i pre-oredered the book before it was released because of my anticipation to get some help and encouragement from the subject presented. I am 59 year old male and have struggled with depression for almost 10 years and have been a runner for over 40 years. I do notice that running helps with depression and i have tried various anti-depression/anxiety medications and the side effects were often worse than the depression. The book did not tell me anything i didnt already know and the disappointment of the book was found in the chapter entitled...."when running is not enough" and goes on to promote the advantages of medication. So....the book can be summed up in one phrase: Running helps with depression but sometimes medication is also needed. Nothing really new.

If you have anxiety, depression or anything related to those two this book can provide relief in knowing that we are all figuring it out as we go and some of these tools could be helpful. Easy and enjoyable read!

The detail and references that Scott used in this book were fantastic. As I started to realize I was dealing with Depression it was hard to imagine how I would cope. There are passages in this book that detail the exact thinking mechanisms I had and gave me labels for them and also hope that there were ways to cope. I love that Scott is so thorough in his references and so vulnerable with sharing details of his life. Awesome book. Love it!

Zack Hample tries to do two things in this book. First, he gives us a history of the baseball, not the game of baseball but the ball itself. Second, he tells us about the thousands of baseballs he's managed to snag at major league games over the years, and offers us specific advice on how we too can catch or pick up or be handed big league baseballs.He does a pretty good job of the first part, although to make it entertaining he has to pad the history of the ball quite a bit. This is understandable, as even a devoted fan's eyes will glaze over if all he's reading is a year by year diary of how Spalding or Rawlings changed the quality of the wool yarn inside their baseballs or moved the stitching process from this country to that other country. So there are stories about famous baseballs snagged by fans, or weird incidents like big leaguers who hit baseballs into the stands which struck their wives or mothers, or serious injuries to players or spectators caused by baseballs, and so on. Some of these things seem to be a bit of a stretch in a book supposed to be about the ball itself, but without them this would have been a very skinny book.The second part, about how fans can get their hands on balls at big league games, I found less interesting simply because I cannot picture myself being as fanatical as Hample is in acquiring baseballs. Hample says he's collected over 9,000 baseballs over the years, and while I don't doubt that the techniques he describes are effective, I have to think he misses a lot of the game by spending his time trying to elbow his way into the right spot to catch a foul ball. It turns out many of the balls in his collection were hit into the stands during batting practice, or were tossed to him by a groundskeeper or a coach rather than being caught, and I guess I just don't see the thrill of getting a ball that went into the stands in batting practice after being hit by an unknown player before an unimportant game. Of course Hample has also snagged some famous balls like Barry Bonds' 724th home run, that sort of thing is impressive. Sure, I sometimes take my glove to the game depending on where I'll be sitting, but I just can't see myself running around the stands for several hours based on whether a left or right-handed power hitter is on deck--for one thing I'd spill my beer trying to emulate Hample's gymnastics.The book is entertaining, although Hample's book Watching Baseball Smarter is a far better read. A baseball nut will enjoy "The Baseball", but it's well down the list in my baseball library.

Stunts, Scandals, and Secrets Beneath the Stitches takes the reader on a trip through the history of the game, the players, coaches and managers, fans, and pop culture/trivia that center around this simple (or not so simple) sphere and turns "the baseball" into a sort of character that, like all great characters, goes through an impressive series of changes before becoming what we know it as today. A quick, solid read--pick up a copy if you're even the most casual fan of the game and I guarantee you'll learn something new and you'll be in for a few laughs, too.

This is a great book to read while waiting for Opening Day to arrive. It's just the sort of book that can whet the appetite for the baseball season to begin.Zack Hample is a master ballhawk. A ballhawk, by definition, is someone who is an expert at chasing down baseballs at major league baseball games (and even some spring training games). In The Baseball, Hample gives us a great look at that little white ball that we all obsess so much over. This is not a book about baseball, the game. This is a book about THE baseball.Part One gives us a glimpse of baseballs in the news, from the souvenir craze to people who have actually been killed either by baseballs, or in the chase for them. (Fortunately, that last chapter is relatively small.) There are World Series balls, Barry Bonds home runs, Hank Aaron home runs, Sammy Sosa home runs, foul balls, various stunts by players and others, and even a chapter on "Foul Balls in Pop Culture." Unfortunately, there is a picture of Justin Bieber in that chapter.Part Two gives us some history, with a great chapter on the evolution of the baseball, from 1847 to 2011. The interesting thing about that chapter is that there have always been controversies about the hotness of the ball, with allegations that the ball is juiced in some eras. The ball manufacturers swear that the ball has been made the same for a long time, now, with no specific changes that would make the ball hotter or less so. There is a great chapter on Rawlings and how the ball is made, followed by one about how they are stored and prepared for games, including a part about the infamous "Lena Blackburne Rubbing Mud." Yes, for those who are not aware, mud is rubbed onto the surface of every single baseball used in MLB play. But not just any mud. It is secret mud, from a secret location, somewhere in New Jersey.Finally, in Part Three, Mr. Hamble gives us some tips on how to snag baseballs, from the master, himself. There are tips about various ballparks, along with some etiquette, what to do, what not to do, what you can get away with, how to talk to the players to convince them to give you a ball, and so on. He lists his favorite ballparks for getting balls (and our local Rangers Ballpark is one of his top ten). He gives a rundown of the top 10 ballhawks that he knows about.Bottom line is that this is just a fun book about the baseball. I learned a lot, as I read it, and I was entertained by it, as well. Hample's writing style is fun, even when describing the lengthy history of the baseball and its evolution.I recommend this book for any true fan of the game.

