Honestly, whomever gave this book less than 4 stars has absolutely no imagination and shouldn't be reading anything buy dry, mundane nonfiction. I don't even know where to start with this review. I am so excited to find a new author that can actually rival JK Rowling! If I could buy stock in this author's future literary success, I would invest BiG TiME! It is a big book, but you'll find yourself, or your child, flying through it. I found myself unable to stop, yet dreading reaching the conclusion. To my utter delight, I discovered that a second book is in the works and planned for October of 2018. I will most assuredly be pre-ordering it ASAP and waiting impatiently. READ THIS BOOK!
I can't believe I'm so slow writing this review, but in fairness, the book has now been read by 4 people in our home and I always come in last when it comes to that debate.Everything about this book drips with wonder. To say that Jessica Townsend is a once in a decade writer/storyteller is not too brave a comment. She writes her brave lead, Morigan, with grace and while she has a shadowy past, her desire to find hope is ever present. I know there have been a lot of comparisons to Potter here, but while I think that's fair, I think that Nevermoor stands on its own, and no comparisons are needed.I hate spoilery reviews, but I will say this. You'll fall in love with Morigan Crow. If you're an old duffer like me you will start planning your Jupiter cosplay before you finish the chapter when he is introduced (which is perhaps my favorite character introduction in a decade). And you'll never look at an old hotel or an umbrella the same.Do your self and your young readers a favor and stuff this book beneath the Christmas tree this year.
I don’t read a lot of middle grade novels and after enjoying a couple of them in the last couple of years, I decided that I wanted to get more into middle grade fantasy. I had been hearing a lot about Nevermoor and decided to give it a chance and I am so glad that I did.The Trials of Morrigan Crow is about this young girl named Morrigan Crow that has been cursed her entire life. She has been told that when bad things happen around her that it is her fault. She also has been told that on her eleventh birthday, which will be on Eventide, she will die. However, right before that can happen she gets rescued and whisked off to Nevermoor by this man named Jupiter North. Jupiter wants Morrigan to enter these trials so that she can join the Wundrous Society, which will give her the opportunity to stay in Nevermoor forever.I absolutely adored this book. I think the magic and whimsy is what drew me in and kept me entertained the entire time. I want to visit Nevermoor and stay there forever. It reminded me a bit of Wonderland in the sense that it was kind of kooky and odd in a good way. I really hope that we get to see more of it in the next book.I also loved the characters. Morrigan, especially, was a delight. She has this dry sense of humor that kept me chuckling as I was reading. She was also brave and I loved that she constantly questioned everything. With her being thrusted into this new world that she didn’t even know existed, it was really realistic to have her question Jupiter on what was happening. I was annoyed that Jupiter kept a lot of things from her at times, but by the end of the book I understood more on why he did it. The trials were also a lot of fun. I’m a sucker for some kind of competition and this satisfied that for me immensely.I recommend this book for kids and adults alike. I think that a lot of people will enjoy this and I definitely think it deserves the hype it has gotten. I can’t wait for the sequel to find out what is going to happen to my babies next. Also, the audiobook was incredible and I highly suggest checking it out if you’re into that medium.
I breezed right through this book, which is saying something as it is a bit long for the middle grade genre (approx. 450 pages). But the action kept me turning the pages as well as the mysterious goings on in Nevermoor. There is a lot in this book that is left unexplained until the very end and even then we still don’t know what’s to come. But that’s what sequels are for right? (fingers crossed!)There were some good lessons for middle graders in this book, including lessons about bullying, having differences, and judging books by their covers, so to speak. I think kids would relate to Morrigan Crow and her friend, Hawthorne. I think they would also enjoy the idea of escaping to somewhere magical and learning that there is something special about them. I wouldn’t be surprised if this new world Jessica Townsend has created becomes the next craze in middle grade fantasy fiction. Have we finally found the next Harry Potter? Only time will tell…but I’m anxious for Morrigan’s next adventure. Until then, step boldly!Read full review at: KaitsBookshelf.com
More times than not, I read a middle grade book and feel like it lacked something that made the book relatable to all ages. I did not feel that way about this book at all. This book can be enjoyed by both children and adults and has enough wit to entice both.Off to a slow start, I didn't quite know what to expect at the beginning of this book. As I continued to read, the book became more and more enticing as the story line began to take place and we met some characters that are important to the story line. I also slowly began to pick up the pace on how quickly I devoured this the further in I got. This was such a great middle grade book and I cannot wait to read to next in the series.
Book #38 Read in 2018Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessican TownsendThis middle grade/young adult fantasy is a must read for Harry Potter fans. Morrigan Crow is taken on by Jupiter North as a prospect to join a magical society. But Morrigan does not know what her magical talent, or knack, is and does not know if she will make it into the society. She makes good friends, meets interesting magical people and will keep readers engaged while she goes through four trials to get into the society. I will read the sequel.
