couple other well-acclaimed books on the topic of wooden boat building, but they are focused on details of design, engineering and frame structure which is good, but they was too detailed and seemed to pass over the topics I needed to understand planking and such. This book was perfect. The author had separate chapters on each planking method as well as a rather exhaustive explanation and illustrations on the crucial task of lofting and steaming the frames. I wish I had bought this book first. I could have started my dream sooner and with confidence. If you want a good, useful overview of wooden boat building, start with this book.

Appears to be a rehash of an early book by Mr. Rossel and not very in depth. Much better books out there, including his earlier and very good book "Building Small Boats.

Again another book I purchased for the IIMS wooden boat course. Well illustrated and covers the topic in detail and is easily readable. Good illustrations although color pictures would be a great benefit.

A ton of info crammed into one book. While it doesn't cover everything, it is a jump point to learning. It gives a good reference to different syles and methods.

About the Author

Nick Neddo has been teaching people primitive skills since 2000. His interests span from Stone Age skills and technology, to nature observation and art. Drawing, however, is his first and greatest interest. His skill set also includes wilderness survival, tracking and awareness, basketry, and hide tanning. He currently teaches at the Roots School in Vermont, where he runs classes and workshops for both adults and children on primitive arts, Stone-Age living skills, wilderness survival, and nature awareness. This book is a homesteader's dream come true. It is loaded with practical artistic projects that if practiced and done correctly can give one a very well-founded sense of accomplishment and joy. I haven't done any true home creative projects in quite a while and reading through this book really got my juices flowing to start on a project using materials that I already have (pet hair galore), or that I can find on my suburban property. These various projects are often linked together such as making glue out of hide pieces then having to add your iron/vinegar solution that you made as a previous project. I am looking forward to trying out some of the more simple projects with my kids this spring when we can work outside and not stink up the inside of our house cooking up what is required in a project to cook.One of my kids is really wanting to make home-made quills from large bird feathers. We won't be able to find any of large feathers around here so we will have to purchase them somewhere but the experience of knowing how to make the quills is what we are after. Then later, we can choose what type of ink we want to make - coffee, berry, soot, black walnut or some other? I've reached the age where I'm now very interested in what my ancestors did and how they did them, and I want to try to instill that interest in my kids, if possible. Honestly, I don't see our way of life being sustained forever and the day will probably come sooner than we think that all of this stuff we've had for years available all the time nearly everywhere we go just might not be around anymore, or nearly in as much a quantity and cheap price. It might behoove a person to learn to make things the way they used to be made. And besides, it's fun!!Love the projects in this book and I look forward to making a lot of them with my kids or without. I am especially interested in making paper, which we can write on using our home-made quills and ink!

I first heard about this book through an email link and being artist and jack of all trades I decided to pick it up on a pre-order. I have purchased books on making various things from nature in the past and some of them are either too simplistic, to boring, or are nothing but pictures. Of course some of the books are great and I have to say this falls into that category. It has enough information on the basics to grab your interest without being boring and it allows you to be creative with your variations. It also has enough pictures to get the information across correctly and show what you can do with the techniques, without being a coffee table book.I do have a couple of small things I can see as being problems for others. First, this book isn't really for city dwellers, urbanites, third story apartment renters, or those unacquainted with dirt. Not saying that people who live in cities won't gain anything from this book, but many of the processes are smelly, or require the ability to light fires without going to jail. Also since the book suggests, as do I, that the reader acquire materials from nature, in a humane and eco-minded manner, living in a city would make this difficult and ordering too many materials in sort of defeats the point. Second, I found some of the topics covered to be rudimentary, although I believe that is more from my preexisting knowledge on the subject rather than an issue wit the book. It is only for a couple of things, however, and even though I dabble in this sort of art (for example I make my own charcoal all the time) I still found a great number of useful things.If you are an artist or know an artist who has access to the outdoor wonders of nature, then I recommend this book for you, or for you to purchase for them. Also anyone who likes the book "Back to Basics" by Abigail R. Gehring will love this book as well. If you like to take hikes and long nature walks you will be amazed by all of the materials you can find in just a couple of minutes of looking. I can see this book getting ragged edges and a worn cover, not because of the quality of the bookbinding, but because I will look at it so often. BUY THIS BOOK.

