Rayne Hall has written a book that gives clear descriptions and examples of everything she talks about, without a lot of extraneous words.Although I've been aware of the power of words through reading and writing poetry from a young age, I was deplorably clueless how authors are able to use the same "tricks" in their prose works, with the exception of alliteration. (I love alliteration). In part one of her book, Rayne gives a quite thorough "sound effect" thesaurus: which sounds in which words subconsciously affect the reader's perception of what he or she is reading. For example, words like dark and depressing can have a dismal effect (see?) on a reader's mind, while words like funny or flippant give a light-hearted feel to what is being read.In Part two, Rayne shows how the location of a word within a sentence--and the length of the sentence itself--has much to do with how the word is perceived and it's relative strength, both within the sentence and the story as a whole. Here, also, she discusses things like assonance, dissonance, repetition for emphasis, and sentence length.All-in-all, this is a marvelous reference book for those who want to make their word choices in their writing not merely adequate, but memorable

As a writer, are you having difficulty getting your craft to a more advanced level? Most books for writers focus on the basics: story structure, character creation, and smooth prose. Many of us master those and crave further instruction to speed up our progress.Enter Rayne Hall’s “Writer’s Craft” series, books for journeyman and master authors seeking advanced techniques."Euphonics for Writers" is as advanced as they come. People unconsciously draw meaning from the sounds of speech. A frightening graveyard versus a spooky cemetery. A goofy idiot versus a bumbling buffoon. By purposefully layering in euphonics, you can punch up your prose like a poet. The book goes into the implications of various phonemes, and while I’ve alluded to alliteration here, "Euphonics for Writers" covers many other ways to weave meaning-bearing sounds into your books.Rayne Hall also covers how to do so with subtlety. Rhymes are inspiring in poetry, but sounds silly in prose, so you’ll learn how to create mood with sound without bringing on laughter, unless you want to.I enjoyed this book very much and have been using its tips while editing the final draft of my current novel. To me, that’s really what "Euphonics for Writers" is about: putting the final shine on an already good story.

This was great! I loved it.This is what you need to put those finishing touches on your writing. There's two parts: the first part is a euphonic thesaurus, and the second is loaded with powerful little tricks like alliteration and backloading. I found the book to be the perfect length, short enough that it was an easy read, but not so short that I felt cheated. And Rayne's writing style is really easy to understand.I write mostly flash fiction and prose poetry, and I really enjoyed learning ways to make my writing more powerful. I especially found the section about backloading helpful. A handy book to have around when you're working on those final drafts and you want to really make your writing shine.

This is a well written guide to teach you howto touch your reader's subconscious.Sound spooky, or strange?Don't worry. It sounded exactly that way to me at first.Until I learned that certain sounds have certaineffects on the psyche.Once you learn to use those words, you can changehow your readers feel. You will be shown how to use the techniques, and howto combine them to get the best effect. The book is a thesaurus of sound effects, and we allknow that a thesaurus is but a tool to give us writersideas. Then, it is up to you to expand, and fill in the gaps.I always use euphonics when I do my rewrites. And I wear this book out.

Really like it! Fascinating, practical guide to using sound in English (and, perhaps, other languages) to evoke mood. Alphabetical, with some other hitns about sound at the end. I gave it a try and used it to revise something I was writing, and I think it did make an impact. What was interesting to me was how some words in English already have the connotations associated with the sound (e.g. creep, evil, and eerie all have creepy connotations and have an ee), but having the book helped me to choose unrelated words (such as sheep or tree) to emphasize the sound.Excellent series, as a whole - very practical and straightforward, with good examples!

While Rayne Hall has written an interesting book, the technique didn’t catch my attention. According to the book’s description, “Euphonics techniques are popular in poetry, but seldom used in prose.” Why?Writers rarely use this technique in prose because used to excess they become a gimmick to gain the readers’ attention. In writing, less is best.Ms. Rayne’s books, are always informative.

The techniques are detailed in brief, minimalist scenarios that effectively convey the information. I've applied this to manuscripts that are currently with my readers. You definitely don't want to over-do the use of euphonics. I used what was detailed in this book to set up a tense, suspenseful scene, then exposed the rest of the scene through character conversation and brief description.

I'm behind in my reviews so I'm doing some quickies. This is a useful book for writers. It's easy to use and as usual Rayne explains what each section is about, great examples, and when, how, and why to use certain words in certain scenes.Again, as usual, Rayne has jammed pack her book with tips and tricks.I have it open now whenever I'm doing my final edits to help craft my stories.
