About the Author

Frederic M. Wheelock (1902-1987) received the A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. His long and distinguished teaching career included appointments at Haverford College, Harvard University, the College of the City of New York, Brooklyn College, Cazenovia Junior College (where he served as Dean), the Darrow School for Boys (New Lebanon, NY), the University of Toledo (from which he retired as full Professor in 1968), and a visiting professorship at Florida Presbyterian (now Eckert) College. He published a number of articles and reviews in the fields of textual criticism, palaeography, and the study of Latin; in addition to Wheelock's Latin (previously titled Latin: An Introductory Course Based on Ancient Authors), his books include Latin Literature: A Book of Readings and Quintilian as Educator (trans. H. E. Butler; introd. and notes by Prof. Wheelock). Professor Wheelock was a member of the American Classical League, the American Philological Association, and the Classical Association of the Atlantic States.

If I can give this book 6 Stars, I would. It's obviously very well laid out, has a ton of great content, and I love the extra mile of giving historical background and the like. It's much more than I expected from a scholarly Latin text book. It's no wonder that it is so popular. I blew me away that I got this hardback textbook for like only $18. To me that was unbelievable. If you are interested in learning Latin, this is your book.The important terms are in bold, there are footnotes to give extra detail, and there are several appendices towards the end of the book. Do not skip the introduction, as it includes instructions on how to pronounce the vowels, diphthongs, and consonants and also gives interesting background in history on the development of book. I'm an adult learner, so I really appreciate the effort that was taken to explain some of the grammatical concepts, having been out of school for quite a while. There are many examples of key Concepts being presented in Table Fashion which I really like because I'm a visual learner. Don't get me wrong, you will still need to do your due diligence and do things like create index cards for vocabulary words so you can drill yourself. In other words, you are not going to learn Latin by osmosis. It's hard work, but well worth the effort.Well, flipping through the book while doing this review I just realized there's a self tutorial exercise section. I will definitely be using that. There are also supplementary reading and vocabulary lists after the last chapter. In fact, I just realized this book actually goes on for another 200 Pages after the last chapter which is chapter 40. Chapter 40 ends on page 350. Loci start on page 351 and ends on 411. Then there's a self tutorial section; a key to tutorial exercises; appendices; a vocabulary section, both from English to Latin and Latin to English; a section on abbreviations; a very detailed index; and more. If you're concerned about supporting materials, don't worry. I know this is just a review for the book, but there are available to you an associated workbook, reader, audio CDs, website, and more. I've also discovered that there's a fairly large community that uses Wheelock Latin materials and there are mobile apps and other websites regarding Wheelock Latin.I consider myself somewhat of a slow learner regarding language, but I am very pleased with the learning materials and have already started reading and comprehending small sentences after only two weeks. I'm also finding that this is helping me immensely in understanding Spanish which I am also in the process of learning. That is of course because Latin is the parent language for Spanish.I could go on and on about this book and the whole series of materials available, but I have other things I need to get done today. I should say, that I'm rarely this motivated to write a long review, but with this exceptional book I felt it merited an effort consummate with the effort they made in creating the book.

