Introduction The Internet is a global communications network. With connections in more than 100 countries, tens of millions of people use the Internet for business, education, and recreation. People can converse using Internet phones, send faxes, participate in online chats and bulletin boards, play multiuser games, and experiment with virtual environments. Special-purpose computers called routers connect the Internet together. As data is forwarded from one place in the Internet to another, it is the routers that make the decisions as to where and how the data is forwarded. The protocols that dynamically inform the routers of the paths that the data should take are called routing protocols. It is the job of these protocols to react quickly to changes in the Internet's infrastructure, such as transmission lines going in and out of service, routers crashing, changes in network policies, and so on. Routing is what makes the Internet tick. Although many users of the Internet and the World Wide Web are unaware of the machinery underlying the network applications, routing is an interesting but complicated subject. Routing protocols are sophisticated distributed algorithms that must also be extremely robust to keep a large, decentralized network like the Internet running smoothly. Audience This book is for students of data communications, TCP/IP network administrators, protocol designers, developers of routing protocol software, and other professionals involved in the design, development, and management of TCP/IP networks. This book is a practical, hands-on description of Internet routing rather than a theoretical treatment. Although we describe how the various protocols were intended to work, we also describe how well the design has translated into practice. Internet protocol design is a practical undertaking itself, with efficiency of implementation often dictating design choices. For this reason, this book gives an in-depth treatment of how a router really works. Instead of just describing the algorithms, this book goes beyond to show how the algorithms are implemented. We often present ideas in a historical context, showing how Internet protocols have evolved. This is done for two reasons. First, you can learn a lot from the mistakes (and successes) of the past. Second, in order to participate in Internet discussion groups, many of which are dominated by old-timers, it is good to have some context. This book is not an elementary introduction to TCP/IP and its routing. Instead we assume that you have some familiarity with the TCP/IP protocol suite and some exposure to the basic concepts of routing. These assumptions allow us to explore many of the facets of Internet routing in greater detail than possible in an introductory text. Organization of This Book This book is organized into five parts. Part I sets the groundwork for a discussion of Internet routing. After a brief description of how routing fits together with the rest of the Internet's protocols, Chapter 1 describes in depth how a router forwards packets. This discussion naturally leads to an explanation of IP addressing and CIDR, as well as of the interaction of hosts and routers. Internet routing protocols are introduced in Chapter 2, beginning with a treatment of the end product of all routing protocols: the router's routing table. Chapter 2 ends with an overview of the Internet's routing architecture and the two main routing technologies in use in today's Internet: Distance Vector and link-state algorithms. Part II describes the Internet's OSPF routing protocol. We start in Chapter 3 with an explanation of why the OSPF protocol was developed in the first place. Chapter 4 discusses the basics of link-state routing; Chapter 5, how OSPF behaves over various subnet technologies; Chapter 6, its use of hierarchical routing; and Chapter 7, extensions to OSPF. Each chapter not only describes how OSPF works but also explains why it works that way. We explore the reasons behind OSPF's design decisions and how the OSPF protocol has evolved to keep pace with the rapidly changing Internet environment. Part II concludes with an OSPF FAQ (Chapter 8). Part III (Chapters 9 and 10) describes TCP/IP multicast routing, including broadcast and multicast forwarding, the MBONE, and the two distinct types of multicast routing protocols: source-based trees and shared-tree algorithms. As we did with unicast routing, we go further into the subject of multicast routing through the examination of a particular multicast routing protocol: the Multicast Extensions to OSPF (MOSPF). Part IV covers the configuration and management of Internet routing. The configuration and management of OSPF is explained in detail in Chapter 11. Chapter 12 describes the tools used to monitor and debug routing in a TCP/IP network. For each tool, we describe its use, how it works, and its advantages and drawbacks. Part V is a comparison of Internet routing protocols. Chapter 13 compares and contrasts the routing protocols in use in the Internet: RIP, OSPF, BGP, IGRP, and IS-IS. In Chapter 14, we examine the available multicast protocols: DVMRP, MOSPF, PIM Dense and Sparse, and CBT. Following Chapter 14 is an extensive bibliography arranged and numbered in alphabetical order. Within the text, the citation 85, for example, refers to item 85 in the bibliography. Companion Book: OSPF Complete Implementation The companion book OSPF Complete Implementation, in keeping with the Internet tradition that reveres "working code" over all else, explores even further the mechanics of Internet routing through examination of a real, working OSPF implementation. The book contains a complete implementation of OSPF on CD. Written in C++, the OSPF implementation is intended to be portable to a wide range of environments. Two sample ports are included: an OSPF routing daemon (called ospfd) for FreeBSD 2.1 and an OSPF routing simulator that can be run on Windows 95. The OSPF implementation has been developed using publicly available tools. This book shows - in great detail - that OSPF isn't so complicated (well kinda).It outlines OSPF, MOSPF and some Multicast topics (IGMP).This book and some lab time with OSPF will set you on the road to Expertise (CCIE).