This book is unlike any book on art that I have ever read or have in my art library. The pictures on the cover are what drew me to this book. I love to use charcoal, inks, watercolors, etc in my art. I also love to use earthy colors, and I especially love to have an organic feel to my art. So this book piqued my interest.It exceeded ALLand EVERY expectations. I'll never walk through the woods, go on a hike or look at my own backyard the same. Nick breaks down step by step different ways to create all my favorite mediums using materials Mother Nature provides.All that said, making the different supplies listed throughout his book are not quick to make, nor may all the materials be readily available. Though everything is broken down in easy to follow step by step with pictures, and photos of art Nick creates using his organic supplies. Even if you never want to make your own supplies, this book is a worthy addition to any artists library.

Inspiring! I love nothing more than walking in the wild, gathering plants and creating works of art from them. But up until now, most of those things we tools for survival. Bowls, bows, baskets and everything else you can think of that starts with the letter B. The Organic Artist however, allows the individual to step back in time to that moment when art was advanced one step further than function. With one foot in the past, the reader can take a step forward toward the future, where perhaps, like the author, they can create magnificent works of art that are made, start to finish, in harmony with the natural world. Neddo's own work serves as an inspiring example of what's possible and his explanations are clear and easy to follow. I'm most grateful for the teachings shared in this book.

Overall this book will teach me most of what I need to know. The only parts of it I absolutely will not be using are the parts like the 'hide glue' that require use of animal parts to make it. I was hoping the section on paper would also include how to make paper from recycled paper but it only covers making it from leaves.

This book just under 10 hours of enduring the most annoying voice to explain a theory that could have been covered more effectively in ten minutes. They covered every piece of scientific data since the dawn of man that lead to their achievement. This lead to their argument being broken and lost in the vast amount of data they presented to cover up the fact that their ground breaking theory amounted to little more than what every middle school child understands about human nature. People want to acquire stuff, friends, knowledge, and then protect it once they have it. The specific way go about this is defined by the prevailing social norms in their area. I guess it doesn't even take 10 minutes to explain.

I had to read this book for my MBA. The first half of it is good, the authors give examples supporting their theory, which is interesting to know about. The second half, however, is full of conjectures and overstatements and I got the impression the authors had nothing new to say but kept outpouring their thoughts.The subject is interesting, but their presentation of it generally treats human nature in a very instrumental and utilitarian way, too Anglo Saxon to my taste :-) (depending on the point of view of objectivity, it may be an advantage). But I can say I came out better after reading this book.

Harvard Business School professors Lawrence and Nohria present a sociobiological theory of motivation directed to the business environment. They claim that humans possess four basic drives to acquire, to bond, to learn, and to defend. The unique approach in their book is the manner in which they apply their theory specifically to the workplace. Historical case studies are used to show that successful organizations are those that give their employees opportunities to fulfill all four of these drives. There are of course a number of competing drive theories from Freud's sexual drive to Steven Reiss's 16-drive theory. The authors, well versed in sociobiology, openly acknowledge that the numbers and exact nature of our drives need further exploration and provide suggestions for research projects. Irregardless of how many more drives one human may or may not posses their theory is enlightening for any reader. While being academic in its approach and presentation it is written with the lay reader in mind so any undergraduate will comfortably assimilate the information provided. The recipes look good! Can’t wait to try them. She went through great trouble posting the nutritional facts which I was so happy about but you missed one VERY big thing on each recipe!!! What is the serving size???? How did no one catch this? It clearly says how many servings but of what amount? Please does anyone know ? I need to find out.

From looking through this book, a lot of the recipes seem too complicated for a general every day cook. A lot of the ingredients just seem too fancy. Perfect if that's what you're looking for though! I was pretty bummed at how thin this book really is.

Book is about 1/8" thick, no pictures, the serving size is missing and the content is not really interesting.

The recipes are easy & delicious & use common foods. My biggest problem was all the typos. I would recommend this cookbook if you can look over the mistakes.