I am a retired physician, and have been spending about 2-3 hours a day for the last 9 months on Latin. I am going into chapter 28 (of 40). Love it.1. I read the chapter in Wheelock.2 I do all the chapter exercises in the back of the book. The answer key is in the book.3. I do all the exercises in the chapter itself. The answer key is downloadable to a device (but cannot, I think, be printed)4. I do all the exercises in the Workbook. key--same as 3.5. I then read and do all the exercises in the appropriate chapter for Scribblers, Sculptors and Scribes. Somewhere along the way I read the story from 38 Latin Stories.I also started the Lingua Latina Familia Romana about 4 months ago, and am on Chapter 22 (of 35) The way my mind works, I would have been very frustrated to just use that--I want to KNOW things thoroughly. But I find LLPI superb as --raw reading material-- as in, reading it for an hour while walking on the treadmill. I read every chapter multiple times, getting something from them each time. The Companion to Lingua Latina is also useful The subtle difference in grammatical emphasis, to me, is enlightening.I have also benefited from having a Cassell dictionary, and punching searches into Wiktionary--the Wiktionary is great for looking up words in such a highly inflected language.In Wheelock's books, the Inscriptions, Poems (Martial is LOL good), Cicero, Virgil, and the Proverba and Dicta, Sententiae Antiquae, are my "candy"--the pay-off for the grunt work. Originally my goal was to eventually read Caesar's Conquest of Gaul in the original. But all the authors I am being exposed to have broadened my scope of interest--and it feels as though the keys to Western Civilization thought have been handed to me.Yes, like others, my volume is now shredded from use--I am ordering another copy right now. I don't think the kindle edition would work for me.(update, February 2019. I am on chapter 38. Still love it. Started LLPSI Pars II--Roma Aeterna, and, to me, the two work together well. Suggest also getting the companions for that series, and watching the chapter talks on the LLPSI web site. Because of the ornate sentence structure, I actually find the learning curve steeper with that set of books--but, again, that supplements Wheelck.)

Contrary to the previous review written by Samantha Toffolo, I recommend the kindle edition. I found the diagrams, albeit small, completely legible. You can always download the sample and see for yourself. besides, diagrams only take up 5% of the book, while the maps and paintings are superfluous anyways, they don't help you learn Latin.Why I highly recommend the kindle edition is that you can set bookmarks. At the end of each chapter you are told to go to the back of the book to do exercises. In the paperback, this is like going from pg50 to pg600 for exercises then pg650 for the answers. Have you ever had to flip to the end of a colossal book for footnotes or glossary? It's a pain. Not only can I set bookmarks on kindle and go to them with a flew clicks, I can preview bookmark pages, i.e., they're superimposed on the page you have open. So if I'm quizzing on pg600, I don't even have to go to pg650, its overlayed on top. I can't stress how convenient this is and how convenient bookmarks in general are for such a large book, not to mention the search feature and the ability to use a latin-english lexicon.Another reviewer didn't like all the additions, particularly the graffiti section and the added exercises. I also disagree because Lefleur knows this book will be used not only by students but by those self-teaching, such as myself. Anything that will make Latin more fun and accessible is great in my opinion. The book is big though, but as another reviewer states, there isn't enough reading material and I agree. However, if you added reading material this book would be even larger, which is unrealistic. Unless of course, you have a kindle.

Old Man wrote a pretty good damn book. well worth the read, and might make a great textbook if the schools started teaching real life, and personal responsibility to todays youth. want to get a glimpse behind the sensational crap coming out of hollywood, and whats behind the Brotherhood that drives so many to dress up on weekends and play "outlaw biker" Check this book out. I remember this man lived his life to the fullest, with a target on his back, along with the most respected, feared, and envied, Deaths Head. Support you're local 1%'rs