Even though the book is quite old, it gives a thorough explanation of protocol operations and packet format details. Mostly it is RFC based and includes initial ideas behind the technology, which help you to grasp the protocol behavior. It is not configuration based and you will not find any practical examples here, however, I would recommend the book for everyone who is interested in low-level theory details.

If you are a technical guy with interest in understandingwhat happens behind the scene of your IP network this is a good book. The only drawback is that in some point you have the feeling things are non fully explained (details left to the reader); it's possible Jhon Moy had some interest in selling the second detailed book on OSPF (The complete implementation ..").Nice to compare what Moy says about OSPF vs. IS-IS with Perlman idea.

Once I started reading this book, I couldn't take it out of my hands. If you happen to know Aron Ain, this book is nothing less but an authentic projection of his style and eloquence. This piece is an eye-opener on how much time, effort, dedication and care leaders need to put into their organizations to carve a unique culture...that sometimes we (employees) tend to take for granted. One takeaway from this book is that it is very much possible to be both a successful leader and a selfless and caring human being. Aron Ain proves it in this book.

Very Kindle highlight worthy! ( And you'll want to export and save those notes too). As you'd expect perhaps from the cover, it is heavily focused on the value of, and investing in, the people at Kronos - but a bit surprisingly, there is real heft and good insight and ideas on innovation, business strategy and disrupting the norms. Some great stories by the CEO with entertaining but helpful lessons along with "evangelizations" that resonate with memorable phrases and branding you can use.Nicely done in taking those difficult to influence yet vital skills like creating trust and communication and giving them tangible actions steps. Add the gutsy efforts to "Put Kronos Out of Business" learnings and amping up the accountability ( in a good way) on Managers and it's a book you should steal shamelessly from.

Aron is an amazing leader and offers practice advice that is easy to follow and more importantly easy to share across the organization. A must read for modern companies.

Work Inspired: How to build an organization where everyone loves to work is CEO Aron Ain’s advertisement for the greatness of Kronos, “the billion dollar global software firm founded in 1977” by his brother Mark and now managed by him since 2005. Aron shares with his readers all that he has learned over the years about building a business that puts customers first by supporting, encouraging, and rewarding employees. Those readers who have a degree in business management won’t find much new in Aron’s book, but they will get a good review of management theory and concepts applied to the day to day problems and challenges of building a business valued by both customers and employees.Many readers of this review can share stories about managers they have worked for that have made their jobs a joy or a sorrow. A great manager helps to make life better both at work and at home. Of course the reverse is also true. Bad managers poison the work environment and send employees home with anger, anxiety, and stress, which often adversely affects home and family. At Kronos Aron Ain and his team created the Management Effectiveness Index to identify good and bad managers by capturing “employee judgments about managers’ performance on relevant questions.” One item on the index I thought was particularly relevant to most of us at work is: “My manager provides ongoing feedback that helps me improve my performance.” Most of us at work live in what I call a feedback vacuum. That is, we hear nothing about how our work contributes value to the organization until the end-of-year performance review. Even then we may get little feedback that helps us become more effective at our job. I think it was Ken Blanchard that said, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions” and Aron Ain would heartily agree with him.Aron recommends we go to YouTube to learn more about the Kronos story and I took his advice. Enthusiastic employees tell us about how great it is to work at Kronos and national magazines like Fortune have listened to them making Kronos a top 100 corporation for employee satisfaction. Not all is roses, as readers probably surmise. The more deeply I checked feedback from employees, the more disgruntled employees I found who state that Kronos is not always honest and upfront with decisions concerning them. Aron tells us that he regularly works 80 to 90 hours a week and some employees tell him how unreasonable it is to expect this kind of commitment from the rank and file. Aron himself seems a bit over the top to me. He says: “It’s not just any chief executive who uses the phrase ‘yikes-a-roo’ and I have to agree with him – yikes-a-roo!!! – a little of that kind of language and enthusiasm goes a long way with me.At the end if his story Aron asks us: “Who would want to read a book by me?” He follows that up with “I’m not sure I would read a book by me.” Fair enough. I did read his book and recommend it for anyone who wants a good review of effective management practice by a successful, hard working, enthusiastic leader. Aron does not sit behind his desk in a corner office with lots of windows, but gets out at the sharp end where the people are and talks with them, one on one and in large groups when appropriate. Yes, his book is a good advertisement for his company Kronos, but that does not detract from some of the good ideas he shares with us. Recommended with noted reservations.