Great for Recreation areas. If you are RVing around CA, you'll need it!! Benchmark maps are almost a necessity for RV boondockers! They contain such a variety of information about public lands, unmarked backroads, and hidden hot pools. California has such a variety of scenery and natural resources and this book details them minutely. Get a Benchmark for each state you RV in!!

This has been a pretty solid addition to my adventures. There have been a bunch of times on BLM land where the book shows roads where they are gated and private. This seems especially bad in rangeland in the coast range (mostly south of the bay). Besides that, its solid.

A buddy and I took a surf trip up the coast of California. We went totally analog and left the cell phones, MP3 players and GPS at home. We had boards, camping equipment and this atlas. Whenever we wanted to get off the beaten track or find alternative routes, we consulted our atlas and it gave us every single road no matter home big, small or well maintained and ever single camping site (not just the popular/easy/equipped ones). We had a great time discovering new landmarks all taken directly from this atlas. What a great buy!

GPS doesn’t work in some higher elevations and possibly remote woods. My brother bought this and recommended it to me since l will be taking road trips with my son in our 16’ Airstream soon. This will come in handy when we don’t have a signal or just simply want to look at maps the traditional way without technology.

This Atlas helps me get there every time.Of course, it is not a s detailed a as a USGS quad, but it allows you to figure out which quad you might want and where the nearest ranger station is to get it!

I love the layout for this road guide. It starts with the highest abstraction view of California with page links to all the sub-sections of California. Lots of room to make personal notes in the margins and I have gained several nuggets of actionable insight(like campsite locations) that even Google maps couldn't find. A must-have for long road trips without garunteed cell service. So simple I got another one for my grandma for mother's day

I liked the old Atlas and Gazetteer better. The scale on the old was approx 1:200000 whereas this one is 1:800000. The detail just isn't there. If you had planned on going exploring and are in an area that doesn't have phone coverage you are out of luck.

These maps have many small roads not found of AAA or other atlas';but don't contain the thousands of good dirt roads (not 4 wheel driveroads) as found on US forest service maps. There are many roads ok with most good sturdy vehicles that can travel on US forest service roads

I got his book for my niece since she has to read during the summer for school. I love the availability of the book and being able to download.

The story is a timeless classic and deserves to be. Every kid should have this book on their shelf. I'm taking three stars off for two things that are particular to this edition that make it a truly horrible rendition of this book. First, I ordered a hardcover edition of this book, and it is technically a hardcover. But it happens to be a hardcover the size of a typical paperback. Even worse someone thought it would be a great idea to print the text in peach colored ink, making reading it very difficult and without getting headaches. Total garbage.

Many of us are familiar with this story so I am going to comment on how I used it. My husband reads to our son at night. He has a short attention span but we want him to get longer books to build his comprehension. This book is great because it is engaging, but the short chapters make it easy to read only a small section each night. My son loves "peach book."

I am a fairly progressive parent, but I had to stop reading this to my then 5 year old. I never saw this book before, and figured it would just be a silly rhymes book. The first story talks about women being a SLUT? I skipped over that part and decided to put that book aside. The mother of Jack from the beanstalk story is incredibly mean to her son...calls him names. I don't see how this book is appropriate for any young child. It isn't funny and not educational, so this one holds no value to bother with for a younger child. Maybe I'll give it to him when he's older? At that point, I don't think he'd be as interested in the types of stories in this thing. FAIL.

I ended up not using this for my classroom because some of the rhymes were a little too off color for my students. I mean, I thought they were great and most of them were really good -- very Dahl-esque. Some of them had some issues with translation... as in, I believe "slut" might have a different meaning than we use commonly in the US and my 5th graders would have not have handled it well. Or, I wouldn't have handled my 5th graders' reactions well. :)

Wish I had read the reviews. Not a fan of reading about a prince calling Cinderella a dirty SLUT to my young daughters and son! Not even close to appropriate for 6-8.

My 7 year old son had to write a book report on a play or script so I needed to find something that would be appropriate for his age. I found this book on Amazon and hoped that he would enjoy it. He loved it! He loved the wonderful Roald Dahl story, but also how the book gives helpful tips for stage setting and costumes. He wants to put on this play himself! Customers need to realize this is a SCRIPT for a PLAY of "James and the Giant Peach". It has been ADAPTED from the original story to serve the purpose of theatre. If that fits your needs, I highly recommend this book!

I read this before reading it to my child and was I ever grateful for the touching story with just enough tension and suspense. It is so hard to find books that actually develop characters, have a moral unfolding, but neither scold nor over expose children. I am really not into the books that have jaded ill tempered kids as the character or in the end some beloved animal dies and this just avoids that whole obscene circus feel. It is a delightful gem which shows you a beginning understanding of nuance in the young fellow. Funny, I had never heard of this one until I picked it up randomly at the library. I really loved it so much I had to buy a copy so we would have it in the shelf.

My son (5 yrs old) and I really enjoyed this book. He loved the thoughts of a giant peach being carried around by seagulls. I highly recommend this for parents looking to find books that will engage and interest their children. With these short novels, my son has finally found something he loves in the reading world. Roald Dahl has opened up his imagination and now he loves nothing more than to write his own little books...most of which have plots similar to the Dahl books we have read.Now we will watch the movie and compare the two!