When I was a kid, living in the midwest in the late 60s, our parents were terrified of Sonny Barger and his Hells Angels (despite what many writers believe, there is NO apostrophe in "Hells") and we, for the most part, were too. Sure, we admired the media's depiction of these then-modern day cowboys, but our uneasiness about them was often masked because we were insulated these dangerous looking men and their loud motorcycles by a quite comfortable two thousand miles. It took (and is still taking) a long time for the public to truly understand what inspired these "groups of motorcycle enthusiasts," the brotherhood and trust that is so often missing from men's lives in this period of history. This situation is both helped and hindered by a media still fascinated by the MC world, shows like "Sons of Anarchy," in which Mr. Barger plays a semi-recurring role as one of the "First 9," or founders of the fictional club, and the Discovery Channel show "Gangland" do little to provide an answer to the question "Are MC members criminals?"The only answer I can see to this is to ask another question. "Are HUMANS criminals?"Both questions can be answered in the same way. Sonny Barger is a convicted felon. According to Henry Silverglate's book "Three Felonies a Day," virtually every professional in this country is an UNCHARGED and UNCONVICTED felon. I personally know a man who was sent to a Federal minimum security prison for 18 months for conducting his business with the government in a way that saved taxpayers a consideral amount of money and made him nothing, so to call someone a "felon" means very little to me."Freedom" is not a work of protest, nor is it in any way revolutionary. It elucidates what most of us believe about the concept central to American life, but don't often really think about. Because the word appears in the documents that were written during the design of our nation, we all assume Freedom is inviolate and never-changing, but in reality, it is neither. Freedom means what we allow it to mean, and it is vitally important for all Americans to constantly remind themselves what does and most importantly, what does NOT constitute living in a free society.THAT'S what Mr. Barger's book "Freedom" does so well, it lays out exactly what the concept of freedom means to him. When you look past the long hair and beard (neither of which Sonny currently sports), the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the Hells Angels patch on the back of his leather "cut" or vest (which for Sonny isn't usually leather anymore, it's a heavy denim and the bike a beautiful and expensive - still American made, though - Victory) I think you'll find you agree far more than not, with the founder of the most famous (and notorious) motorcycle club in the world.The trouble the U.S. is in these days is because our leaders aren't more like Sonny Barger. If he weren't a convicted felon and ran for office, I would get on my Harley-Davidson FXDF and ride door-to-door to help elect him. Fortunately, Sonny Barger is FAR too honest a man to try for elected office. But wouldn't it be nice if we could get a few of our elected officials to read "Freedom" and realize what it means to the people they are elected to serve?

The words on these pages are spoken with the sincerity and honesty of someone who has truly LIVED life... Mr Barger is unapologetic in his chosen path and is proud of the successes AS WELL AS the mistakes that have made him the uncompromising man his is today. Our nation's youth would do well to read these words and take some of the golden nuggets imparted on these pages and enact them upon their own lives...

This is a book that is full of truth and honesty, if you want to be free of the crap we are fed everyday through tv, social media ect and are ready to be completely honest with yourself, this is the perfect guidebook to set your way to a freer life.It is not just for motorcyclists, it has value for everyone because it is about how to live in freedom from someone who knows the true value of freedom, friendship and family.

As I was reading Freedom by Sonny Barger, I felt a connection through his book. Sonny tells his belief on freedom and also how his freedom has been crossed and also taken. he tells about he feeling of freedom and stories about when he feel his freedom taken. He tells about his time in prison and how it changed his life for good. He explains that if it wasn't for prison then he would have ended up on a worst road. He also tells about all the things he learn in there from books and other things. The time he feels the most freedom is on his bike. The feeling he feels is the some feeling i feel. With his brothers and the road is he favorite time.I agree because i love riding myself and in a pack of Hells Angels doing 90 mph and almost tire to tire. Its a feeling that not many people would experience. Sonny tells it through stories and feelings. I would recommend this book to anyone because its full of life lessons and its fulled with detail.

This is a good book, reading one chapter a day makes it interesting and lasts longer. Sonny Barger is an well spoken, intelligent, street wise, American outlaw and I would vote for him if he ran for President.

It's amazing Barger has lived as long as he has, given the life he chose. That fact urges people to sit up and take notice when he discusses his philosophy on a number of topics. You might not agree with them all, but they deserve more than usual attention because he didn't develop them by sitting around in his underwear pecking away at a computer terminal or in some non-life classroom. He LIVED them; earned them. I highly recommend reading his other (Life and Times of Sonny Barger) book first as this one will make a lot more sense if you do.

Reading this book was quite eye opening to me. I have always had a great deal of respect for Sonny Barger but I was surprised to see that his writing could be relevant and useful to anybody willing to put aside preconceived notions of the man and any negative opinions they may have based on rumor, speculation and truth. As a felon myself I've felt that my success would be limited by past mistakes. This book has opened my eyes to the fact that I was the one putting limits on myself. I would like to thank Mr. Barger for opening my eyes to some uncomfortable truths about myself and challenging me to push myself to be who I want. Challenge accepted, Sonny. Thanks for hitting me where it hurts with your truth. Your book has changed my life for the better starting right now. I owe you one!