Everyone deserves a great manager, Aron Ain, the CEO of Kronos is repeatedly quoted. It’s not just lip service. He ensures that it’s true and validates mangers effectiveness using data. I have a confession, I know this because I am one of the coaches that supports the managers at Kronos. The mangers are measured twice yearly using a tool called the MEI, Managers Effectiveness rating. The MEI is a result of experiments over many years to enhance the culture to one of innovation and inspiring. The MEI is taken seriously. I’ve never met Aron and I have heard many stories that reinforce all that is said in this book. I’ve also worked with many managers to help them be great managers.Aron’s brother Mark started the company and Aron took over as CEO in 2005 when Kronos had $500 million in revenue. Today Kronos is a 1.4 billon dollar company. Aron says his satisfaction as a leader has little to do with the revenue, rather it has everything to do with the impact it’s had on its people. The book is full of heart-warming stories. The only negative I have on the book is the constant use of, “whom I’ll call”. The disclaimer at the front of the book states that they are not all real names should be sufficient.At the core of his convictions is that,” focusing on people and culture was the soundest possible business strategy.” He also wanted Kronos to be “nice” to people. Kindness, caring, diversity, authenticity, and collaboration are all ingrained in the culture. One Kronite told me, that collaboration is in every job description.In my opinion, and it’s talked about in the book, there are three things that balance out and make all this kindness work in business: They are not publicly traded, they act fast to fix mistakes, and they have a huge focus on customers. By no longer being publicly traded, they are able to focus on the longer-term strategies, like creating culture. I’ve worked for a multibillion-dollar company that failed and one of their biggest errors was letting mistakes and poor performers linger and they never had a layoff. At Kronos you must deliver and if you can’t you are given chances and help. At the end day, if you can’t contribute it’s goodbye, in a very supportive and humane way.Because I’m so close to the content of this book, my review is not unbiased, rather it’s a validation that this is the real deal. It warms my heart and I wish all CEO’s and leaders would follow suit and put people first. It works as a winning business strategy too.

I wanted to read the source material from the Netflix show, and this definitely has a different vibe but I like it. Just wish it was longer.

First comic I have read by Gerard Way. Found this comic actually very good and would like to read more. Visually well written and graphics were amazing especially characters which were explained at beginning of comic.

A very detailed guide for pruning and training for the prospective olive orchard owner and the current owners. As much as it is detailed, it is not addressed only to the agricultural professional - not boring you out with unfamiliar, academical phrases. Highly recommend it.

A most helpful and enlightening book. The technical and complex subject is made accessible and logical. It is erudite without being pretentious, and instructive without being dogmatic. A most useful work for the average olive farmer to have at his hand.

I bought this book primarily for the few pages on pruning to renew an old orchard. What I saw was pretty radical, but it might be just what I need for my orchard of 100 year old olive trees. Time will tell. I'll get back to you then.

It will make more sense if the author provided weather zones. For example, it would have been helpful if a table was included that shows: 4 or 5 different regions, elevation, temperature during cultivation, etc. if I am from a different part of the world I can compare my data to a certain region in Italy.

Danny L. Barney is the author of Storey’s Guide to Growing Organic Orchard Fruits. He is with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service and was formerly a professor of horticulture and an extension specialist at the University of Idaho. His hands-on research and production experience includes apples, sweet and tart cherries, peaches, pears, plums, and small fruits and berries. He teaches workshops on tree fruit and small fruit production, as well as organic farming and gardening. He lives in Ames, Iowa.

Only part way through the book and am really liking it. Thumbed through the rest and am thrilled with the non-stop info throughout the entire book. A lot of books like to tell you about their personal views & experiences. That is all good, but I am needing info on how to set up an orchard and what to choose to grow. This book is certainly meeting that need.Very informative! Excellent charts, illustrations, how to set up your home or business orchard, and business start up info.I would love to see another book from this same author on other unusual types of fruits, such as Hardy Kiwi, Aronia Berry, and Elderberry for northern growers.

Excellent book for the home fruit grower. Since organic growing methods are stressed in the book, disease resistance varieties are emphasized. The book covers site selection and preparation, disease preventation and treatment, variety selection and pruning. Lots of info on rootstocks especially modern ones which many books lack coverage of. The book covers the usual fruits apple, cherry, etc. as well as spending time on unusual fruits like serviceberries and medlars. Good easy to understand guidance on pruning which covers several different methods for each fruit type. I wish I had found this book earlier it would have saved me a lot of time searching the internet and checking books out of the library trying to find information that most sources omit.

This book is for the more serious reader on the subject. It is a in-depth look at orchards, and covers topics in chapters. The book is a pretty thick (544 pages) yet easy to read. It is defiantly not a step by step picture book. It is set up more like a text book. I am defiantly learning a lot! The only lacking I can see would be if you are looking for information on a specific type of fruit. It does not cover any specific plant in depth, it looks at the bigger picture. The Content Page could easily tell you if it has what you are looking for.

This book is a very well written guide on the entire a to z of fruit trees, growing, planning, marketing and even care of trees. I have been looking for a book of this nature for some time and finally there is one. This is helpful for the beginner as well as experienced orchard person. I highly recommend this for reading as well as reference. I love it and I think you will too.

A book that takes seriously the business of starting and keeping an orchard organic. With helpful definitions and links to the business/certification end of things to hands on details about layout, selection of fruits, care of the trees and the undercover - all in all a very useful book. Just what I needed. Will be referring to it often in the years ahead.