My special interest in reading the book was the question of which methods are currently used to enable computer-generated music. Specifically I'm interested in how a computer program may be made able to 'learn' to play and and to compose music.A GREAT WEALTH OF MATERIALThe book 'Algorithmic Composition' provides undoubtedly a very broad introduction to the topic. The concepts of algorithm, markov model, generative grammar, transition networks, chaotic systems, Lindenmayer systems, genetic algorithms, cellular automata, artificial neural networks, and artificial intelligence are discussed conceptually, and examples are given for each chapter. At the end of each chapter you will find final assessment, where the strengths and weaknesses of the discussed algorithms for the purposes of the composition are pointed out.ALGORITHMS AND COMPOSITIONPerhaps it is no coincidence that the book does not begin with a detailed representation of the compositional process, but with a very extensive chapter (almost 60 pages) about the development of the human sign systems, the concept of algorithm, the development of machines for computation (computers), and the foundational issues of computability and decidability by a computer. What is missing is a similar introductory chapter about to the composition process. While the introduction about the concept of an algorithm provides a good framework for all the subsequent chapters, the concept of 'composition' remains a little 'in the air'. Even in the final discussion this gap is not really closed. Possibly does this lack express the limits of a representation of such a complex topic as 'algorithmic composition' , otherwise this can be seen as a challenge for a possible future revised edition, in which the concept of a - certainly idealized - compositional process will be elaborated to an extend which allows a better interaction with the different algorithmic methods.Within each chapter, as in the concluding discussion, the book repeatedly makes clear that between the great diversity and complexity of challenging pieces of music and the possibilities of algorithmic formalization has always been gaps, which will not be closed easily by a formalization. This is due not only to the limits of formalization - which has not yet been fully exploited - but also due to the conceptualization of the phenomenon of composition as such. We are always able to play or to compose music, but not so readily we are able to talk the same time about our doings in an 'appropriate conceptual' way (even 'great' composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven would not have been able to describe their process of composition in each case in a sufficient theoretical manner).ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?While the preceding chapters are quite clear about the different algorithmic methods, the chapter on 'Artificial Intelligence' is unsatisfying. Nierhaus himself points out at the beginning of the chapter that the very notion of 'intelligent' or 'intelligence' is used very inconsistently in the literature. This short chapter about AI is no remedy from this fuzziness of the field (one should notice that the algorithmic concepts of all preceding chapters are today in use within the context of so-called 'intelligent' systems or in the context of 'machine learning', the preceding chapters therefore deal already 'somehow' with 'artificial intelligence').EVALUATIONDespite the criticisms in detail, I would like to award the book five stars because it deals with a complex issue in a way that gives a good inroad for everybody who wants to understand the field a bit better. In particular I appreciate the thoroughness of the individual chapters combined with helpful further readings.

I cannot praise this book highly enough. It is open and clear, and really makes a significant crack into the world of algorithmic composition. In addition, each chapter is extensively and conscientiously followed by a list of source publications that promise endless hours of enlightening research. It is a significant and elegant contribution to the field of computer music.

I was going to buy this but luckily I found a copy in my uni library. This book has many errors and it only covers style imitation, not musical composition. I was amazed that the author even admits this in the book, and goes on to erroneously say that real algorithmic composition is not the subject of the book. I have just been looking around, and I found this review very helpful:The basics of the key tools of algorithmic composition are adequately covered in this book, and as such it does a mostly competent job of presenting them fairly clearly, but only in the realm of style imitation and despite many detailed errors. One of the things I found while reading the book was that I wished for an included disc, or even a Web site, with the musical examples available for playback so that I could quickly listen to them. I hope that the publisher and author consider this, as it would improve the book as a teaching resource. I also found the numerous errors misspellings, and typographical errors to be distracting, and potentially worrying.I approached this book with a large degree of enthusiasm and optimism, unfortunately I left it feeling disappointed.The emphasis on style imitation in the book and the lack of discussion of "genuine composition" is, I feel, a great shortcoming. There was an important opportunity here togo beyond style imitation--to me, as a composer, it is the least interesting or useful aspect of algorithmic composition--and delve into the more difficult realm of creative composition of compelling musical works. Furthermore, the book does not delve into algorithmic sound synthesis(surely still micro-composition), or examine in detail how some composers have used algorithmic principles to create great works, let alone attack the core issue itself. While the systems outlined in the book may be applied in a range of ways from the superficial and trivial to the very sophisticated, nowhere is the problem addressed of what musical composition really is. This has been a problem with some other books on algorithmic style imitation, but to my mind, musical composition is something other than the application of a set of rules (particularly music theory rules), and it goes beyond this. Style imitation already has a large body of literature; I feel this book does a competent job of pulling much of it together, but it has missed an opportunity to go further and add to the literature on algorithmic approaches to genuine composition.Maybe if I'm doing musicological research on specific styles, this book would be useful, but not for a composition student or working composer.

I have every cookbook written by John Ash, and this matches them for great information. I find his recipes thoughtfully conceived , practical and generally delicious.

I clearly enjoy this cookbook. It is well written and the recipes are easy to follow. I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys cooking poultry

It is a very good cook book with lots of different ways to fix chicken and accompany dishes.

This is the 3rd John Ash's cookbook that I have purchased. I really love the first two. This one is pretty good but not as good as the other two. Several of the recipes are redundant to ones I already have (not only in his other cookbooks, but in others I have). I also do not know why there is a section on eggs.

Yes- the book arrived much sooner than I had expected and in good shape. I work with John Ash and will look forward to doing lots of his terrific recipes.Thanks!

Like, I SO do NOT need anymore cookbooks: I have a huge library including some noteworthy ones dedicated to chicken or poultry. But, this caught my eye at my Costco, and there was just SO much good, great, material in it, I took it home "just to look at it"...and kept it! The book is beautifully produced, with a generous amount of excellent photography....not of ALL recipes, but many. The author/s really know their material and really know how to assemble a usable cookbook.There are a wide array of truly interesting recipes:classics and international, with nice inclusion of Asian, italian, Greek, French, and other recipes, well done. Chef John Ash is able to somehow retain authenticity while making the recipes accessible and, easy...at least in my opinion. Some recipes have ingredients some folks may find hard to get, depending on where they live and such (not a problem here in N. Cali, but I see this issue come up alot in reviews), but there is such variety that folks should find plenty to work with: it may help if your local grocery stocks good basic asian condiments like fish sauce and such. The recipes cover chicken, turkey, and also some for quail, and other game birds; the majority are chicken.Although I have many of the recipes in other books, I find the versions in this book are fresh, new, insightful, and creative . The "Chicken Avgolemono with root vegetables" is a great version of the classic Greek egg/lemon soup. The Asian rotisserie chicken salad is super easy and delish; love the lemongrass chicken recipe, and also many of the salads are just awesome. There is also posole bianco... (Mexican hominy soup usually made with pork, appears here in a wonderful chicken version)... easy to do if you can get a can of hominy! Also, very cool chicken with red wine and orchiette/little ears pasta (you can use other shapes)....totally excellent. The pesto-stuffed turkey breast offers up a fantastic pistachio pesto recipe, but he notes that regular pesto can work fine. Turkey tetrazinni, turkey piccatta, turkey picadillo tacos, Italian Wedding Soup: all these and MUCH more made this cookbook a must have for my household. (Note: we do not eat beef or pork, so relish great recipes for birds/game). Chef John Ash also offers up alot of useful tips as "sidebars" throughout, like a GREAT. Info section on egg knowledge, how to make your own creme fraiche, and so much more.I highly recommend this book....fun, interesting, accessible, awesome recipes. Well done!
